We present a distributed optical fiber sensor based on a hybrid Brillouin optical frequency/correlation-domain analysis (BOFDA/BOCDA) configuration for both static and dynamic strain measurements. Distributed static strain (or temperature) measurements are realized using the conventional BOFDA method, i.e., acquiring the baseband transfer function of the fiber through a vector network analyzer (VNA). With little modifications, the same setup can perform dynamic, position-selective measurements synthesizing a correlation peak through a frequency modulation of the laser source while operating the VNA at a single modulation frequency...

The development of highly efficient catalysts for formaldehyde (HCHO) oxidation is of significant interest for the improvement of indoor air quality. Up to 400 works relating to the catalytic oxidation of HCHO have been published to date; however, their analysis for collective inference through conventional literature search is still a challenging task. A machine learning (ML) framework was presented to predict catalyst performance from experimental descriptors based on an HCHO oxidation catalysts database...

Our study addresses the critical question of how learners acquire skills without the constant crutch of feedback, utilizing a specialized training approach with intermittent feedback. Despite recognized benefits in skill retention, the underlying mechanisms of intermittent feedback in motor control neuroscience remain elusive. Leveraging a previously published dataset from visuomotor learning experiments with intermittent feedback, we tested a wide range of proxy-process models that posit the presence of an inferred error signal even when an explicit sensory performance is not present...

UNLABELLED: Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant opportunistic fungal pathogen capable of causing serious infections and healthcare-associated outbreaks. Screening for colonization with C. auris has become routine and is recommended in many hospitals and healthcare facilities as an infection control and prevention strategy. Subsequently, and since there are currently no FDA-approved tests for this purpose, clinical microbiology laboratories have become responsible for developing protocols to detect C...

BACKGROUND: A coordinated network of circulating inflammatory molecules centered on the pleotropic pro-atherogenic cytokine interleukin-18 (IL-18) is linked to cerebral small vessel disease. We sought to validate the association of this inflammatory biomarker network with incident stroke risk, cognitive impairment, and imaging metrics in a sample of the Framingham Offspring Cohort. METHODS: Using available baseline measurements of serum levels of IL-18, GDF (growth and differentiation factor)-15, soluble form of receptor for advanced glycation end products, myeloperoxidase, and MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1) from Exam 7 of the Framingham Offspring Cohort (1998-2001), we constructed a population-normalized, equally weighted log-transformed mean Z -score value representing the average level of each serum analyte to create an inflammatory composite score (ICS5)...

Atypical sustained attention is a symptom in a number of neurological and psychological conditions. Investigations into its neural underpinnings are required for improved management and treatment. Rodents are useful in investigating the neurobiology underlying atypical sustained attention and several rodent tasks have been developed for use in touchscreen testing platforms that mimic methodology used in human clinical attention assessment. This systematic review was conducted to assess how translatable these rodent tasks are to equivalent clinical human tasks...

Malaria, a significant global health challenge, is caused by Plasmodium parasites. The Plasmodium liver stage plays a pivotal role in the establishment of the infection. This study focuses on the liver stage development of the model organism Plasmodium berghei, employing fluorescent microscopy imaging and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for analysis. Convolutional neural networks have been recently proposed as a viable option for tasks such as malaria detection, prediction of host-pathogen interactions, or drug discovery...

BACKGROUND: Perineural invasion (PNI) has been used as an important pathological indicator and independent prognostic factor for patients with rectal cancer (RC). Preoperative prediction of PNI status is helpful for individualized treatment of RC. Recently, several radiomics studies have been used to predict the PNI status in RC, demonstrating a good predictive effect, but the results lacked generalizability. The preoperative prediction of PNI status is still challenging and needs further study...

As the discovery of cryptic species has increased in frequency, there has been an interest in whether geometric morphometric data can detect fine-scale patterns of variation that can be used to morphologically diagnose such species. We used a combination of geometric morphometric data and an ensemble of five supervised machine learning methods (MLMs) to investigate whether plastron shape can differentiate two putative cryptic turtle species, Actinemys marmorata and Actinemys pallida. Actinemys has been the focus of considerable research due to its biogeographic distribution and conservation status...

Due to their amorphous structure, metallic glasses exhibit remarkable properties such as high strength, hardness, and elastic strain limit. Conversely, they also exhibit high susceptibility to brittle fracture, making them less qualified for the use as monolithic structural components. Therefore, they may be preferably used as the reinforcing phase in hybrid materials combined with ductile matrix materials. Especially metal matrix composites with interpenetrating structures are suitable. This requires an open-porous structure of the metallic glass...

In the present scenario, peptide is an emerging field of research having vast therapeutic applications. Diverse impurities may rise from various stages of the synthesis process and storage of the peptides. Considering the pharmaceutical importance of the extent of peptides, we were motivated to synthesize a decapeptide and establish a novel gradient reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) method for its analysis along with efficient separation of its six related impurities...
