BACKGROUND: Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions worldwide, with a substantial individual and health care burden. Digital apps hold promise as a highly accessible, low-cost method of enhancing self-management in asthma, which is critical to effective asthma control. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a fully remote randomized controlled trial (RCT) to assess the efficacy of juli, a commercially available smartphone self-management platform for asthma. METHODS: We conducted a pragmatic single-blind, RCT of juli for asthma management...

High-Ni layered oxide cathodes are promising candidates for lithium-ion batteries due to their high energy density. However, their cycle stability is compromised by the poor mechanical durability of the particle microstructure. In this study, we investigate the impact of the calcination temperature on microstructural changes, including primary particle growth and pore evolution, using LiNi0.88 Mn0.08 Co0.04 O2 (N884), with an emphasis on the critical calcination temperature for polycrystalline and single-crystal designs in high-Ni cathodes...

The extraction, isolation, structural characterisation and biological activities of polysaccharides from Amorpha fruticosa flowers were investigated. First, the crude polysaccharide AFP was extracted, and two major purified polysaccharide fractions AFP-2 and AFP-3 were isolated. The molecular weight and monosaccharide compositions of AFP-2 and AFP-3 were determined. Then the antioxidant activities of AFP, AFP-2 and AFP-3 were assessed by DPPH radical, β-Carotene bleaching and hydroxyl radical assays. All three tested polysaccharides showed good antioxidant activity while AFP was the strongest one...

Hindered by the high diffusion energy barrier of Li+ in graphite anode layers, the low-temperature application of traditional Li-ion batteries is limited. Lithium metal without intercalation and with excellent specific capacity is expected to support battery operation at low temperatures. However, due to the low conductivity, high freezing point, and strong solvation energy of traditional carbonate electrolytes, the application of lithium-metal batteries at low temperatures remains challenged. In this paper, an all-ester-based ternary solvent electrolyte based on fluorinated carbonate and methyl acetate is developed to improve the cyclic efficiency of the Li-metal anode at subzero temperatures...

The new-generation flexible Zn-ion capacitors (ZICs) require multifunctionality and environmental adaptability for practical applications. This essentially means that hydrogel electrolytes are expected to possess superior mechanical properties, temperature resistance, and tunable interface properties to resist flexibility loss and performance degradation over a wide operating temperatures range. Herein, a multifunctional polyzwitterionic hydrogel electrolyte (PAM/LA/PSBMA) with wide operating temperatures, excellent tensile ability, high water retention, and self-adhesion is designed...

Biological amines and amino acids play essential roles in many biochemical processes. The chemical complexity of biological samples is challenging, and the selective identification and quantification of amines and amino acid stereoisomers would be very useful for amine-focused "amino-omics" studies. Many amines and amino acids are chiral, and their stereoisomers cannot be resolved on achiral media without chiral derivatization. In prior studies, we demonstrated the use of Marfey's reagent─a chiral derivatization reagent for amines and phenolic OH groups─for the LC-MS/MS resolution and quantification of amines and amino acid stereoisomers...

PURPOSE: Post-operative urinary retention (POUR) is a known complication of hernia surgery. Minimally invasive inguinal hernia repair (IHR) is typically done under general anesthesia with neuromuscular blockade (NMB), which is commonly reversed with an anticholinesterase inhibitor paired with an anticholinergic agent. Sugammadex is a unique NMB reversal agent that does not have to be paired with an anticholinergic. We sought to explore the role of sugammadex in reducing the rate of POUR following these procedures...

Recent years have seen a resurgence in randomized, placebo controlled trials (RCTs) utilizing non-classical psychedelics (e.g. 3,4-methyl enedioxy methamphetamine [MDMA]), and classical psychedelics (e.g. psilocybin, lysergic acid diethylamide [LSD], and N,N-dimethyltryptamine [DMT/ayahuasca]) in conjunction with assisted therapy (AT) for psychiatric disorders. A notable methodological challenge in psychedelic AT, however, is the complexity of blinding procedures. The lack of efficacious blinding can introduce considerable response bias, reduce internal validity, and compromise participant retention...

DNA barcoding initiatives have the potential to bridge this gap. Community leaders, students, teachers, and other community members can come together with engaged scientists to solve relevant issues that affect them...

The fundamental logic states of 1 and 0 in Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) are essential for modern high-speed non-volatile solid-state memories. However, the accumulated storage signal in conventional physical components often leads to data distortion after multiple write operations. This necessitates a write-verify operation to ensure proper values within the 0/1 threshold ranges. In this work, a non-gradual switching memory with two distinct stable resistance levels is introduced, enabled by the asymmetric vertical structure of monolayer vacancy-induced oxidized Ti3 C2 Tx MXene for efficient carrier trapping and releasing...

UNLABELLED: Globally, more than 5 billion tons of crop residue (mainly rice straw) are produced yearly, and their management results in pollution, which kills microbes and limits soil nutrient recycling. Therefore, on-farm management that boosts degradation speed will improve the practicability of crop residue retention practices. The present study evaluated the 21 microbial isolates ( Pseudomonas, Bacillus , Aspergillus, Trichoderma, Fusarium, and Rhizopus ) from the soil of different agroclimatic zones obtained from rice fields for in situ straw degradation...

High voltage, high rate, and cycling-stable cathodes are urgently needed for development of commercially viable sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Herein, we report a facial ball-milling to synthesize a carbon-coated Na3 V2 (PO4 )2 F3 composite (C-NVPF). Benefiting from the highly conductive carbon layer, the C-NVPF material exhibits a high reversible capacity (110.6 mA h g-1 at 0.1C), long-term cycle life (54% of capacity retention up to 2000 cycles at 5C), and excellent rate performance (35.1 mA h g-1 at 30C). The present results suggest promising applications of the C-NVPF material as a high-performance cathode for sodium ion batteries...
