Blood transfusion remains an important aspect of patient management in visceral leishmaniasis (VL). However, transfusion triggers considered are poorly understood. This review summarises the transfusion practices adopted in VL efficacy studies using the Infectious Diseases Data Observatory VL clinical trials library. Of the 160 studies (1980-2021) indexed in the IDDO VL library, description of blood transfusion was presented in 16 (10.0%) (n=3459 patients) studies. Transfusion was initiated solely based on haemoglobin (Hb) measurement in nine studies, combining Hb measurement with an additional condition (epistaxis/poor health/clinical instability) in three studies and the criteria was not mentioned in four studies...

INTRODUCTION: The primary aim of the present study was to assess interindividual and intraindividual variations in haemoglobin and ferritin concentrations in Swedish recruits over 5 months of basic combat training (BCT). The secondary aim was to find predictors for missing training (a precursor for attrition) and overuse injuries during BCT. METHODS: In a cohort design, a total of 58 female and 104 male recruits provided complete data. We assessed the ferritin concentrations and haemoglobin concentrations at baseline and after 5 months of BCT and physical work capacity at baseline...

Destruction of erythropoiesis process leads to various diseases, including thrombocytopenia, anaemia, and leukaemia. miR-429-CT10 regulation of kinase-like (CRKL) axis involved in development, progression and metastasis of cancers. However, the exact role of miR-429-CRKL axis in leukaemic cell differentiation are still unknown. The current work aimed to uncover the effect of miR-429-CRKL axis on erythropoiesis. In the present study, CRKL upregulation was negatively correlated with miR-429 downregulation in both chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) patient and CR patient samples...

Nitrous oxide, an inhalational anaesthetic, is popular with adolescents worldwide as an accessible recreational drug which induces a euphoric effect. However, chronic abuse leads to serious complications such as myeloneuropathy and bone marrow suppression by inactivation of vitamin B12 . A 17-year-old girl presented with nitrous oxide-induced myeloneuropathy. She reported chronic nitrous oxide inhalation for 10 months and was admitted to the emergency department on account of repeated falls for 2 weeks...

The present study explores the function of FANCA gene, a pivotal member of the Fanconi anaemia (FA) pathway crucial for preserving genomic stability and preventing cancer, particularly in the context of gastric cancer (GC). Using immunohistochemistry, quantitative real-time PCR, and western blot analysis, we evaluate FANCA mRNA and protein expressions in GC cell lines. The relationship between FANCA expression and clinicopathological characteristics is also explored. Various assays, including CCK8, colony formation, wound healing, and Transwell assays, are used to assess functional changes in cells associated with FANCA...

UNLABELLED: Heyde's syndrome is described as angio-dysplastic gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding in elderly patients with degenerative severe calcific aortic stenosis (AS), resulting in anaemia. It was first reported by Edward C. Heyde in 1958 and thus carried his name. Although this condition is considered to develop in 10-20% of severe AS, it is a less familiar entity in clinical practice. With the rising geriatric population in the communities, there is a proportionate increase in the incidence of AS and accompanying Heyde's syndrome...

PVS is commonly found in women in the fourth and fifth decades of life and is rarely reported in the paediatric population. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 1-year-old male South Asian child who presented with dysphagia and anaemia for 4 months and frequent episodes of vomiting after ingesting semisolid and solid food...

In this study, we assessed the prevalence of anaemia and the associated factors among pregnant women in Rwanda. METHODS: Secondary data from the 2020 Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (RDHS) was used. Multistage stratified sampling was used to select 435 pregnant women included in the study. Phytotherapy is a cost-effective alternative that continues to evolve. This has sparked significant research interest in naturally occurring compounds found in edible plants that possess antibacterial, antioxidant, and anticancer properties. Corchorus tridens L. is a wild edible plant widely recognised for its edible leaves, which are used for vegetable and animal feed. The plant is widely distributed across the African continent and is utilised in numerous countries for treating fever, pain, inflammation, and sexually transmitted diseases...

Adolescents and young adults (AYA) are identified as a high-risk group for HIV acquisition. However, health services are generally not sensitive to the needs of this priority population. In addition, multimorbidity (having more than one disease in an individual) is not well studied among AYA, as it is typically associated with older individuals. This paper reports on commonly co-occurring disease conditions and disease patterns in AYA, aged 15-24 years, who took part in the 2016 South African Demographic and Health Survey...

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors were initially developed for their glucose-lowering effects and have shown a modest glycaemic benefit in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In the past decade, a series of large, robust clinical trials of these therapies have demonstrated striking beneficial effects for various care goals, transforming the chronic disease therapeutic landscape. Cardiovascular safety studies in people with T2DM demonstrated that SGLT2 inhibitors reduce cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure...

BACKGROUND: Capsule endoscopy reading is time consuming, and readers are required to maintain attention so as not to miss significant findings. Deep convolutional neural networks can recognise relevant findings, possibly exceeding human performances and reducing the reading time of capsule endoscopy. Our primary aim was to assess the non-inferiority of artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted reading versus standard reading for potentially small bowel bleeding lesions (high P2, moderate P1; Saurin classification) at per-patient analysis...

Pheochromocytoma is a chromaffin cell-derived adrenal medullary tumour and usually presents with paroxysms of hypertension, palpitations, sweating and headache due to excessive catecholamine release. These tumours can also secrete a variety of bioactive neuropeptides and hormones other than catecholamines, resulting in unusual clinical manifestations. We report a female in her mid-30s who presented with fever, anaemia, thrombocytosis and markedly elevated inflammatory markers. The fever profile, including cultures, was negative...
