Cardiac macrophages represent a functionally diverse population of cells involved in cardiac homeostasis, repair, and remodeling. With recent advancements in single-cell technologies, it is possible to elucidate specific macrophage subsets based on transcriptional signatures and cell surface protein expression to gain a deep understanding of macrophage diversity in the heart. The use of fate-mapping technologies and parabiosis studies have provided insight into the ontogeny and dynamics of macrophages identifying subsets derived from embryonic and adult definitive hematopoietic progenitors that include tissue-resident and bone marrow monocyte-derived macrophages, respectively...

This study explored the average length of the incisive branch (IB) of the inferior alveolar nerve on cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) with regard to patient demographics in patients with edentulous mandibles. CBCT was used in a retrospective study of edentulous mandibles to assess the presence and anatomical variation for the IB. Three independent observers measured bilateral IB lengths. In addition to demographics, IB length and port of exit data were obtained. A 1-way analysis of variance was used to test whether IB length varied by sex or port of exit, and a standard Pearson correlation was used to test for IB length and age significance, with a significance level of P < ...

This study analyzed the stress distributions on zygomatic and dental implants placed in the zygomatic bone, supporting bones, and superstructures under occlusal loads after maxillary reconstruction with obturator prostheses. A total of 12 scenarios of 3-dimensional finite element models were constructed based on computerized tomography scans of a hemimaxillectomy patient. Two obturator prostheses were analyzed for each model. A total force of 600 N was applied from the palatal to buccal bones at an angle of 45°...

Lung cancer screening (LCS) using annual computed tomography (CT) scanning significantly reduces mortality by detecting cancerous lung nodules at an earlier stage. Deep learning algorithms can improve nodule malignancy risk stratification. However, they have typically been used to analyse single time point CT data when detecting malignant nodules on either baseline or incident CT LCS rounds. Deep learning algorithms have the greatest value in two aspects. These approaches have great potential in assessing nodule change across time-series CT scans where subtle changes may be challenging to identify using the human eye alone...

A 41-year-old female who underwent right-sided styloidectomy via tonsillectomy approach experienced refractory short-lasting severe secondary haemorrhage on the third, seventh and thirteen postoperative days. On examination under general anaesthesia, no major vessel injury was noticed. Contrast-enhanced computerized tomography scan of the neck was done because no obvious bleeder was seen and refractory nature of bleeding. Contrast-enhanced computerized tomography scan neck showed pseudoaneurysm of facial artery which was managed with endovascular embolization successfully...

Considered rare, the synovitis-acne-pustulosis-hyperostosis-osteitis (SAPHO) syndrome is a distinct clinical entity, associating skin manifestations and osteoarticular symptoms. Anterior chest wall pain centered at sternoclavicular and sternocostal joints is an important and characteristic clinical finding that can lead to its diagnosis. Radiologists and clinicians must be aware of synovitis-acne-pustulosis-hyperostosis-osteitis syndrome as it can mimic some of the more common disease entities such as Paget's disease...

The purpose of this case report is to report a case of congenital idiopathic enlargement of extraocular muscles. A four-month-old girl showed limitation of adduction and supraduction in the right eye. A computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan revealed hypertrophy of the lateral rectus muscle and inferior rectus muscle of the right eye. Thyroid hormone and antibody levels were normal. No inflammatory findings on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A traction test under general anesthesia revealed a strong limitation of supraduction and a mild limitation of adduction...

Renal calculi are a common clinical presentation. While ultrasound (US) is a widely used imaging modality for kidney stone diagnosis due to its accessibility and lower cost, its accuracy compared to computerized tomography (CT), the gold standard, remains understudied. This cross-sectional study evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasound for detecting and characterizing kidney stones compared to computed tomography (CT). Fifty-six patients with suspected kidney stones based on flank pain underwent abdominal ultrasound to assess stone presence, size, location, and the severity of any hydronephrosis (kidney swelling)...

The appropriate use of predictive equations in estimating body composition through bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) depends on the device used and the subject's age, geographical ancestry, healthy status, physical activity level and sex. However, the presence of many isolated predictive equations in the literature makes the correct choice challenging, since the user may not distinguish its appropriateness. Therefore, the present systematic review aimed to classify each predictive equation in accordance with the independent parameters used...

We describe a rare instance of enormous, calcified stone development in an enlarged urinary bladder. The patient was a 24-year-old female suffering from the development of vesical calculus as a result of complicated bladder augmentation. She had a small bladder capacity and had undergone augmentation ileocystoplasty in childhood. The abdomen was examined using X-ray and computerized tomography, which revealed a significantly huge urinary bladder stone. An open cystolithotomy was performed and a giant vesicle calculus was extracted along with another small stone...

OBJECTIVES: Bisphosphonates (BFs) show clinical effectiveness in managing osteoporosis and bone metastases but pose risks of bisphosphonate-related jaw osteonecrosis (BRONJ). With no established gold standard for BRONJ treatment, our focus is on symptom severity reduction. Background : Participation in targeted screening reduces lung cancer mortality by 30-60%, but screening is not universally available. Therefore, the study aimed to synthesize the evidence and identify facilitators and barriers to lung cancer screening participation globally. Methods : Two reviewers screened primary studies using qualitative methods published up to February 2023. We used two-phase synthesis consistent with a meta-study methodology to create an interpretation of lung cancer screening decisions grounded in primary studies, carried out a thematic analysis of group themes as specific facilitators and barriers, systematically compared investigations for similarities and differences, and performed meta-synthesis to generate an expanded theory of lung cancer screening participation...

Desmoid tumors (DTs) are non-metastasizing and locally aggressive soft-tissue mesenchymal neoplasms. Those that become enlarged often become locally invasive and cause significant morbidity. DTs have a varied pattern of clinical presentation, with up to 50-60% not growing after diagnosis and 20-30% shrinking or even disappearing after initial progression. Enlarging tumors are considered unstable and progressive. The management of symptomatic and enlarging DTs is challenging, and primarily consists of chemotherapy...

Every year, almost 4 million patients received medical care for knee osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis involves progressive deterioration or degenerative changes in the cartilage, leading to inflammation and pain as the bones and ligaments are affected. To enhance treatment and surgical outcomes, various studies analyzing the biomechanics of the human skeletal system by fabricating simulated bones, particularly those reflecting the characteristics of patients with knee osteoarthritis, are underway. In this study, we fabricated replicated bones that mirror the bone characteristics of patients with knee osteoarthritis and developed a skeletal model that mimics the actual movement of the knee...

Diagnosing intracardiac masses poses a complex, multimodal challenge. We present the case of a 72-year-old woman with a history of rheumatic fever leading to mitral stenosis and a previous mitral valve commissurotomy who reported fatigue, weakness, and palpitations over the past three months. Echocardiography revealed a tumor (53 × 40 mm) in the enlarged left atrium, attached by a wide base to the left atrium wall, exhibiting variable densities. Computerized tomography identified a heterodense mass (53 × 46 × 37 mm) with similar attachments...
