After in vitro fertilization with a single embryo, the parents learned about being pregnant with twins in the 10th week with various indications that an embryonic mix-up could have taken place. The affected couple thus expressed the urgent desire for a clarification of parenthood considering an abortion. However, the prenatal test results would not have been available until the 14/15th week of pregnancy. Legally, then, severe physical or mental distress of the pregnant woman must be claimed by physicians to justify an abortion after the twelfth week...

INTRODUCTION: Control of Campylobacter from farm to fork is challenging due to the frequent emergence of antimicrobial-resistant isolates. Furthermore, poultry production systems are known reservoirs of Campylobacter . The twin-arginine translocation (Tat) pathway is a crucial bacterial secretion system that allows Campylobacter to colonize the host intestinal tract by using formate as the main source of energy. However, Tat pathway is also a major contributing factor for resistance to copper sulfate (CuSO4 )...

PURPOSE: This feasibility study investigated the practicability of collecting and analyzing tear proteins from preterm infants at risk of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). We sought to identify any tear proteins which might be implicated in the pathophysiology of ROP as well as prognostic markers. METHODS: Schirmer's test was used to obtain tear samples from premature babies, scheduled for ROP screening, after parental informed consent. Mass spectrometry was used for proteomic analysis...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) tears are not as frequent as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. They are rare as an isolated injury and more commonly occur in a multi-ligament-injured knee. We reported a case of rupture of PCL in monozygotic twins. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old female presented with giving away of her left knee since 4 months ago. She fell from stairs previously. Physical examination demonstrated positive posterior drawer test...

Workpiece surface defect detection is an indispensable part of intelligent production. The surface information obtained by traditional 2D image detection has some limitations due to the influence of environmental light factors and part complexity. However, the digital twin model has the characteristics of high fidelity and scalability, and the digital twin surface can be obtained by a device with a scanning accuracy of 0.02mm to achieve the representation of the real surface of the workpiece. The surface defect detection system for digital twin models is proposed based on the improved YOLOv5 model in this paper...

OBJECTIVE: The balance between benefits and risks of discordant outcomes makes the Genome-Wide Non-Invasive Prenatal Test (GW-NIPT) controversial. This study aims to evaluate performance and clinical utility in a wide cohort of unselected clinical cases from a single center when a standardized protocol is applied and integrated with a secondary algorithm for data interpretation. METHOD: In 2 years, over 70,000 pregnant patients underwent GW-NIPT for fetal common trisomies, sex chromosome aneuploidies, rare autosomal aneuploidies, segmental abnormalities (CNVs ≥ 7 Mb) and microdeletions (CNVs < 7 Mb)...

BACKGROUND: Maintaining machines effectively continues to be a challenge for industrial organisations, which frequently employ reactive or premeditated methods. Recent research has begun to shift its attention towards the application of Predictive Maintenance (PdM) and Digital Twins (DT) principles in order to improve maintenance processes. PdM technologies have the capacity to significantly improve profitability, safety, and sustainability in various industries. Significantly, precise equipment estimation, enabled by robust supervised learning techniques, is critical to the efficacy of PdM in conjunction with DT development...

AIM: A twin study is a valuable tool for elucidating the acquired factors against lifestyle diseases such as dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, and obesity. We aimed 1. to investigate the factors that affect low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in monozygotic (MZ) twins, and 2. to identify genes which expression levels changed in pairs with large differences in LDL-C or HDL-C levels. The detection of polymorphisms in genes that control livestock reproduction could be highly beneficial for identifying and enhancing economic traits. One of these genes is pentraxin 3 ( PTX3 ), which affects the reproduction of sheep. Therefore, this study investigated whether the variability of the PTX3 gene was related to the litter size of Awassi and Hamdani ewes. A total of 200 ewes (130 Awassi and 70 Hamdani) were used for genomic DNA extraction. Polymerase chain reaction was used to amplify the sequence fragments of exons 1, 2, 3, and 4 from the PTX3 gene (Oar_v4...

Twin-screw granulation (TSG) is an emerging continuous wet granulation technique that has not been widely applied in the industry due to a poor mechanistic understanding of the process. This study focuses on improving this mechanistic understanding by analyzing the effects of the mixing dynamics on the granule quality attributes (PSD, content uniformity, and microstructure). Mixing is an important dynamic process that simultaneously occurs along with the granulation rate mechanisms during the wet granulation process...

Plastic containers, commonly produced from non-biodegradable petroleum-based plastics such as polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), raise significant environmental concerns due to their persistence. The disposal of agricultural waste, specifically rice straw (RS), through burning, further compounds these environmental issues. In response, this study explores the integration of polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable material, with RS using a twin-screw extruder and injection process, resulting in the creation of a biodegradable packaging material...

The contributions of genetic variation and the environment to gene expression may change across the lifespan. However, few studies have investigated the heritability of blood gene expression in older adults. The current study therefore aimed to investigate this question in a community sample of older adults. A total of 246 adults (71 MZ and 52 DZ twins, 69.91% females; mean age-75.79 ± 5.44) were studied. Peripheral blood gene expression was assessed using Illumina microarrays. Background: Most previous studies evaluated outcomes of twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) without considering the coexistence of selective fetal growth restriction (sFGR). Methods: For this purpose, a retrospective cohort study including 98 monochorionic diamniotic twins and three dichorionic triamniotic triplets treated in a single tertiary center was conducted. Results: Overall, 46 twins had selective fetal growth restriction (26 type I, 13 type II, 7 type III)...

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), often referred to as kala-azar, is quite rare in developed countries during pregnancy. Only few studies have evaluated its impact on perinatal outcome. It is caused primarily by Leishmania donovani or Leishmania infantum and presents with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations from cutaneous ulcers to multisystem disease. Differential diagnosis is challenging as symptoms and signs are insidious, mimicking other diseases. Misdiagnosis can result in severe adverse perinatal outcomes, even maternal/neonatal death...

The properties of recycled post-consumer rigid polyethylene packaging waste were studied, using sorted waste washed in the laboratory with water alone and with added detergent, and compared with large-scale high-intensity washed flakes. The washed flakes were compounded using three different temperature profiles in a twin-screw extruder and then injection molded. A higher compounding temperature reduced the thermo-oxidative stability, the average molecular mass, and the viscosity of the samples. Rheological measurements suggested that changes in chain branching occurred at different compounding temperatures...
