INTRODUCTION: We aimed to investigate the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection and SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in parturient women and their newborns during the first Danish COVID-19 wave and to identify associations with maternal background characteristics, self-reported symptoms, and pregnancy outcomes. METHODS: In a single-centre, prospective cohort study from Denmark, we invited 1,883 women with singleton pregnancies giving live birth from 25 May 2020 to 2 November 2020...

BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are medical conditions that can cause severe complications, such as maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to assess the incidence and characteristics of pre-eclampsia and eclampsia. METHODS: From July 2021 to July 2022, the authors conducted a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of a tertiary care hospital in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo)...

OBJECTIVES: This is the first study that provides an overview of the characteristics of a specialized Intensive Maternal Care Unit (IMU) that caters to obstetric-related conditions in the Philippines. This study aims to describe the different kinds of cases admitted into this facility, the different medical and surgical interventions employed, length of hospital stay, and maternal and fetal outcomes of these patients. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study based on a chart review of medical records and admission charts of patients admitted to the Intensive Maternal Unit of a tertiary hospital in Manila from January 2017 to December 2019...

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the most common medical complication of pregnancy, and it can lead to complications for the mother and the infant/fetus. This was especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the present systematic review aimed to describe the changes in screening, diagnosis, management, and outcomes of gestational diabetes during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The systematic review was conducted from December 2019 until January 1, 2022...

BACKGROUND: Recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) is a common pregnancy complication that brings great pain to pregnant women and their families. Genetic factors are an important cause reason of RPL. However, clinical research on monogenic diseases with recurrent miscarriage is insufficient. CASE PRESENTATION: Here we reported a Chinese family with RPL and genetic analysis of the abortion and parents. A paternally inherited heterozygous missense variant c.1415T > G (p...

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk profiles of patients referred to the maternal health clinic (MHC) with a history of gestational diabetes (GDM). METHODS: Eligible patients had their MHC appointment at 6 months postpartum between November 2011 and May 2022 and experienced GDM in their most recent pregnancy. Included participants were then divided into subgroups comparing methods of glycemic control: diet-controlled GDM and insulin-controlled GDM...

INTRODUCTION: Fetal MRI lung volume nomograms are increasingly used to prognosticate neonatal outcomes in fetuses with suspected pulmonary hypoplasia. However, pregnancies complicated by fetal anomalies associated with pulmonary hypoplasia may also be complicated by fetal growth restriction. If a small lung volume is suspected in such cases, it is often unclear whether the lungs are "small" because of underlying lung pathology, or small fetal size. Existing MRI lung volume nomograms have mostly been stratified by gestational age (GA), rather than estimated fetal weight (EFW)...

Ventricular tachycardia (VT) is a rare but potentially fatal complication in pregnancy. We present a case of a pregnant woman with cardiomyopathy due to frequent premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) and VT originating from the left ventricular outflow tract. After presenting late in the third trimester, the decision was made to deliver the fetus after 4 days of medication titration due to continued sustained episodes of VT. After delivery, the patient continued to have frequent PVCs and VT several months after discharge, and she ultimately underwent a PVC ablation with dramatic reduction in PVC burden and improvement in cardiomyopathy...

Cardiovascular diseases are the prime cause of mortality and morbidity among patients with T1D. Accumulating metabolic disturbances and accelerated cardiac fibrosis fuel the development of heart dysfunction. BACKGROUND: Occurrences of weight stigma have been documented in prenatal clinical settings from the perspective of pregnant patients, however little is known from the viewpoint of healthcare providers themselves. Reported experiences of weight stigma caused by maternal healthcare providers may be due to negative attitudes towards obesity in pregnancy and a lack of obesity specific education. The objective of this study was to assess weight-related attitudes and assumptions towards obesity in pregnancy among maternal healthcare providers in order to inform future interventions to mitigate weight stigma in prenatal clinical settings...

Preterm birth is a serious pregnancy complication that affects neonatal mortality, morbidity and long-term neurological prognosis. Predicting spontaneous preterm delivery (PTD) is important for its management. While excluding the risk of PTD is important, identifying women at high risk of PTD is imperative for medical intervention. Currently used PTD prediction parameters in clinical practice have shown high negative predictive values, but low positive predictive values. We focused on sulfated and sialylated glycocalyx changes in the uterus and vagina prior to the onset of parturition and explored the potential of electrophysiological detection of these changes as a PTD prediction parameter with a high positive predictive value...

OBJECTIVE: The prevalence of syphilis in Zambia remains high and is a critical public health concern. The Zambian Ministry of Health recommends universal screening and same-day treatment for syphilis in pregnancy, yet the syphilis screening rate is low, and treatment is poorly documented. It has become clear that pregnant women have a high risk of developing oral diseases, both in the supporting tissues and in the teeth. This is precisely why the first meeting between the dentist and the mother-to-be should take place as early as possible, either while she is still planning her pregnancy or as soon as she becomes pregnant. During this appointment it is appropriate to examine the presence of any risk factors for the future mother's oral health such as medication intake, presence of chronic pathologies or bad habits (smoking)...
