OBJECTIVE: Diet quality is significantly impacted by social and environmental factors. People experiencing socioeconomic disadvantage face inequitable barriers to accessing nutritious foods and health services, resulting in significant health disparities. This study aimed to explore the barriers faced by organisations that provide food support to people experiencing disadvantage as well as to identify potential strategies to enhance this support for improved wellbeing of clients. DESIGN: Semi-structured interviews using an exploratory approach and inductive thematic analysis...

Droëwors (dried sausage) is a unique dried meat product from South Africa, which is not smoked, fermented, nor is nitrite used in its production. The objective of the study was to compare the quality parameters and consumer acceptance of common eland meat droëwors with different quantities of added beef fat. Three treatments containing either 10, 15, or 20% (by weight) added beef fat were compared regarding chemical composition, fatty acid profiles, and sensory properties. Increasing the amount of fat in the dried product resulted in a significant decrease in the protein and ash percentages...

With improved understanding of disease pathogenesis and availability of outcome measures, there has been a remarkable increase in the number of therapeutic clinical trials in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (myositis) over the last three years reaching as many as five trials per site. These trials share similar design and inclusion/exclusion criteria resulting in a competitive clinical trial landscape in myositis. While these are exciting times for the myositis field, we have a number of concerns about the design and conduct of the myositis trials...

Insufficient hydration is prevalent amongst free living adults. This study investigated whether hypohydration alters 1) renal functional reserve, 2) the renal hemodynamic response to the exercise pressor reflex, and 3) urine concentrating ability during oral protein loading. In a block-randomized crossover design, 22 healthy young adults (11 females and 11 males) underwent 24 h fluid deprivation (Hypohydrated) or 24 h normal fluid consumption (Euhydrated). Renal functional reserve was assessed by oral protein loading...

Forty-four fallow deer bucks (10 months old; 22.9 ± 2.4 kg) were utilized to investigate the effects of immunocastration and amino acid supplementation on testes development. Immunocastrated bucks were administered Improvac® at weeks 1, 8, and 20 of this study (control group: intact males). Starting at week 8, half of each sex received rumen-protected lysine and methionine (3:1) supplementation. At slaughter (week 37/39), body size, internal fat deposits, antler size parameters, testes weight, testes surface color, cauda epididymal sperm viability and morphology, and seminiferous tubule circumference and epithelium thickness were determined...

BACKGROUND: A series of qualitative studies conducted by the OMERACT Myositis Working Group identified pain interference, fatigue, and physical function as highly important life impact domains for adults with idiopathic inflammatory myositis (IIM). In this study, our goal was to assess the responsiveness and minimal important difference of PROMIS pain interference (6a), fatigue (7a), and physical function (8b). To understand neurological complications of COVID-19 better both acutely and for recovery, we measured markers of brain injury, inflammatory mediators, and autoantibodies in 203 hospitalised participants; 111 with acute sera (1-11 days post-admission) and 92 convalescent sera (56 with COVID-19-associated neurological diagnoses). Here we show that compared to 60 uninfected controls, tTau, GFAP, NfL, and UCH-L1 are increased with COVID-19 infection at acute timepoints and NfL and GFAP are significantly higher in participants with neurological complications...

The international plant trade results in the accidental movement of invasive pests and pathogens, and has contributed significantly to recent range expansion of pathogens including Dothistroma septosporum. Seeds are usually thought to present a lower biosecurity risk than plants, but the importation of Pinus contorta seeds from North America to Britain in the mid-1900s, and similarities between British and Canadian D. septosporum populations suggests seeds could be a pathway. Dothistroma septosporum has not been isolated from seeds, but inadequately cleaned seed material could contain infected needle fragments...

Bold and comprehensive action is needed to prevent diet-related diseases in rural areas, which includes improving food environments to enable healthier dietary practices. Rural health services are integral to the health of rural populations, yet their role in community disease prevention is not swell understood. OBJECTIVES: Inclusion body myositis (IBM) is a progressive inflammatory-degenerative muscle disease of older individuals, with some patients producing anti-cytosolic 5'-nucleotidase 1A (NT5C1A, aka cN1A) antibodies. Human Leukocyte Antigens (HLA) is the highest genetic risk factor for developing IBM. Foam cell formation is a complex blood vessel pathology, which is characterized by a series of events, including endothelium dysfunction, inflammation, and accumulation of immune cells underneath the blood vessel walls. Novel bioengineered models capable of recapitulating these events are required to better understand the complex pathological processes underlying the development of foam cell formation and, consequently, advanced bioengineered platforms for screening drugs. Here, we generated a microfluidic blood vessel model, incorporating a three-dimensional (3D) extracellular matrix coated with an endothelial layer...
