This paper analyzes the motivations of the British biochemist Joseph Needham for participating in 'the International Scientific Commission for the Investigation of the Facts Concerning Bacterial Warfare in Korea and China (ISC)' and his major roles within it during the Korean War. Needham stayed in China for four years starting in 1942 as a scientific counselor and director of the British Scientific Mission in China, which enabled him to interact with many Chinese scientists and politicians. Surprisingly, during this period (1944), Needham conducted an investigation into the Japanese military's use of bacterial warfare...

AIMS: The Post-extubation Assessment of Laryngeal Symptoms and Severity (PALSS) study systematically evaluates patient symptoms related to endotracheal intubation with mechanical ventilation, assesses laryngeal injury and voice function after extubation, and develops a screening tool to identify patients with clinically important, post-extubation laryngeal injury. DESIGN: Single-center, prospective observational cohort study conducted in 6 intensive care units (ICU)...

The incorporation of information and communication technologies in the power grids has greatly enhanced efficiency in the management of demand-responses. In addition, smart grids have seen considerable minimization in energy consumption and enhancement in power supply quality. However, the transmission of control and consumption information over open public communication channels renders the transmitted messages vulnerable to numerous security and privacy violations. Although many authentication and key agreement protocols have been developed to counter these issues, the achievement of ideal security and privacy levels at optimal performance still remains an uphill task...

Large herbivores are subject to handling and social stress in captivity. These may affect blood biochemical values, which motivated this research. Twelve healthy common eland (Taurotragus oryx) were monitored for 12 months. The animals were handled monthly, and blood samples were collected. Samples from every second month were analysed for 14 blood biochemical parameters. Temperament throughout the handling, as the summation of various behavioural responses, was calculated as a proxy of the stress generated during handling...

The Flint Water Crisis (FWC) was an avoidable public health disaster that has profoundly affected the city's residents, a majority of whom are Black. Although many scholars and journalists have called attention to the role of racism in the water crisis, little is known about the extent to which the public attributed the FWC to racism as it was unfolding. In this study, we used natural language processing to analyze nearly six million Flint-related tweets posted between April 1, 2014, and June 1, 2016. We found that key developments in the FWC corresponded to increases in the number and percentage of tweets that mentioned terms related to race and racism...

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), protocols with authentication and key agreement functions can enhance the security of the interaction between users and sensor nodes, guaranteeing the security of user access and sensor node information. Existing schemes have various security vulnerabilities and are susceptible to security attacks (e.g., masquerading user, password guessing, internal privilege, and MITT attacks), so they cannot meet the anonymity requirements or achieve forward security. To effectively improve the security performance of WSNs, an elliptic curve cryptography (ECC)-based three-factor authentication and key agreement scheme for WSNs is proposed...

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs) are a heterogeneous group of muscle disorders including adult and juvenile dermatomyositis, polymyositis, immune-mediated necrotising myopathy and sporadic inclusion body myositis, all of which present with variable symptoms and disease progression. The identification of effective biomarkers for IIMs has been challenging due to the heterogeneity between IIMs and within IIM subgroups, but recent advances in machine learning (ML) techniques have shown promises in identifying novel biomarkers...

Literature suggests a lack of research and guidelines for care at the end of treatment (EOT). To improve the transition to survivorship and determine any posttreatment challenges, this study explored the experiences of childhood cancer survivors (CCSs), parents/caregivers, and pediatric oncology health care professionals (HCPs) at EOT. People experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage face inequitable barriers to accessing nutritious foods and health services, resulting in significant health disparities. This study aimed to explore the barriers faced by organisations that provide food support to people experiencing disadvantage as well as to identify potential strategies to enhance this support for improved wellbeing of clients. Droëwors (dried sausage) is a unique dried meat product from South Africa, which is not smoked, fermented, nor is nitrite used in its production. The objective of the study was to compare the quality parameters and consumer acceptance of common eland meat droëwors with different quantities of added beef fat. Three treatments containing either 10, 15, or 20% (by weight) added beef fat were compared regarding chemical composition, fatty acid profiles, and sensory properties. Increasing the amount of fat in the dried product resulted in a significant decrease in the protein and ash percentages...

With improved understanding of disease pathogenesis and availability of outcome measures, there has been a remarkable increase in the number of therapeutic clinical trials in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (myositis) over the last three years reaching as many as five trials per site. These trials share similar design and inclusion/exclusion criteria resulting in a competitive clinical trial landscape in myositis. While these are exciting times for the myositis field, we have a number of concerns about the design and conduct of the myositis trials...

Insufficient hydration is prevalent amongst free living adults. This study investigated whether hypohydration alters 1) renal functional reserve, 2) the renal hemodynamic response to the exercise pressor reflex, and 3) urine concentrating ability during oral protein loading. In a block-randomized crossover design, 22 healthy young adults (11 females and 11 males) underwent 24 h fluid deprivation (Hypohydrated) or 24 h normal fluid consumption (Euhydrated). Renal functional reserve was assessed by oral protein loading...

To understand neurological complications of COVID-19 better both acutely and for recovery, we measured markers of brain injury, inflammatory mediators, and autoantibodies in 203 hospitalised participants; 111 with acute sera (1-11 days post-admission) and 92 convalescent sera (56 with COVID-19-associated neurological diagnoses). The international plant trade results in the accidental movement of invasive pests and pathogens, and has contributed significantly to recent range expansion of pathogens including Dothistroma septosporum. Seeds are usually thought to present a lower biosecurity risk than plants, but the importation of Pinus contorta seeds from North America to Britain in the mid-1900s, and similarities between British and Canadian D. septosporum populations suggests seeds could be a pathway. Dothistroma septosporum has not been isolated from seeds, but inadequately cleaned seed material could contain infected needle fragments...
