A ratiometric sensor with ultralow background is highly desired due to its low environmental influence and high sensitivity. Herein, inspired by the solubility difference of carboxylate in aqueous and organic solvents, we prepared a core-shell structure porous zirconia-covalent organic framework (COF) composite through thermal hydrolysis of UiO-66-COF precursors in organic alkali solution. The ligand 2-aminoterephthalic acids (H2 BDC-NH2 ) of UiO-66 were transformed into 2-aminoterephthalate salts (ATA salts) that existed in zirconium-oxo clusters building units...

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries are emerging as promising sustainable energy-storage devices. However, their cyclic stability is still a great challenge due to the inevitable parasitic reaction and dendrite growth induced by water. Herein, a cosolvent strategy based on competitive effect is proposed to address the aforementioned challenges. Ethanol with a higher Gutmann donor number demonstrates lower polarity and better wettability on the Zn surface compared with water, which endows ethanol with the ability of minimizing water activity by weakening H bonds and preferentially adsorbing on the Zn electrode...

A series of atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out with a hydrated 1,2-dimyristoyl- sn -glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) bilayer with the variation of glucose concentrations from 0 to 30 wt % in the presence of 0.3 M NaCl. The study suggested that although the thickness of the lipid bilayer dropped significantly with the increase in glucose concentration, it expanded laterally at high glucose levels due to the intercalation of glucose between the headgroups of adjacent lipids. We adopted the surface assessment via the grid evaluation method to compute the deviation of the bilayer's key structural features for the different amounts of glucose present...

Eccentric contraction (ECC) has been shown to induce leukocyte invasion into skeletal muscle, resulting in muscle inflammation. This study aimed to investigate whether prior ingestion of L-arginine (ARG), a nitric oxide precursor, inhibits ECC-induced macrophage invasion. Male Wistar rats received ARG in water for 7 days, beginning 3 days prior to ECC. ECCs were induced in the anterior crural muscles for 200 cycles. Three days later, the tibialis anterior and extensor digitorum longus muscles were excised for biochemical analysis and force measurement, respectively...

In the past two decades, the application of colloidal semiconductor-metal nanoparticles (NPs) as photocatalysts for the hydrogen generation from water has been extensively studied. The present body of literature studies agrees that the photocatalytic yield strongly depends on the electron donating agent (EDA) added for scavenging the photogenerated holes. The highest reported hydrogen production rates are obtained in the presence of ionic EDAs and at high pH. The large hydrogen production rates are attributed to fast hole transfer from the NP onto the EDAs...

Highly concentrated "'water-in-salt"' (WIS) electrolytes are promising for high-performance energy storage devices due to their wide electrochemical stability window. However, the energy storage mechanism of MnO2 in WIS electrolytes-based supercapacitors remains unclear. Herein, MnO2 nanoflowers are successfully grown on mesoporous bowl-like carbon (MBC) particles to generate MnO2 /MBC composites, which not only increase electroactive sites and inhibit the pulverization of MnO2 particles during the fast charging/discharging processes, but also facilitate the electron transfer and ion diffusion within the whole electrode, resulting in significant enhancement of the electrochemical performance...

Increasing occurrences of Microcystis surface scum have been observed in the context of global climate change and the increase in anthropogenic pollution, causing deteriorating water quality in aquatic ecosystems. Previous studies on scum formation mainly focus on the buoyancy-driven floating process of larger Microcystis colonies, neglecting other potential mechanisms. To study the non-buoyancy-driven rapid flotation of Microcystis , we here investigate the floating processes of two strains of single-cell species ( Microcystis aeruginosa and Microcystis wesenbergii ), which are typically buoyant, under light conditions (150 μmol photons s-1 m-2 )...

Real-world water wave fields exhibit significant nonlinear and nonisospectral characteristics, making it challenging to predict their evolution by relying solely on numerical simulation or exact solutions using integrable system theory. Hence, this paper introduces a fast and adaptive method of modal identification and prediction in nonisospectral water wave fields using the reduced-order nonlinear solution (RONS) scheme. Specifically, we discuss the coarse graining and mode extraction of wave field snapshots from the data-driven and physics-driven perspectives and utilize the RONS method for principle modal prediction of nonisospectral water wave fields...

First, amoxicillin's in vitro dissolution and stability in purified, soft, and hard water, as well as release kinetics from feed in simulated gastric and intestinal media were assessed. Then, pharmacokinetic parameters and bioavailability were determined in fasted and fed pigs using soft water, hard water, or feed as vehicles of administration following a balanced incomplete block design...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm is a community of bacteria that adhere to live or non-living surfaces and are encapsulated by an extracellular polymeric substance. Unlike individual planktonic cells, biofilms possess a notable inherent resistance to sanitizers and antibiotics. Overcoming this resistance is a substantial barrier in the medical and food industries. Hence, while antibiotics are ineffective in eradicating P. aeruginosa biofilm, scientists have explored alternate strategies, including the utilization of natural compounds as a novel treatment option...

Direct analysis of solid samples is always challenging for ionic sensors due to solidified elemental presence and matrix interference. For Cd transforming from soil samples, a metal ceramic heater (MCH) electrothermal vaporizer (ETV) coupled with a dielectric barrier discharge quartz trap (DBD-QT) was first utilized to fulfill the solid sampling and preconcentration of Cd in soil; for on-site analysis, a colorimetric sensor based on the trithiocyanuric acid (TMT) functionalized gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was chosen as a chromogenic analysis model...

Adsorption of biomacromolecules onto polymer surfaces, including microplastics (MPs), occurs in multiple environmental compartments, forming an ecocorona. Environmental DNA (eDNA), genetic material shed from organisms, can adsorb onto MPs which can potentially either (1) promote long-range transport of antibiotic resistant genes or (2) serve to gain insights into the transport pathways and origins of MPs by analyzing DNA sequences on MPs. However, little is known about the capacity of MPs to adsorb eDNA or the factors that influence sorption, such as polymer and water chemistries...
