SCD is a hereditary disorder caused by genetic mutation in the beta-globin gene, resulting in abnormal hemoglobin, HbS that forms sickle-shaped erythrocytes under hypoxia. Patients with SCD have endocrine disorders and it was described that 7% of these patients have clinical hypothyroidism. Recent studies have shown that mature erythrocytes possess TSH receptors. Thus, we aimed to assess the effects of TSH on SCD erythrocytes. The experiments were conducted using different concentrations of TSH (1, 2, 3, and 5 mIU/L)...

All animal cells control their volume through a complex set of mechanisms, both to counteract osmotic perturbations of the environment and to enable numerous vital biological processes, such as proliferation, apoptosis, and migration. The ability of cells to adjust their volume depends on the activity of ion channels and transporters which, by moving K+ , Na+ , and Cl- ions across the plasma membrane, generate the osmotic gradient that drives water in and out of the cell. In 2010, Patapoutian's group identified a small family of evolutionarily conserved, Ca2+ -permeable mechanosensitive channels, Piezo1 and Piezo2, as essential components of the mechanically activated current that mediates mechanotransduction in vertebrates...

Endovascular thrombectomy is the primary treatment for acute intracranial vessel occlusion and significantly improves recanalization success rate. However, achieving optimal recanalization remains a challenge. The histopathological components of thrombus composition play a crucial role in determining endovascular outcomes. This review aimed to consolidate the recent evidence on the impact of thrombus composition on mechanical properties and endovascular outcomes. The relationship between thrombus composition and mechanical properties was significant, with fibrin and/or platelet-rich thrombi being stiff, tough, elastic, and less deformable; fibrin-rich thrombi were sticky and had higher friction with the vessel wall...

The hemodynamic milieu differs throughout the vascular tree because of varying vascular geometry and blood velocities. Accordingly, the risk of turbulence, which is dictated by the Reynolds and Dean numbers, also varies. Relatively high blood viscosity is needed to prevent turbulence in the left ventricle and aorta, where high-velocity blood changes direction several times. Low blood viscosity is needed in the capillaries, where erythrocytes pass through vessels with a diameter smaller than their own. In addition, higher blood viscosity is necessary when the cardiac output and peak blood velocity increase as a part of a sympathetic response or anemia, which occurs following significant hemorrhage...

PFDMO2OA (C8 HFPO-TA), a novel substitute for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), has been frequently detected in surface waters. However, information on its toxicity remains scarce. In the present study, zebrafish embryos were exposed to varying concentrations of PFDMO2OA, ranging from 80 to 800 mg/L, until 120 h post-fertilization (hpf) to explore its potential developmental toxicities. The LC50 value for mortality was 505.9 mg/L, comparable to that of PFOA (over 500 mg/L), suggesting a lack of safety of PFDMO2OA compared to PFOA...

Enrichment of erythrocytes is a necessary step in the diagnosis of blood diseases. Due to the high deformability and viscosity of erythrocytes, they cannot be regarded as stable point-like solids, so the influence of their deformability on fluid dynamics must be considered. Therefore, by using the special effect of an I-shaped pillar (I-pillar) on erythrocytes, erythrocytes with different deformability can be made to produce different provisional distances in the chip, so as to achieve the separation of the two kinds of erythrocytes...

Plasmodium parasites need to find red blood cells (RBCs) that, on the one hand, expose receptors for the pathogen ligands and, on the other hand, maintain the right geometry to facilitate merozoite attachment and entry into the red blood cell. Both characteristics change with the maturation of erythrocytes. Some Plasmodia prefer younger vs. older erythrocytes. How does the life evolution of the RBC affect the invasion of the parasite? What happens when the RBC ages? In this review, we present what is known up until now...
