Lisa De Zanetti, Dominique Van Der Straeten
In the post-Green Revolution era, disparities in dietary access, rising obesity rates, demographic shifts, adoption of plant-based diets, and the impact of climate change collectively contribute to a progressive decline in dietary nutritional value, exacerbating B vitamin deficiencies across both low- and high-income countries. While the prevailing focus of biofortification has been on three micronutrients - provitamin A, iron, and zinc - utilizing conventional breeding, it is imperative to diversify biofortification strategies to combat micronutrient malnutrition...

Concentrations of particulate matter (PM10 , PM2.5 ), ultrafine (UFP), particle number (PNC), black carbon (BC), nitrogen dioxide (NO2 ) and nitrogen oxides (NOX ) were measured in train carriages on diesel and bi-mode trains on inter-city and long-distance journeys in the United Kingdom (UK) using a high-quality mobile measurement system. Air quality on 15 different routes was measured using highly-time resolved data on a total of 119 journeys during three campaigns in winter 2020 and summer 2021; this included 13 different train classes...

There is a high unmet need for early detection approaches for diffuse gastric cancer (DGC). We examined whether the stool proteome of mouse models of GC or individuals with hereditary diffuse GC (HDGC) have utility as biomarkers for early detection. Proteomic mass spectrometry of stool from a genetically engineered mouse model driven by oncogenic KrasG12D and loss of p53 and Cdh1 in gastric parietal cells (known as TCON mice) identified differentially abundant proteins compared to littermate controls. Immunoblot assays validated a panel of proteins including actinin alpha 4 (ACTN4), N-acylsphingosine amidohydrolase 2 (ASAH2), dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4), and valosin-containing protein (VCP) as enriched in TCON stool compared to littermate control stool...

Germanium-based monochalcogenides (i.e., GeS and GeSe) with desirable properties are promising candidates for the development of next-generation optoelectronic devices. However, they are still stuck with challenges, such as relatively fixed electronic band structure, unconfigurable optoelectronic characteristics, and difficulty in achieving free-standing growth. Herein, we demonstrate that two-dimensional (2D) free-standing GeS1-x Sex (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) nanoplates can be grown by low-pressure rapid physical vapor deposition, fulfilling a continuously composition-tunable optical bandgap and electronic band structure...

The last 40 years have shown dramatic improvement in outcomes for neonatal cardiac surgery for a spectrum of congenital heart disease diagnoses. With more patients surviving into adulthood, the long-term impact of initial management strategies of these patients has come into focus. This is particularly true for patients with pediatric heart valve disease. Many patients born with right ventricular to pulmonary artery (RVPA) discontinuity require placement of a valved conduit in the neonatal period. Valved conduit options are limited in this patient population due to patient size and inability to respond to somatic growth...

High-entropy semiconductors are now an important class of materials widely investigated for thermoelectric applications. Understanding the impact of chemical and structural heterogeneity on transport properties in these compositionally complex systems is essential for thermoelectric design. In this work, we uncover the polar domain structures in the high-entropy PbGeSnSe1.5 Te1.5 system and assess their impact on thermoelectric properties. We found that polar domains induced by crystal symmetry breaking give rise to well-structured alternating strain fields...

High-entropy alloy nanoparticles (HEAs) show great potential in emerging electrocatalysis due to their combination and optimization of multiple elements. However, synthesized HEAs often exhibit a weak interface with the conductive substrate, hindering their applications in long-term catalysis and energy conversion. Herein, we report a highly active and durable electrocatalyst composed of quinary HEAs (PtNiCoFeCu) encapsulated inside the activated carbonized wood (ACW). The self-encapsulation of HEAs is achieved during Joule heating synthesis (2060 K, 2 s) where HEAs naturally nucleate at the defect sites; In the meantime, HEAs catalyze the deposition of mobile carbon atoms to form a protective few-layer carbon shell during the rapid quenching process, thus remarkably strengthening the interface stability between HEAs and ACW...

The need to develop green and cost-effective industrial catalytic processes has led to growing interest in preparing more robust, efficient, and selective heterogeneous catalysts at a large scale. In this regard, microwave-assisted synthesis is a fast method for fabricating heterogeneous catalysts (including metal oxides, zeolites, metal-organic frameworks, and supported metal nanoparticles) with enhanced catalytic properties, enabling synthesis scale-up. Herein, the synthesis of nanosized UiO-66-NH2 was optimized via a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method to obtain defective matrices essential for the stabilization of metal nanoparticles, promoting catalytically active sites for hydrogenation reactions (760 kg·m-3 ·day-1 space time yield, STY)...

Circular reinforced concrete wound glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) columns and reinforced concrete filled GFRP columns are extensively utilized in civil engineering practice. Various factors influence the performance of these two types of GFRP columns, thereby impacting the whole project. Therefore, it is highly significant to establish the prediction models for ultimate displacement and ultimate bearing capacity to optimize the design of the two types of GFRP columns. In this study, based on the experiments conducted under different conditions on the two kinds of GFRP columns, automatic machine learning along with four other commonly used machine learning methods were employed for modeling to analyze how the column parameters (cross section shape, concrete strength, height of GFRP column, wound GFRP wall thickness, inner diameter of wound GFRP column) affect their performance...
