In May 1968, Lars Leksell and Erik-Olof Backlund achieved a pioneering breakthrough by performing the first Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) on a craniopharyngioma (CP). Today, more than 50 years later, this patient remains under continuous monitoring, providing the longest documented follow-up of a GKRS-treated CP. This case report provides a complete record of the patient's preoperative presentation, surgical assessment, GKRS, and an extensive long-term follow-up with multiple interventions. The investigation involved analysis of archived and digitalized patient records and radiological images...

Amorphous, α, β, and γ-phase yttrium disilicate Y2 Si2 O7 pellets were synthesized by spark plasma sintering, and their chemical durability and degradation mechanisms were investigated via semi-dynamic leaching test in pH = 3 nitric acid at 90 °C. All crystalline phases displayed relatively congruent dissolution with a slight preferential release of Y. The amorphous sample showed clear incongruent dissolution with preferential release of Y, leading to a surface reorganization reaction and the formation of a SiO2 passivation layer 20-25 μm thick on the surface of the sample...

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a neoplasm of the biliary tract that has become increasingly prevalent throughout the world. Common risk factors for developing CCA include cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and trematode fluke infestation, although there are no set screening guidelines in high-risk groups. Lesions are typically identified via cross-sectional imaging and/or elevated serum carbohydrate antigen 19-9 levels, often followed by cytology or brushings with fluorescence in situ hybridization for confirmation...

PURPOSE: To evaluate the histopathologic changes and potential correlations of tissue radiation absorbed dose (TAD) after 90 Y transarterial radioembolization (TARE) for colorectal liver metastases (CLM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective pilot study assessed 12 patients with 13 (CLM) through PET/CT--guided biopsies before, immediately (T0) and 3 weeks (T3) after TARE. Subsequent sampling from the same location was enabled by fiducial placement. Biopsy samples were evaluated with hematoxylin-eosin (H&E), TUNEL, Ki67, OxPhos, caspase-3 (CC3), and pH2AX antibodies...

RATIONALE: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is pivotal in treating recurrent prostate cancer and is often combined with external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) for localized disease. However, for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, EBRT is typically only used in the palliative setting, because of the inability to radiate all sites of disease. Systemic radiation treatments that preferentially irradiate cancer cells, known as radiopharmaceutical therapy or targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT), have demonstrable benefits for treating metastatic prostate cancer...

OBJECTIVES: The frenum is a mucous membrane fold that attaches the lip and the cheek to the alveolar mucosa, the gingiva, and the underlying periosteum. Frenectomy is the surgical removal of the whole frenum, including the area connected to the bones. This study's purpose was to compare the healing period and postsurgical pain experienced by patients operated with diode and erbium:yttrium-aluminium-garnet (Er:YAG) lasers. METHODS: Twenty referred patients need to excision of the abnormal upper labial frenum were included in this study...

Craniopharyngioma is uncommon benign intracranial tumour that can be cured by surgical resection followed by conventional radiotherapy. However, its anatomical localisation makes the treatment hazardous or impossible. This case report aims to discuss the first local experience of using beta-emitting Yttrium-90 radioisotope in treating a patient with refractory cystic craniopharyngioma. A 43-year-old male who has underlying refractory cystic craniopharyngioma complicated with visual impairment and panhypopituitarism was referred to our nuclear medicine department for intra-cavitary irradiation therapy...

Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death. Liver metastases will develop in over one-third of patients with colorectal cancer and are a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Even though surgical resection has been considered the mainstay of treatment, only approximately 20% of the patients are surgical candidates. Liver-directed locoregional therapies such as thermal ablation, Yttrium-90 transarterial radioembolization, and stereotactic body radiation therapy are pivotal in managing colorectal liver metastatic disease...

Six filters (transmittances of 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90) were applied to simulate various levels of cloudy refractive medium. Calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) disease is a form of crystal-induced arthropathy that arises from the accumulation of calcium pyrophosphate crystals within joints and soft tissues. This process leads to inflammation and damage to the affected joints. It can present asymptomatically or as acute or chronic inflammatory arthritis. Risk factors and comorbidities, including prior joint injury, osteoarthritis, hereditary or familial predisposition, and metabolic diseases, should be evaluated in CPPD cases...

Transarterial radioembolization using yttrium-90 (90 Y) therapy has become a standard modality of treatment for primary and metastatic liver malignancies due to its high efficacy rate and relatively low risk of adverse effects compared to other forms of locoregional and systemic therapies. Non-target distribution of radio embolic beads and adjacent structure radiation are the two most common adverse effects. However, these are rarely encountered due to thorough imaging and mapping studies prior to 90 Y therapy...

Yttrium-90 (Y90) radioembolization has become a major locoregional treatment option for several primary and secondary liver cancers. Understanding the various factors that contribute to optimal tumor coverage including sphere count, embolization techniques, and catheter choice is important for all interventional radiologists while planning Y90 dosimetry and delivery. Here, we review these factors and the evidence supporting current practice paradigms.

Background: Hypoxia, a state of low oxygen level within a tissue, is often present in primary and secondary liver tumors. At the molecular level, the tumor cells' response to hypoxic stress induces proteomic and genomic changes which are largely regulated by proteins called hypoxia-induced factors (HIF). These proteins have been found to drive tumor progression and cause resistance to drug- and radiation-based therapies, ultimately contributing to a tumor's poor prognosis. Several imaging modalities have been developed to visualize tissue hypoxia, providing insight into a tumor's microbiology...
