Corneal abrasions are among the most common ophthalmic injuries in the emergency department (ED) and primarily present as severe ocular pain. Topical anesthetics provide temporary analgesia, but overuse is associated with complications including further corneal injury, infection, and vision loss. This case series describes three patients who used a 15-mL bottle of 0.05% proparacaine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution after discharge from the ED and returned within three days with corneal injury and pain. Although the use of topical anesthetics is traditionally discouraged by ophthalmologists, publications in the emergency medicine literature support their use...

OBJECTIVES: To determine the compliance of online vendors to the UK Opticians Act 1989 Section 27 requirements and safety regulations for cosmetic contact lens (CCL) sales and the quality of online CCL health information. METHODS: The top 50 websites selling CCLs on each three search engines, namely Google, Yahoo, and Bing, were selected. Duplicates were removed, and the remaining websites were systematically analyzed in February 2023. UK legal authorization for CCL sales was assessed using the Opticians Act Section 27 and safety regulations determined by the presence of Conformité Européene (CE) marking...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the accuracy of the Reinstein formula with hand-held ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) measurements for sizing of the Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL). METHODS: A total of 107 myopic eyes of 57 patients implanted with the ICL were included in the study. The size of the ICL was selected based on the manufacturer's recommendations. Agreement between the vault predicted by the Reinstein formula and the vault measured postoperatively was analyzed with Bland-Altman plots...

METHODS: The methodology focused on enhancing predictive capabilities through the fusion of machine-learning algorithms. Specifically, AdaBoost, Random Forest, Decision Tree, Support Vector Regression, LightGBM, and XGBoost were integrated into a majority-vote model. The performance of each model was evaluated using appropriate metrics such as accuracy, precision, F1-score, and area under the curve (AUC)...

BACKGROUND: To investigate the change in the distance between corneal apex and pupil center after small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) or implantable collamer lens (ICL) implantation and its correlation with surgical-induced astigmatism (SIA). METHODS: This study included patients who had undergone SMILE (n = 112) or ICL implantation (n = 110) to correct myopia and myopic astigmatism. The angle kappa was measured using a Scheimpflug imaging device (Pentacam) and represented as Cartesian values between the pupil center and the corneal vertex (X, Y) and chord u ([Formula: see text]orientation), and was compared pre- and post-operative...

Implantable collamer lens implantation (ICL) represents a safe and effective treatment for myopia and myopic astigmatism. To compare the outcomes of a bilateral one-stage same day approach to a two-stage approach, the databases of the University Eye Hospital Munich, Ludwig Maximilians-University and Smile Eyes Linz, Austria were screened for eyes that had undergone ICL implantation. Two-stage surgery was performed at an interval of 1 day (17 patients), 2 days (19 patients) and 1 week (2 patients)...

Hereditary renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is caused by germline mutations in a subset of genes, including VHL, MET, FLCN, and FH. However, many familial RCC cases do not harbor mutations in the known predisposition genes. Using Whole Exome Sequencing, we identified two germline missense variants in the DCLRE1B/Apollo gene (ApolloN246I and ApolloY273H ) in two unrelated families with several RCC cases. Apollo encodes an exonuclease involved in DNA Damage Response and Repair (DDRR) and telomere integrity. We characterized these two functions in the human renal epithelial cell line HKC8...

Human learning is sensitive to rule-like structure and the curriculum of examples used for training. In tasks governed by succinct rules, learning is more robust when related examples are blocked across trials, but in the absence of such rules, interleaving is more effective. To date, no neural model has simultaneously captured these seemingly contradictory effects. Here we show that this same tradeoff spontaneously emerges with "in-context learning" (ICL) both in neural networks trained with metalearning and in large language models (LLMs)...

OBJECTIVE: We have previously shown that neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are present on the ocular surface of patients with ocular graft versus host disease (oGVHD), contributing to inflammation and surface disease. Therefore, we performed a clinical trial using deoxyribonuclease I (DNAase) eye drops to test the hypothesis that reducing the abundance of NETs from the ocular surface will reduce signs and symptoms of oGVHD. METHODS: A prospective, phase I or II, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-masked clinical trial was performed to determine the safety and preliminary efficacy of DNAase (0...

Many precision applications in the mid-infrared spectral range have strong constraints based on quantum effects that are expressed in particular noise characteristics. They limit, e.g., sensitivity and resolution of mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopic systems as well as the bit-error rate in optical free-space communication. Interband cascade lasers (ICLs) are a class of mid-infrared lasers exploiting interband transitions in type-II band alignment geometry. They are currently gaining significant importance for mid-infrared applications from < 3 to > 6 μm wavelength, enabled by novel types of high-performance ICLs such as ring-cavity devices...

The successive I- /I0 /I+ redox couples in the four-electron zinc-iodine aqueous battery (4eZIB) is plagued by the instability of the electrophilic I+ species, which could either be hydrolyzed or be neutralized by the I3 - redox intermediates. We present an adsorption-catalysis approach that effectively suppresses the hydrolysis of ICl species and also provides an enhanced reaction kinetics to surpass the formation of triiodide ions. We elucidate that the improved stability is attributed to the pronounced orbital hybridization between the d orbitals of Fe-N4 moieties (atomic Fe supported on nitrogen doped carbon) and the p orbitals of iodine species (I2 and ICl)...

BACKGROUND: An insufficient number of intratumoral CD8+ T lymphocytes is a major barrier to antitumor immunity and immunotherapy. High endothelial venules (HEVs) are the major sites through which lymphocytes enter tumors; however, the molecular mechanism through which HEVs mediate CD8+ T lymphocyte infiltration remains poorly understood. METHODS: Forty-two patients with stage IIIA lung adenocarcinoma, who underwent surgery, were recruited. Multiplex immunohistochemical staining was conducted on tumor tissues to detect the immune checkpoint ligands (ICLs) expressed in the HEVs, blood vessels, and lymphatics...

With the widespread application of Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) implantation surgery in the field of myopia correction, a comprehensive understanding of its potential complications, especially those related to intraocular pressure (IOP), becomes crucial. This article systematically reviews various complications that may lead to IOP elevation after ICL surgery.
