Alginate is the most abundant polysaccharide compound in brown algae, which is widely used in various fields. At present, the determination of the content of alginate is mostly carried out using sulfuric acid and trifluoroacetic acid hydrolysis followed by the determination of the content, but the results are not satisfactory, and there are problems such as low hydrolysis degree and low recovery rate. Therefore, in this study, based on the optimization of high performance liquid chromatographic conditions for pre-column derivatization of 1-phenyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone (PMP), the hydrolysis effects of sulfuric acid, trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), oxalic acid, and formic acid were compared and the hydrolysis conditions were optimized...

Iron/chromium hydroxide coprecipitation controls the fate and transport of toxic chromium (Cr) in many natural and engineered systems. Organic coatings on soil and engineered surfaces are ubiquitous; however, mechanistic controls of these organic coatings over Fe/Cr hydroxide coprecipitation are poorly understood. Here, Fe/Cr hydroxide coprecipitation was conducted on model organic coatings of humic acid (HA), sodium alginate (SA), and bovine serum albumin (BSA). The organics bonded with SiO2 through ligand exchange with carboxyl (-COOH), and the adsorbed amounts and p K a values of -COOH controlled surface charges of coatings...

The rheological and morphological characteristics of Ca-crosslinked alginate hydrogels with two different M/G ratios, α-L-guluronate (G)-rich and β-D-mannuronate (M)-rich, each with one alginic acid concentration, were investigated. It was found that the stiffness and elasticity of alginate hydrogels are derived from the thickness and density of the fibril network structures. In aqueous alginate solution, ball-like aggregates of alginates are present. Time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering and time-domain nuclear magnetic resonance measurements suggest that the disaggregation of alginate aggregates and loose fibrillation occur in the early stage of the sol-gel transition...

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) is an effective method for the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. Although many embolic agents have been developed in TACE, there are few ideal embolic agents that combine drug loading, imaging properties and vessel embolization. Here, we developed novel magnetic embolic microspheres that could simultaneously load sunitinib malate (SU), be detected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and block blood vessels. Calcium alginate/poly (acrylic acid) hydrogel microspheres (CA/PAA-MDMs) with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) modified by citric acid were prepared by a drip and photopolymerization method...

Diabetes-related skin ulcers are of significant clinical concern. Although conventional dressings have been developed, their outcomes have not been adequate, indicating the need to investigate functional dressings for the treatment of diabetic ulcers. Copper selenide nanoparticles (Cu2 Se NPs) demonstrate outstanding photoresponsiveness, which is critical to the healing process. However, their limited solubility in water restricts their application. To synthesize the ODT-PMMA@Cu2 Se NP-doped decellularized periosteum‑sodium alginate functional dressing-ODT-PMMA@Cu2 Se/ECM-S (OP@Cu2 Se/ECM-S), Cu2 Se NPs were modified by n-octadecanethiol (ODT) end-functionalized poly (methacrylic acid) (PMAA) ligands homogeneously dispersed in a decellularized periosteum/sodium alginate matrix...

Reducing cadmium (Cd) content from contaminated farmland soils remains a major challenge due to the difficulty in separating commonly used adsorbents from soils. This study synthesized novel millimeter-sized magnetic Fe3 O4 /mercapto-functionalized attapulgite beads (MFBs) through a facile one-step gelation process incorporating alginate. The MFBs inherit the environmental stability of alginate and enhance its mechanical strength by hybridizing Fe3 O4 and clay mineral components. MFBs can be easily separated from flooded soils by magnets...

Edible coatings are used to extend the shelf life of various fruit, including bananas ( Musa from the Musaceae family). After harvest, bananas reach the ripening and subsequent senescence phase. During senescence, the quality of the fruit deteriorates as it takes on a brown color and the tissue becomes soft. To extend the shelf life of such a fruit, effective methods to delay ripening are required. In this study, an alginate-based emulsion, i.e., an oil-in-water emulsion of lemongrass essential oil in alginate, was used to combine the mechanical properties of hydrocolloids with the water barrier properties of the oil phase...
