OBJECTIVE: To estimate cost savings after implementation of customized electronic duplicate order alerts. DESIGN: Alerts were implemented for microbiology tests at the largest public hospital in Victoria, Australia. These alerts were designed to pop up at the point of test ordering to inform the clinician that the test had previously been ordered and to suggest appropriate reordering time frames and indications. RESULTS: In a 6-month audit of urine culture (our most commonly ordered test) after alert implementation, 2,904 duplicate requesters proceeded with the request and 2,549 tests were cancelled, for a 47% reduction in test ordering...

Identifying and appropriately managing urinary tract infections (UTIs) among chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients are essential to reduce further disease complications and economic burden. Hence, this study aims to determine the prevalence of UTIs among CKD patients and study the antibiogram of the bacterial isolates. Four hundred eighty-two clean catch midstream urine samples were collected from CKD patients during the study period. The samples were cultured, and bacteria were isolated using standard microbiological techniques...

Urinary tract infections are among the most common bacterial infections, accounting for about two-fifths of all healthcare-associated infections. Appropriate antimicrobial therapy is crucial, e.g., to avoid prolonged hospitalization and limit antimicrobial resistance spread. This study was performed to analyze the microbiological profiles of urinary tract infections in the Central Teaching Hospital in Lodz, Poland, and develop local empirical therapy guidelines. This study was a 3-year retrospective surveillance of the cumulative antibiograms from urine cultures...

BACKGROUND: The importance of cystitis in pig production is controversial and sparse information is available on its frequency and etiology in sows. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of bacteriuria, macroscopical and histological lesions of the urinary bladder in culled sows. Urinary bladders and urine samples were obtained from 176 culled sows at slaughter. The urine samples collected by cystocentesis were analyzed to determine bacterial content and pathological findings, macroscopic as well as microscopic, of the bladder were recorded for each sow...

Enterococcus faecium, a common resident of the human gastrointestinal tract, is also a major pathogen. Prompt initiation of appropriate treatment is essential to improve patient outcome in disseminated E. faecium infections. However, ampicillin resistance is frequent in this species, rendering treatment difficult. We used a comprehensive approach, including clinical data review, whole-genome sequencing, and mass spectrometry, to characterize ampicillin-susceptible (EFM-S) and ampicillin-resistant (EFM-R) isolates...

Prostate abscess is a rare complication of prostatitis, typically observed in patients with conditions such as immunodeficiency, diabetes, urinary tract abnormalities, and chronic indwelling catheters. Gram-negative bacteria such as Enterobacteriaceae are the most commonly detected organisms in prostate abscesses. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are rarely reported. The unique aspect of our case involves MRSA bacteria, further complicated by an MRSA prostate abscess, in a 61-year-old immunocompetent male...

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are considered as cargo and mediate intercellular communication. As natural biological nanoparticles, EVs can be secreted by almost all kinds of cells and exist in biofluids such as milk, urine, blood, etc. In the past decades, several methods have been utilized to isolate EVs from cell culture medium, biofluids, and tissues. Here in this chapter, we summarized conventional and novel methods and fundamental procedures of EVs extraction and purification from different biofluids (plasma, urine, milk, and saliva) and tissues (brain, intestinal tissue, muscles, and heart)...

METHODS: A prospectively maintained database was reviewed for patients who underwent HoLEP over a five-year period at a single tertiary center. Patient demographics, preoperative, operative, and postoperative characteristics, as well as infection rates, were obtained and analyzed using the appropriate statistical methods...

Background and Objectives : The increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) across countries has seriously impacted the effective management of infectious diseases, with subsequent impact on morbidity, mortality and costs. BACKGROUND: Having a urinary tract infection (UTI) is a serious health issue which is caused by microbial colonization and proliferation in the urinary system. Patients with diabetes and blood pressure are more vulnerable to bacterial urinary tract infections because their host defense is compromised and their urine has a high glucose content. A proper and quick investigation of uropathogen and their antibiogram is key to patient treatment and infection control. OBJECTIVE: Aimed to assess the identification of bacterial uropathogen and antimicrobial resistance patterns among diabetic and hypertension patients attending DUGH, Ethiopia...

Antimicrobial resistance is a major threat to human and animal health. There is an urgent need to ensure that antimicrobials are used appropriately to limit the emergence and impact of resistance. In the human and veterinary healthcare setting, traditional culture and antimicrobial sensitivity testing typically requires 48-72 h to identify appropriate antibiotics for treatment. In the meantime, broad-spectrum antimicrobials are often used, which may be ineffective or impact non-target commensal bacteria...

Background : The prevalence and antimicrobial susceptibility of uropathogens can vary with time and geographical location. Empirical antibiotic treatment is frequently started before the urine culture reports are received; thus, the correct selection of antibiotics is imperative, as inappropriate use could increase resistance rates. This study evaluates the distribution trends and antimicrobial susceptibility of common uropathogens in Taiwan to help predict causative pathogens, prevent overly broad antibiotic use, and guide the optimal prescription of empirical antibiotic therapy to improve prognosis...
