OBJECTIVE: Neonatal breast hypertrophy is a common phenomenon in term infants, superadded infection can lead to mastitis and that can progress to breast abscess with short and long term detrimental effects. Our effort is to study the prevalence, risk factors, the current microbial profile and sensitivity pattern in these infections in order to suggest an optimal treatment plan for these patients. DESIGN: Case series. SETTING: Hospital based study conducted in Kashmir on the native population...

BACKGROUND: Persistent cervical lymphadenopathy is the typical clinical manifestation of nontuberculous mycobacterial (NTM) infection in otherwise healthy children 1-5 years of age. A positive NTM culture or PCR is necessary to proof the diagnosis. In the case of localized disease, cervical lymphadenectomy simultaneously serves both diagnosis and therapy. A typical complication of surgical treatment, i.e. incision, puncture or excision, is the formation of a fistula, which then requires further surgical intervention...

BACKGROUND: Neonatal sepsis is one of the major causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality, particularly in developing countries. The objective of this study was to determine the causative bacteria and level of their resistance to commonly used antibiotics. METHODS: This descriptive study was carried out at Ayub Teaching Hospital, Abbottabad from April 2009 to January 2010. All neonates of either gender admitted in neonatology unit with clinical sepsis and positive blood culture were included in the study...

AIMS: The objective of this study was to investigate the detection of SEE, SEG, SEH and SEI in strains of Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) using RT-PCR. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, 90 Staph. aureus strains and 90 CNS strains were analysed by PCR for the detection of genes encoding staphylococcal enterotoxins (SE) E, G, H and I. One or more genes were detected in 54 (60%) Staph. aureus isolates and in 29 (32.2%) CNS isolates...

UNLABELLED: Blood-stream catheter related infection is the most severe complication in patients carrying a central venous catheter. Parenteral nutrition (PN) use seems to be a risk factor for developing a catheter-related infection (CRI). MATERIAL & METHODS: In order to know the incidence of CRI in children to further implement policies to reduce nosocomial infection, we review all charts of children (1 month to 17 years) who received parenteral nutrition while in hospital...

Bacterial sepsis is one of the most common causes of mortality and morbidity in neonates. It has been recognized a gradual change in spectrum of organisms responsible for neonatal sepsis. In this study we have evaluated changing trend of incidence and antibiotic susceptibility in neonatal late - onset sepsis (LOS) in 2-periods. This study is based on results of blood culture in neonatal late-onset sepsis, in 2--periods study throughout 12 - years. Neonatal LOS was defined as clinical signs suggestive of infection with a positive blood culture (B/C) after 72 hrs of birth...

The aim of present study is to investigate the molecular characteristic of Staphylococcus aureus isolates isolated from the pus samples from the patients with purulent skin and soft tissue infections in Wenzhou, China. Active skin lesions in pediatric AD patients were cultured with Rodac Staph (Komed, Korea). Retropharyngeal space infections are relatively rare since the widespread use of modern antibiotics. In children, retropharyngeal space infections usually occur following an upper respiratory tract infection, while in adults they are usually caused by trauma, foreign bodies or extension from adjacent spaces. The authors reviewed 12 patients with retropharyngeal space infection between July 1996 and June 2002. Age, sex, duration of symptoms and hospitalization time, clinical presentation, etiology, underlying disease, bacteriology, treatment and complications were analyzed...

INTRODUCTION: Children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) are treated with intensive chemotherapy, which results in profound immunosuppression. Treatment with trimethoprim/sulphamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) is therefore used in some departments as prophylaxis against infections with both bacteria and Pneumocystis carinii. The use of TMP/SMX for prophylaxis during the induction therapy is not uniform in the four departments of paediatric oncology in Denmark. This gave us the opportunity to describe the effect of TMP/SMX on bacterial infections in children with ALL during the induction therapy...

Blood cultures were performed on 891 children (aged 1 month-16 years) who presented at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) with presumed diagnosis of septicaemia, over a three year period (January 1994-December 1996) in order to determine the predominant bacterial agents. One hundred and thirty-nine (15.6%) out of 891 blood cultures were positive. Five of the blood cultures yielded double isolates. Staph. aureus was the commonest bacterial agent isolated and accounted for 36.0%, of all the isolates...

SUMMARY. Continuous therapy with antistaphylococcal antibiotics is advocated by some cystic fibrosis (CF) centers, but it is unclear whether this strategy favors early colonization with P. aeruginosa. We used the data base for the German Centers of the European Registry for Cystic Fibrosis (ERCF) to assess the effect of continuous antistaphyloccocal therapy on the rate of P. aeruginosa acquisition in CF patients. Patients included in this analysis had to be < 18 years of age, P. aeruginosa-negative prior to entry in the ERCF, and to have had at least 2 additional P...

Out of 6319 live born babies, 310 (4.9%) with high risk factors and with clinical suspicion of sepsis were studied for incidence pattern of neonatal infections. Incidence of neonatal infection was 2.56% in normal weight babies and 8.42% in low birth weight babies. Total culture positivity was 48.38%. Klebsiella was the most frequent offender, followed by Staph aureus and Staph epidermidis. Majority of klebsiella species were sensitive to ceftriaxone (86%), amikacin (84%) and ceftazidime (80%). Ceftriaxone was effective against Staph aureus (95%) and Staph epidermidis (95%)...

Functional peritoneal dialysis catheter loss due to persistent or recurrent peritonitis is a common clinical problem in paediatric patients. To examine the effect of positioning of the cuff on infection and loss rate we compared catheters where the cuff was buried in the rectus sheath (deep cuffs) with those where the cuff was sutured to the external oblique muscle, just below the subcutaneous fascia (superficial cuffs). Of 62 catheters inserted into 35 patients (median age 7.76 yrs, range 0-17 yrs) 28 were lost through peritonitis of which 19 (68%) were due to Staph...
