BACKGROUND: Angiopoietin-like 3 (ANGPTL3) inhibits lipoprotein and endothelial lipases and hepatic uptake of triglyceride-rich lipoprotein remnants. ANGPTL3 loss-of-function carriers have lower levels of triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, and non-HDL cholesterol and a lower risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease than noncarriers. Zodasiran is an RNA interference (RNAi) therapy targeting expression of ANGPTL3 in the liver...

To address the limitations of the CRISPR/Cas12f1 system in clinical diagnostics, which require the complex preparation of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) or in vitro transcripts (RNA), we developed a fluorescent biosensor named PDTCTR (PAM-dependent dsDNA Target-activated Cas12f1 Trans Reporter). This innovative biosensor integrates Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RPA) with the Cas12f_ge4.1 system, facilitating the direct detection of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). PDTCTR represents a significant leap forward, exhibiting a detection sensitivity that is a hundredfold greater than the original Cas12f1 system...

American pikas ( Ochotona princeps ) are small lagomorphs that live in mountainous talus areas of western North America. Studies on the histopathology of American pikas are limited. We summarize here the clinical histories, and gross and histologic findings of 12 American pikas, including 9 captive (wild-caught) and 3 wild animals. Death was often attributed to stress (transport, handling, anesthesia) with few-to-no premonitory clinical signs. Infection was the cause of death in 2 cases: 1 had bacterial pyogranulomatous dermatitis, cellulitis, and lymphadenitis with sepsis; the other case had oomycete-induced necrotizing colitis...

BACKGROUND & AIMS: To examine the association of the history of preoperative antiviral therapy (AVT) with the tumor recurrence and overall survival in HBV-related HCC patients undergoing curative-intent hepatectomy. METHODS: Patients who underwent curative-intent hepatectomy for HBV-related HCC between 2014 and 2019 at 4 Chinese hospitals were analyzed. Patients were categorized as having undergone preoperative antiviral therapy (AVT) > 1 year or without antiviral therapy (non-AVT)...

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B is a potentially life-threatening liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and major global health problem, affecting millions of people globally. Whilst college or university students could serve as a positive vehicle that may aid in the propagation of education in the communities, there is currently paucity of data on knowledge of HBV and vaccination awareness among university students in Ghana. This study therefore assessed knowledge on hepatitis B virus infection, testing, and vaccination awareness among science and non-science students in Ghana...

AIM: It is not uncommon to encounter outpatients in the hepatology department with harmful alcohol habits. When treating such chronic liver disease (CLD) patients, an adequate intervention method for harm reduction of alcohol use, such as brief intervention (BI) or BI and nalmefene, should be considered. This study aimed to elucidate the clinical effectiveness of BI for CLD patients affected by harmful alcohol use. METHODS: From June 2021 to 2023, 123 Japanese CLD outpatients (hepatitis B virus : hepatitis C virus : alcoholic liver disease : others = 32:18:42:31) with an Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) score of ≥8 at the initial interview and a repeat interview with AUDIT 9 months later were enrolled...

Natural killer (NK) cells are one of the key members of innate immunity that predominantly reside in the liver, potentiating immune responses against viral infections or malignant tumors. It has been reported that changes in cell numbers and function of NK cells are associated with the development and progression of chronic liver diseases (CLDs) including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, alcoholic liver disease, and chronic viral hepatitis. Also, it is known that the crosstalk between NK cells and hepatic stellate cells plays an important role in liver fibrosis and cirrhosis...

BACKGROUND: Chronic/latent viral infections may accelerate immunological aging, particularly among people living with HIV (PLWH). We characterized chronic/latent virus infections across their lifespan and investigated their associations with leukocyte telomere length (LTL). METHODS: Participants enrolled in the CARMA cohort study were randomly selected to include n = 15 for each decade of age between 0 and >60 y, for each sex, and each HIV status. Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), and HSV-2 infection were determined serologically; HIV, hepatitis C (HCV), and hepatitis B (HBV) were self-reported...

Clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) in patients with compensated advanced chronic liver disease indicates an increased risk of decompensation and death. While invasive methods like hepatic venous-portal gradient measurement is considered the gold standard, non-invasive tests (NITs) have emerged as valuable tools for diagnosing and monitoring CSPH. This review comprehensively explores non-invasive diagnostic modalities for portal hypertension, focusing on NITs in the setting of hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis...

HBV-associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents the prevalent form of HCC, with HBx protein being a crucial oncoprotein. Numerous members of the protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor (PTPN) family have been confirmed to be significantly associated with the occurrence and progression of malignant tumors. Our group has previously identified the involvement of PTPN13 in HCC. However, the roles of other PTPNs in HCC still requires further investigation. In this study, we found PTPN18 expression was significantly downregulated within HCC tissues compared to that in adjacent non-tumor tissues and normal liver tissues...

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is currently one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide. Associated risk factors include, but are not limited to, cirrhosis and underlying liver diseases, including chronic hepatitis B or C infections, excessive alcohol consumption, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and exposure to chemical carcinogens. It is crucial to detect this disease early on before it metastasizes to adjoining parts of the body, worsening the prognosis. Serum biomarkers have proven to be a more accurate diagnostic tool compared to imaging...

Along with infecting hepatocytes, the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is also a lymphotropic virus. Chronic HCV infection can mutate the Bcl2, a proto-oncogene that inhibits apoptosis. This causes continuous stimulation of B lymphocytes, which results in clonal growth of these immunoglobulin-producing cells. In Western countries, there is a well-documented link between HCV and lymphoproliferative illness. HCV and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) have been found to be significantly correlated in Europe, Japan, and the southern United States...
