The parents of a baby hospitalized in a neonatal unit are confronted with the trauma of premature birth. This group is also a form of passage, taking the place of ritual, allowing access to the parent-baby triad, in this sometimes so inhospitable universe.

After neonatal hospitalization, our healthcare system offers multidisciplinary care for premature babies and their families during the first years of life. However, there are disparities and gaps, particularly in the case of medium prematurity. Maternal and child protection, a major player in early prevention and family follow-up, is a partner likely to be able to deploy post-hospital support perspectives in favor of child development and parenting support.

Any premature birth can be traumatic, and a risk factor for the parenting process and the quality of parent-baby interactions. Average prematurity is no exception. It can undermine essential parenting functions, such as availability and sensitivity to the child, and generate interactive dysfunctions within parent-baby dyads. In some cases, it can lead to genuine psychopathological states.

Babies born prematurely are frequently prone to developmental disorders, which are all the more severe in babies of low gestational age. However, medium prematurity also generates its own set of difficulties, including sensory, motor, cognitive, behavioral, relational and emotional disorders. It is essential to gain a better understanding of the developmental trajectory of these children and its various ups and downs, in order to support their development as early as possible.

Children born with moderate prematurity are at increased risk of neonatal morbidity, rehospitalization during the first year, and subsequent medical and neurodevelopmental disorders. Care in a specialized environment, at best without separation of mother and child, is necessary. Early developmental support, particularly through skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding and couplet care, is recommended.

Despite its high prevalence, moderate prematurity has been little studied in comparison with great or very great prematurity. In order to better understand the causes of this under-representation in the literature and in post-hospital care, this article proposes to analyze the historical and medical issues surrounding prematurity, and to investigate the different representations, by caregivers and parents, of the subject of intermediate prematurity. Very preterm infants are at high risk of growth failure. Poor weight gain is a prominent risk factor for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and optimizing nutrition could potentially promote growth and reduce ROP.
