Particulate matter represents one of the most severe air pollutants globally. Organic aerosol (OA) comprises 30-70 % of submicron particle mass in urban areas. An effective way to mitigate OA particulate pollutants is to reduce the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Here, we studied the effect of titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) photocatalytic seeds on the formation and mitigation of SOA particles from α-pinene or toluene oxidation in chamber. For the first time, we discovered that under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, the presence of TiO2 directly removed internally mixed α-pinene SOA mass by 53...

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) with an ultrathin geometric structure are especially expected to exhibit extraordinary performance in different fields. The phase structure is deemed as a key factor in determining the properties of HEOs, rendering their phase control synthesis tempting. However, the disparity in intrinsic phase structures and physicochemical properties of multiple components makes it challenging to form single-phase HEOs with the target phase. Herein, we proposed a self-lattice framework-guided strategy to realize the synthesis of ultrathin HEOs with desired phase structures, including rock-salt, spinel, perovskite, and fluorite phases...

Sleep paralysis (SP) is a mixed state of consciousness and sleep, combining features of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep with those of wakefulness. The exact cause of SP is unknown, and its prevalence varies among the studies. We aim to identify SP's global prevalence, the affected population's characteristics, and the SP's clinical picture. We searched three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (WoS)) using a unique search strategy to identify eligible studies. All observational studies identifying the prevalence or frequency of sleeping paralysis were included...

The paper analyzes the probability distribution of the occupancy numbers and the entropy of a system at the equilibrium composed by an arbitrary number of non-interacting bosons. The probability distribution is obtained through two approaches: one involves tracing out the environment from a bosonic eigenstate of the combined environment and system of interest (the empirical approach), while the other involves tracing out the environment from the mixed state of the combined environment and system of interest (the Bayesian approach)...

Simulating mixed-state evolution in open quantum systems is crucial for various chemical physics, quantum optics, and computer science applications. These simulations typically follow the Lindblad master equation dynamics. An alternative approach known as quantum state diffusion unraveling is based on the trajectories of pure states generated by random wave functions, which evolve according to a nonlinear Itô-Schrödinger equation (ISE). This study introduces weak first-order and second-order solvers for the ISE based on directly applying the Itô-Taylor expansion with exact derivatives in the interaction picture...

The mixed-state inverse engineering scheme is a control scheme used for engineering the quantum state of a driven open quantum system from an initial steady state to a final steady state. In this paper, we present an analytical study of this scheme applied to the driven two-level model coupled to a heat reservoir. Typically, when the purity of the quantum state varies, incoherent control techniques are required for mixed-state engineering. However, we show that for both Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics, coherent control protocols can transfer the quantum state into the target state...

This work investigates the impact of pressure on the structural, optical properties, and electronic structure of CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) using steady-state photoluminescence, steady-state absorption, and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, reaching a maximum pressure of 3.38 GPa. The experimental results indicate that CsPbBr3 QDs undergo electronic state (ES) transitions from ES-I to ES-II and ES-II to ES-III at 0.38 and 1.08 GPa, respectively. Intriguingly, a mixed state of ES-II and ES-III is observed within the pressure range of 1...

Carbonaceous aerosols play a vital role in global climate patterns due to their potent light absorption capabilities. However, the light absorption enhancement effect (Eabs ) of black carbon (BC) is still subject to great uncertainties due to factors such as the mixing state, coating material, and particle size distribution. In this study, fine particulate matter (PM2.5 ) samples were collected in Chengdu, a megacity in the Sichuan Basin, during the winter of 2020 and 2021. The chemical components of PM2.5 and the light absorption properties of BC were investigated...

In this study, the effects of cohesive SPM (clay) and noncohesive SPM (sand) on the vertical migration of positively buoyant MPs, polyethylene (PE), and negatively buoyant MPs, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), in the estuarine environment under hydrodynamic disturbances were investigated. The settling of positively buoyant MPs was more reliant on the cohesive SPM compared to the settling of negatively buoyant MPs...

We investigate the dynamical quantum phase transition (DQPT) in the multi-band Bloch Hamiltonian of the one-dimensional periodic Kitaev model, focusing on quenches from a Bloch band. By analyzing the dynamical free energy and Pancharatnam geometric phase, we show that the critical times of DQPTs deviate from periodic spacing due to the multi-band effect, contrasting with results from two-band models. We propose a geometric interpretation to explain this non-uniform spacing. Additionally, we clarify the conditions needed for DQPT occurrence in the multi-band Bloch Hamiltonian, highlighting that a DQPT only arises when the quench from the Bloch states collapses the band gap at the critical point...

The self-assembled state of molecules plays a pivotal role in determining how inherent molecular properties transform and give rise to supramolecular functionalities and has long attracted attention. However, understanding the influence of morphologies spanning the nano- to mesoscopic scales of supramolecular assemblies derived from identical intermolecular interactions has been notoriously challenging due to dynamic structural change and monomer exchange of assemblies in solution. In this study, we demonstrate that curved one-dimensional molecular assemblies (supramolecular polymers) of lengths of around 70-200 nm, originating from the same luminescent molecule, exhibit distinct photoluminescent properties when they form closed circular structures (toroids) versus when they possess chain termini in solution (random coils)...

The quantum three-box paradox considers a ball prepared in a superposition of being in any one of three boxes. Bob makes measurements by opening either box 1 or box 2. After performing some unitary operations (shuffling), Alice can infer with certainty that the ball was detected by Bob, regardless of which box he opened, if she detects the ball after opening box 3. The paradox is that the ball would have been found with certainty by Bob in either box if that box had been opened. Resolutions of the paradox include that Bob's measurement cannot be made non-invasively or else that realism cannot be assumed at the quantum level...
