BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To date, most tobacco product waste research focuses on cigarettes. Less is known about single-use 'disposable' e-cigarette waste, which contains several hazardous and toxic materials. This exploratory study examines self-reported methods for discarding disposables among a national sample of US adolescents and young adults. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND MEASUREMENTS: Data were obtained from a weekly cross-sectional survey of US residents aged 15-24 years...

This study examined the e-cigarette and vaping resistance strategies used by Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (NHPI) youths in rural Hawai'i. Focus groups (N = 17) were conducted in eight geographically dispersed elementary, middle/intermediate, and multilevel schools in low-income communities on Hawai'i Island. Sixty-nine youths (67% NHPI, Mage = 12.5 years) participated in this study. The resistance strategies discussed across the greatest number of groups were "refuse" (saying no), "explain" (providing reasons for vaping refusal), "avoid" (avoiding people or places where e-cigarettes were used), and "leave" (walking away from a situation where e-cigarettes were being used)...

INTRODUCTION: College students are a priority population for substance use prevention, and other studies have reported associations between mental health and e-cigarette use. This study described the association of mental health to e-cigarette and other substance use (ECIG+ use) among US college students. METHODS: We used Fall 2018 and Spring 2019 National College Health Assessment data among undergraduate students aged 18-24 years (n=55654) at 138 institutions...

INTRODUCTION: Erythema multiforme is a hypersensitivity reaction caused by various factors, such as viruses, chemicals, and drugs. Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) or vape is a battery-powered nicotine delivery device that substitutes for traditional cigarettes. The chemical components of vaping, including propylene glycol and nicotine, can cause hypersensitivity reactions. OBJECTIVE: To report a case of oral erythema multiforme in an e-cigarettes user, treatment, and review the literature regarding the impact of these devices on oral health...

INTRODUCTION: Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have emerged as a new paradigm in nicotine delivery systems. Although they are marketed as safer alternatives to tobacco, public perceptions of their safety and utility vary widely. This study aims to understand the percentage of use, factors associated, perceptions, and attitudes about e-cigarettes among Ecuadorian adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among the Ecuadorian population aged 18-65 years through a convenience sample, using a structured online questionnaire designed to collect responses from voluntary participants over three months, from February to April 2023...

BACKGROUND: This is authors' reply to the Commentary on our publication entitled "Adult smokers' Complete Switching Away from Cigarettes at 6, 9, and 12 Months after Initially Purchasing a JUUL e-Cigarette." METHODS AND RESULTS: Analyses addressed questions about follow-up rates and missed responses in the Adult JUUL Switching and Smoking Trajectories (ADJUSST) Study. Results demonstrate limited potential for selection bias, as participants who missed surveys were similar to those with complete data, and re-contact of participants who missed a follow-up indicated almost half were not smoking...

BACKGROUND: Electronic (e-)cigarettes may help adult cigarette smokers achieve cigarette cessation, depending on patterns of e-cigarette use. Among cigarette smokers who do not use e-cigarettes, it is unclear if and how a-priori intentions for use are related to uptake patterns. Longitudinal studies have focused on established e-cigarette users or adolescent and young adult populations exclusively. METHODS: Within a nationwide randomized clinical trial (N = 638), adult cigarette smokers not currently using e-cigarettes were randomized (2:1) to receive (or not) one-month sampling of e-cigarettes...

OBJECTIVE: Reducing harm from combustible cigarette use among women of reproductive age (WRA) is critical given their potential vulnerability to multigenerational adverse impacts of cigarette smoking. Although electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) are not approved smoking cessation aids in the US, many WRA who smoke report using ENDS to help quit smoking. Associations between ENDS use patterns and smoking-cessation efforts among US WRA remain unclear. METHODS: Using the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study, we examined whether baseline (Wave 3 or 4) ENDS use frequency predicted (a) making a cigarette quit attempt (QA) and (b) successful quitting by follow-up (Wave 4 or 5, respectively) among WRA (N = 2834; 72...

BACKGROUND: The rise in e-cigarette use among youth is a significant global public health issue. It is important to identify those at increased risk and implement effective strategies to reduce e-cigarette popularity among the youth. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify predictors of e-cigarette uptake in youths with no prior tobacco use, considering individual, familial and the broader societal environmental factors. METHODS: For this investigation, a group of 2,487 tobacco-free youths was selected from 15 high schools in Shenzhen, China...

INTRODUCTION: In Thailand, school smoke-free policies initially targeted cigarette smoking but now extend to include electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). Yet, the impact of this expansion on curbing e-cigarette use in schools is uncertain. This study seeks to explore how e-cigarette control policies and educational initiatives in Thai secondary schools influence students' legal knowledge, perception of harm, current e-cigarette use, and susceptibility to future use. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey was conducted in four regions of Thailand between May and August 2023, involving 6147 students selected through multistage sampling...

The prevalence of e-cigarette use among young adults in the USA is high (14%). Although the majority of users plan to quit vaping, the motivation to make a quit attempt is low and available support during a quit attempt is limited. Using wearable sensors to collect physiological data (eg, heart rate) holds promise for capturing the right timing to deliver intervention messages. This study aims to fill the current knowledge gap by proposing statistical methods to (1) de-noise beat-to-beat interval (BBI) data from smartwatches worn by 12 young adult regular e-cigarette users for 7 days; and (2) summarize the de-noised data by event and control segments...
