Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) and acute rheumatic fever (ARF) disproportionately affect individuals in low-resource settings. ARF is attributed to an immune response to Group A Streptococcus (GAS) following GAS pharyngitis and potentially GAS impetigo in which infection can be initiated by scabies infestation. The burden of ARF and RHD in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australia is among the highest globally. Following recent calls to include dog management programs in ARF and RHD prevention programs, we believe it is timely to assess the evidence for this, particularly since previous recommendations excluded resources to prevent zoonotic canine scabies...

Identifying causative toxicants in mixtures is critical, but this task is challenging when mixtures contain multiple chemical classes. Effect-based methods are used to complement chemical analyses to identify toxicants, yet conventional bioassays typically rely on an apical and/or single endpoint, providing limited diagnostic potential to guide chemical prioritization. We proposed an event-driven taxonomy framework for mixture risk assessment that relied on high-throughput screening bioassays and toxicant identification integrated by deep learning...

WHAT IS THIS SUMMARY ABOUT?: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic (long-lasting) skin disease that leads to dry, itchy, and swollen red spots, which can also be painful and flare up at any time. Some people with AD have a high number of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell, which are associated with worse disease. Medicated creams and lotions, prescribed by health care providers, are meant to reduce the symptoms of AD. For some people, these creams and lotions do not work. Benralizumab injection is a medication that reduces and removes eosinophils...

Background and Objectives: As cannabis use increases among reproductive-aged women, there is a growing need to better understand the presence of cannabinoids in milk produced by women using cannabis. It is unclear how concentrations of cannabinoids such as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9 -THC) persist in milk after cannabis use and what factors contribute to variation in milk Δ9 -THC concentrations. Our objectives were to measure cannabinoids in human milk following cannabis abstention, after single and repeated instances of cannabis use, and identify factors contributing to concentration variation...

INTRODUCTION: The increasing incidence of cancer and capacity for cancer care in Ethiopia has led to an upsurge in chemotherapy use in the country; however, studies indicate that there is a gap in the safe handling of chemotherapy by healthcare workers. There exists a need to understand if such unsafe practices occur in Ethiopia and, if so, which areas along the chemotherapy life cycle need the most improvement. METHODS: This study utilized a multi-method design through an online survey administered to health care professionals and evaluative site visits of eight cancer units in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to understand the current conditions of chemotherapy handling...

INTRODUCTION: Clozapine is the most effective antipsychotic in the management of treatment-resistant schizophrenia; however, its use is challenging due to the risk of severe adverse effects. Despite the risks associated with clozapine, there is no mandatory monitoring in Canada beyond hematologic testing for agranulocytosis surveillance. This study focuses on the development, implementation, and evaluation of a clozapine clinical toolkit (CTK) targeted at optimizing inpatient clozapine use...

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Severe hypertriglyceridemia (HTG), defined as plasma triglyceride (TG) concentration > 10 mmol/L, is relatively uncommon, and its implications for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk remain somewhat unclear. We evaluated the association between severe HTG and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), a marker for ASCVD. METHODS: We studied three clinical cohorts: 88 patients with severe HTG (mean TG level 20.6 mmol/L), 271 patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) as a contrast group, and 70 normolipidemic controls...

BACKGROUND: Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a potentially serious osteopathic disorder associated with coalescing ossifications of the anterior vertebrae and may be concomitant with a constellation of symptomatology and systemic comorbidities. There is limited dental literature describing this finding on panoramic radiographs and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. CASE PRESENTATIONS: Two case reports of DISH are provided. One patient manifested extensive ossifications along the cervical vertebrae and consequent episodes of dysphagia and hoarseness...

This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between mentorship, survivorship, and identity construction in people who have had gynecologic cancer and participated as mentors in a peer mentorship program. A qualitative descriptive study was designed, and hour-long semi-structured interviews with peer mentors were conducted. Interviews investigated how serving as a peer mentor influenced understanding of mentors' own cancer experiences. Thematic analysis was then conducted. All authors open-coded a subset of interviews to develop a codebook, which was then used to code the remaining transcripts...

High-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma is a rare and aggressive soft tissue tumor characterized by YWHAE::NUTM2A/B translocations, diagnosis at a median of 50-60 years, and a poor prognosis (overall survival 30%-40%). We describe a 16-year-old patient with high-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma and regional nodal and pulmonary metastases who is a long-term survivor after grossly complete tumor resection, intensive chemotherapy, and pelvic radiotherapy. We discovered a previously undescribed YWHAE::NUTM2E translocation in the tumor...

Diel rhythms are observed across taxa and are important for maintaining synchrony between the environment and organismal physiology. A striking example of this is the diel vertical migration undertaken by zooplankton, some of which, such as the 5 mm-long copepod Pleuromamma xiphias ( P. xiphias ), migrate hundreds of meters daily between the surface ocean and deeper waters. Some of the molecular pathways that underlie the expressed phenotype at different stages of this migration are entrained by environmental variables (e...

Introduction Quadratus lumborum (QL) block has previously been shown to provide improved analgesia in patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) under spinal anesthesia when compared to spinal anesthesia alone. Additionally, recent studies have shown the addition of intrathecal morphine (ITM) to provide superior postoperative analgesia in patients undergoing various surgical interventions including total knee arthroplasty under spinal anesthesia with peripheral nerve blockade. At this time, however, there has not been a study evaluating the effects of intrathecal morphine in patients undergoing THA under spinal anesthesia with QL block...

Functional interactions and anatomic connections between brain regions form the connectome. Its mathematical representation in terms of a graph reflects the inherent neuroanatomical organization into structures and regions (nodes) that are interconnected through neural fiber tracts and/or interact functionally (edges). Without knowledge of the ground truth topology of the connectome, functional (directional or nondirectional) graphs represent estimates of signal correlations, from which underlying mechanisms and processes, such as development and aging, or neuropathologies, are difficult to unravel...

Plant cells are a capable system for producing economically and therapeutically important proteins for a variety of applications, and are considered a safer production system than some existing hosts such as bacteria or yeasts. However, plants do not perform protein modifications in the same manner as mammalian cells do. This can impact on protein functionality for plant-produced human therapeutics. This obstacle can be overcome by creating a plant-based system capable of 'humanising' proteins of interest resulting in a glycosylation profile of synthetic plant-produced proteins as it would occur in mammalian systems...
