We describe the case of a patient who presented with sudden onset vertigo and bilateral deafness while under immune checkpoint therapy for metastatic bronchial carcinoma. Extensive audiologic assessment and vestibular function testing, as well as cranial magnetic resonance imaging (cMRI) and lumbar puncture was performed. The diagnostic workup confirmed bilateral sensorineural deafness and bilateral loss of vestibular function, while imaging revealed enhancement of the vestibulocochlear nerve. Initially, immunotherapy with PD-L1 antibody atezolizumab was the assumed cause of the described symptoms...

OBJECTIVES: Large language models, including ChatGPT, has the potential to transform the way we approach medical knowledge, yet accuracy in clinical topics is critical. Here we assessed ChatGPT's performance in adhering to the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery guidelines. METHODS: We presented ChatGPT with 24 clinical otolaryngology questions based on the guidelines of the American Academy of Otolaryngology. This was done three times (N = 72) to test the model's consistency...

HYPOTHESIS: Preimplantation word scores cannot reliably predict postimplantation outcomes. BACKGROUND: To date, there is no model based on preoperative data that can reliably predict the postoperative outcomes of cochlear implantation in the postlingually deafened adult patient. METHODS: In a group of 228 patients who received a cochlear implant between 2002 and 2021, we tested the predictive power of nine variables (age, etiology, sex, laterality of implantation, preimplantation thresholds and word scores, as well as the design, insertion approach, and angular insertion depth of the electrode array) on postimplantation outcomes...

HYPOTHESIS: Cyclodextrin (CDX)-induced serum prestin burst is not dependent on outer hair cell (OHC) loss. BACKGROUND: Serum prestin has been proposed as a biomarker for ototoxicity. We recently used an automated Western approach to quantify serum prestin changes in a newly introduced model of CDX ototoxicity. To gain insights into prestin as a biomarker, here we further characterize serum prestin in the CDX model. METHODS: Guinea pigs were treated with 750, 3,000, or 4,000 mg/kg CDX, and serum samples were obtained through up to 15 weeks after exposure...

OBJECTIVE: Severely asymmetrical hearing loss (SAHL) is characterized by a moderately severe or severe hearing loss in one side and normal or mildly impaired controlateral hearing in the other. The Active tri-CROS combines the Contralateral Routing-of-Signal System (CROS, or BiCROS if the best ear is stimulated) and the stimulation of the worst ear by an in-the-canal hearing aid. This study aims to evaluate the benefit of the Active tri-CROS for SAHL patients. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective study was conducted from September 2019 to December 2020...

HYPOTHESIS: The behaviorally based programming with loudness balancing (LB) would result in better speech understanding, spectral-temporal resolution, and music perception scores, and there would be a relationship between these scores. BACKGROUND: Loudness imbalances at upper stimulation levels may cause sounds to be perceived as irregular, gravelly, or overly echoed and may negatively affect the listening performance of the cochlear implant (CI) user. LB should be performed after fitting to overcome these problems...
