The patch with a superlubricated surface shows great potential for the prevention of postoperative adhesion during soft tissue repair. However, the existing patches suffer from the destruction of topography during superlubrication coating and lack of pro-healing capability. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and versatile strategy to develop a Janus nanofibrous patch ( J -NFP) with antiadhesion and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging functions. Specifically, sequential electrospinning is performed with initiators and CeO2 nanoparticles (CeNPs) embedded on the different sides, followed by subsurface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization for grafting zwitterionic polymer brushes, introducing superlubricated skin on the surface of single nanofibers...

Molecular assemblies that transform in response to pH and saccharide concentration are promising nanomaterials in the field of biomedicine, and polymeric micelles of amphiphilic polymers with phenylboronic acids (PBAs) have been studied. Herein, we report the impact of zwitterions on the acidity constant for the collapse and the glucose sensitivity of a polymeric micelle produced from a diblock copolymer comprising polyacrylamides with PBA and zwitterionic carboxybetaine (PAEBB- b -PCBAAm). The diblock copolymer was synthesized through reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization followed by deprotection...

We report a zwitterionic injectable and degradable hydrogel based on hydrazide and aldehyde-functionalized [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide (DMAPS) precursor polymers that can address practical in vivo needs. Zwitterion fusion interactions between the zwitterionic precursor polymers create a secondary physically crosslinked network to enable much more rapid gelation than previously reported with other synthetic polymers, facilitating rapid gelation at much lower polymer concentrations or degrees of functionalization than previously accessible in addition to promoting zero swelling and long-term degradation responses and significantly stiffer mechanics than are typically accessed with previously reported low-viscosity precursor gelation systems...

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is considered a promising strategy for sustainable freshwater production in landlocked and arid regions. Hygroscopic salt-based composite sorbents have attracted widespread attention for their water harvesting performance, but suffer from aggregation and leakage issues due to the salting-out effect. In this study, we synthesized a PML hydrogel composite by incorporating zwitterionic hydrogel (PDMAPS) and MIL-101(Cr) as a host for LiCl. The PML hydrogel was characterized using various techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)...

Shape-shifting polymers usually require not only reversible stimuli-responsive ability, but also strong mechanical properties. A novel shape-shifting photochromic hydrogel system was designed and fabricated by embedding hydrophobic spiropyran (SP) into double polymeric network (DN) through micellar copolymerisation. Here, sodium alginate (Alg) and poly acrylate-co-methyl acrylate-co-spiropyran (P(SA- co -MA- co -SPMA)) were employed as the first network and the second network, respectively, to realise high mechanical strength...

In this study, we propose a unique approach with the design of a single-component Janus zwitterionic hydrogel patch featuring a bionic microstructure. Improving the pharmacokinetics of intra-articularly injected therapeutics is a major challenge in treating joint disease. Small molecules and biologics are often cleared from the joint within hours, which greatly reduces their therapeutic efficacy. Furthermore, they are often injected at high doses, which can lead to local cytotoxicity and systemic side effects. In this study, we present modular polymer-drug conjugates of zwitterionic poly(carboxybetaine acrylamide) (pCBAA) and the anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid dexamethasone (DEX) to create cartilage-targeted carriers with slow-release kinetics...

Water is indispensable both in the lubrication systems of natural organisms and in hydration lubrication systems. There exists a high degree of similarity between these systems, which has driven the development of hydration lubrication from biomimetic to artificial manufacturing. In particular, significant advancements have been made in the understanding of the mechanisms of hydration lubrication over the past 30 years...

Consequently, no interference with the biophysical function of the lung surfactant system could be detected accompanied by negligible protein and cell influx into the bronchoalveolar space after intratracheal administration...

Zwitterionic ring-expansion polymerization (ZREP) is a polymerization method in which a cyclic monomer is converted into a cyclic polymer through a zwitterionic intermediate. In this review, we explored the ZREP of various cyclic polymers and how mass spectrometry assists in identifying the product architectures and understanding their intricate reaction mechanism. For the majority of polymers (from a few thousand to a few million Da) matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry is the most effective mass spectrometry technique to determine the true molecular weight (MW) of the resultant product, but only when the dispersity is low (approximately below 1...
