BACKGROUND: Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) is a gynaecological complication of urinary schistosomiasis (US) with an estimated burden of 20-120 million cases in endemic areas. A neglected sexual and reproductive health disease in sub-Saharan Africa, FGS increases susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections including cervical cancer and infertility among other morbidities. However, there appears to be limited FGS knowledge among practicing and pre-service health providers with implications for control...

PURPOSE: This work aimed to explore the relationship between epidermal growth factor (EGF) and β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-HCG) and ectopic pregnancy types and impact on prognosis. METHODS: Twenty women with normal pregnancies (NPs) were recruited as control group, and twenty women each with tubal pregnancy (TP) and cervical pregnancy (CP) were recruited. Blood samples were collected to detect EGF and β-HCG. Data on length of hospital stay and incidence of complications were collected...

BACKGROUND: Enterobius vermicularis (E. vermicularis), also referred to as pinworm, is a widespread human intestinal parasite which predominantly occurs in young children, making their caretakers a population at risk for the transmission of this helminth. It can occasionally affect extraintestinal organs and tissues, including the female genital tract. Infestation can be asymptomatic or manifest as different kinds of gynaecological disorders, such as pelvic inflammation mimicking tumours, abnormal uterine bleeding, or vaginitis...

Chlamydia trachomatis ( Ct ) infections are the most common sexually transmitted infection (STI). Despite effective antibiotics for Ct , undetected infections or delayed treatment can lead to infertility, ectopic pregnancies, and chronic pelvic pain. Besides humans, chlamydia poses similar health challenges in animals such as C. suis ( Cs ) in pigs. Based on the similarities between humans and pigs, as well as their chlamydia species, we use pigs as a large biomedical animal model for chlamydia research. In this study, we used the pig model to develop a vaccine candidate against Ct ...

STUDY DESIGN: In COVID-19's first wave, we expanded medication management of EPL to our EDs. This retrospective study evaluated 72 patients receiving mifepristone and misoprostol for EPL from 4/1/2020-3/31/2021, comparing treatment success, safety outcomes, and follow-up rates by location...

Thyroid ectopy is the presence of thyroid tissue outside its normal cervical location. Clinical manifestations of thyroid ectopy are varied. The latter complications can be life-threatening. Emergency treatment is often surgical or endoscopic. We report a case of a 26-year-old man with tracheal thyroid ectopy, complicated by respiratory distress, in whom conventional treatments were not feasible. The patient was treated with radioiodine-131 administered in liquid form. The final control showed the complete resolution of the intra-tracheal mass...

Uncovering the risk factors of pulmonary hypertension and its mechanisms is crucial for the prevention and treatment of the disease. In the current study, we showed that experimental periodontitis, which was established by ligation of molars followed by orally smearing subgingival plaques from patients with periodontitis, exacerbated hypoxia-induced pulmonary hypertension in mice. Mechanistically, periodontitis dysregulated the pulmonary microbiota by promoting ectopic colonization and enrichment of oral bacteria in the lungs, contributing to pulmonary infiltration of interferon gamma positive (IFNγ+ ) T cells and aggravating the progression of pulmonary hypertension...

Heterotopic pregnancy, defined by the simultaneous existence of intrauterine and ectopic pregnancy, is a rare pathological condition. In women undergoing assisted reproduction techniques, the frequency is higher. The possibility of the simultaneous existence of an ectopic pregnancy, when the certainty of an endometrial pregnancy has been assured, should always be considered with special care. The case of a patient with heterotopic pregnancy with assisted conception and the only symptom being nausea and vomiting is presented...

Cervical ectopic pregnancies account for <1% of ectopic pregnancies. Early diagnosis may reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with treatment. A 43-year-old woman, gravida 4 para 2, presented at 5 + 6 weeks of gestation of pregnancy via in vitro fertilisation with painless vaginal bleeding. Her initial serum β-hCG level was 51,495 mIU/mL. Ultrasound showed a live ectopic pregnancy within the upper cervical canal with no sliding sign. Surgery was avoided initially due to risk of haemorrhage...

High-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are the causative agents of cervical cancer. Here, we report that HPV16 E6E7 promotes cervical cancer cell proliferation by activating the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). We found that HPV16 E6 activates the PPP primarily by increasing glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) enzyme activity. Mechanistically, HPV16 E6 promoted G6PD dimer formation by inhibiting its lactylation. Importantly, we suggest that G6PD K45 was lactylated during G6PD-mediated antioxidant stress...

Cervical ectopic pregnancy is the rarest kind of ectopic pregnancy, and it is known as the implantation of an embryo into the cervical mucosa. It is commonly associated with complications such as hemorrhage from the cervix and can lead to severe consequences if it is not treated early. For this reason, the treatment for a cervical pregnancy often requires an abdominal hysterectomy. To avoid such radical management, several conservative methods of termination have been used. In this paper, we report a complex management of one of our ectopic cervical cases, which includes embolization of the uterine arteries, treatment with methotrexate and mifepristone, evacuation of the pregnancy followed by local hemostatic sutures and application of a balloon in the cervix...

Ranula is a benign cystic lesion caused by the escape and collection of salivary mucus. Classically, it is divided into simple ranulas, a cystic mass in the floor of the mouth, and diving/plunging/cervical ranulas, a submandibular mass without apparent intraoral involvement. Although plunging ranula is a well-documented cause of neck swelling, its association with the presence of ectopic sublingual glands is extremely rare, with less than five cases reported. Other cervical cystic lesions may have the same clinical aspect; therefore, advanced diagnostic techniques like a CT scan or MRI play a critical role in early diagnosis...

Management of more advanced cases is challenging due to higher risks of major intraoperative hemorrhage. Hysterectomy is currently the intervention of choice for advanced cases. Cervical pregnancy is a very rare form of ectopic pregnancy, which can be life-threatening due to the potential risk of massive haemorrhage. The most likely site of cervical implantation is within the endocervical canal. We report here an unusual and another possible site of cervical pregnancy on the surface of the ectocervix (portio). The patient presented with vaginal bleeding after a period of six weeks of amenorrhea and a positive urinary pregnancy test. Clinical examination was suggestive of a cervical mass on the surface of the portio, which was successfully managed by local excision and the application of haemostatic sutures...
