The multi-eigenvalue multiplexing-based discrete spectrum-modulated nonlinear frequency-division multiplexing (DS-NFDM) system with higher-order modulation format has been demonstrated experimentally. After designing the coefficients of the eigenvalue set and the constellation point distribution of 16-amplitude phase shift keying (16-APSK), the realizations of 14-, 30-, and 46-eigenvalue multiplexed DS-NFDM signals have been implemented. The results show that 46-eigenvalue and 30-eigenvalue multiplexed DS-NFDM signals can transmit 50 km and 400 km over a nonzero dispersion-shifted fiber (NZDSF) under soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 2...

Our study addresses the critical question of how learners acquire skills without the constant crutch of feedback, utilizing a specialized training approach with intermittent feedback. Despite recognized benefits in skill retention, the underlying mechanisms of intermittent feedback in motor control neuroscience remain elusive. Leveraging a previously published dataset from visuomotor learning experiments with intermittent feedback, we tested a wide range of proxy-process models that posit the presence of an inferred error signal even when an explicit sensory performance is not present...

Flow in soft materials encompasses a wide range of viscous, plastic and elastic phenomena which provide challenges to modelling at the microscopic level. To create a controlled flow, we perform falling ball viscometry tests on packings of soft, frictionless hydrogel spheres. Systematic creep flow is found when a controlled driving stress is applied to a sinking sphere embedded in a packing. Here, we take the novel approach of applying an additional global confinement stress to the packing using an external load...

We present a modification to self-consistent charge density functional-based tight binding (SCC-DFTB), which allows computation based on approximate atomic charges. We obtain these charges by means of a machine learning (ML) process that combines a Coulomb model with a neural network. This allows us to avoid the SCC cycles in the SCC-DFTB calculation while maintaining its accuracy. The main input of the model is the atomic positions characterized by a set of atom-centered symmetry functions. The charge inference from our ML algorithm is as close as 10-2 units of charge from the exact SCC solution...

This report describes a 48-year-old man who presented with a month history of weakness and paraesthesia associated with severe pain of all four limbs. Initially diagnosed and treated as Guillain Barre syndrome due to the severity of his extremity weakness, it was later discovered to be eosinophilic granulomatous polyangiitis (EGPA). Mononeuritis multiplex should not be underestimated or overlooked in the setting of diagnosing EGPA and requires prompt treatment with biologics to limit the permanent consequences on patient's quality of life with regard to developing limb weakness and pain...

BACKGROUND: Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a prevalent complication following cardiac surgery that is associated with increased adverse events. Several guidelines and expert consensus documents have been published addressing the prevention and management of POAF. We aimed to develop an order set to facilitate widespread implementation and adoption of evidence-based practices for POAF following cardiac surgery. METHODS: Subject matter experts were consulted to translate existing guidelines and literature into a sample turnkey order set (TKO) for POAF...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Due to the high prevalence of dental caries, fixed dental restorations are regularly required to restore compromised teeth or replace missing teeth while retaining function and aesthetic appearance. The fabrication of dental restorations, however, remains challenging due to the complexity of the human masticatory system as well as the unique morphology of each individual dentition. Adaptation and reworking are frequently required during the insertion of fixed dental prostheses (FDPs), which increase cost and treatment time...

INTRODUCTION: The life expectancy of people living with HIV receiving effective combination antiretroviral therapy is approaching that of the general population and non AIDS-defining age-related comorbidities are becoming of greater concern. In order to support healthy aging of this population, we set out to explore the association between multimorbidity (defined as presence of 2 or more non AIDS-defining comorbidities) and quality of life (QoL). METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis using data from the Correlates of Healthy Aging in Geriatric HIV (CHANGE HIV) study, a Canadian cohort of people living with HIV age 65  years and older...

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based mobile health (mHealth) interventions have been successful for an array of physical and mental health conditions. Children with developmental disorders (DD) often have secondary speech and language disorders. The lack of high-quality medical and educational services in low- and middle-income countries limits the opportunities for children with DD to succeed in life. South Africa currently offers limited access to education, social, and health services. METHODS: Twelve caregivers of twelve children with DD between the ages of 3 and 6 years who already received monthly early childhood therapy participated in this study...

Non-invasive continuous blood pressure monitoring is of longstanding interest in various cardiovascular scenarios. In this context, pulse arrival time (PAT), i.e., a surrogate parameter for systolic blood pressure (change), became very popular recently, especially in the context of cuffless blood pressure measurement and dedicated lifestyle interventions. Nevertheless, there is also understandable doubt on its reliability in uncontrolled and mobile settings.
Objective: The aim of this work is therefore the investigation whether PAT follows oscillometric systolic blood pressure readings during moderate interventions by physical or mental activity using a medical grade handheld device for non-invasive PAT assessment...

The complex and diverse practical background drives this paper to explore a new neurodynamic approach (NA) to solve nonsmooth interval-valued optimization problems (IVOPs) constrained by interval partial order and more general sets. On the one hand, to deal with the uncertainty of interval-valued information, the LU-optimality condition of IVOPs is established through a deterministic form. On the other hand, according to the penalty method and adaptive controller, the interval partial order constraint and set constraint are punished by one adaptive parameter, which is a key enabler for the feasibility of states while having a lower solution space dimension and avoiding estimating exact penalty parameters...

The formation of silicate grains in the interstellar medium (ISM), especially those containing chiral surfaces such as clinopyroxenes, is poorly understood. Moreover, silicate interactions with various forms of hydrogen-proton (H+ ), neutral H (HI), and molecular hydrogen (H2 ) are of high importance as hydrogen comprises >90% of the ISM gas budget, and these species play important roles in the formation of new molecules in space. Furthermore, silicate surfaces catalyze the formation of H2 in the interstellar medium formed on dust grain surfaces by H-H association...

Bromeliads play a vital role in preserving biodiversity in the Neotropical region. To understand their impact on arthropod diversity in Brazil's semi-arid region, we studied the rupicolous bromeliad Encholirium spectabile. From 2011 to 2018, we observed the arthropod fauna in E. spectabile clumps, documenting the associated taxa, their abundance, and interactions. We also investigated how seasonality affects arthropod richness and composition during the dry and rainy seasons. Over the observation period, 15 orders and 57 arthropod families were recorded in association with E...

When exposed to low temperatures, plants undergo a drastic reprogramming of their transcriptome in order to adapt to their new environmental conditions, which primes them for potential freezing temperatures. While the involvement of transcription factors in this process, termed cold acclimation, has been deeply investigated, the potential contribution of chromatin regulation remains largely unclear. A large proportion of cold-inducible genes carries the repressive mark histone 3 lysine 27 trimethylation (H3K27me3), which has been hypothesized as maintaining them in a silenced state in the absence of stress, but which would need to be removed or counteracted upon stress perception...
