BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common health problems worldwide and mainly affect women. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of UTIs in pregnant women and determine the antimicrobial resistance patterns of bacterial pathogens isolated from pregnant and nonpregnant women in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at an academic medical center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from January to June 2022...

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae (hvKp) is a significant cause of severe invasive infections in Vietnam, yet data on its epidemiology, population structure and dynamics are scarce. We screened hvKp isolates from patients with bloodstream infections (BSIs) at a tertiary infectious diseases hospital in Vietnam and healthy individuals, followed by whole genome sequencing and plasmid analysis. Among 700 BSI-causing Kp strains, 100 (14.3%) were hvKp. Thirteen hvKp isolates were identified from 350 rectal swabs of healthy adults; none from 500 rectal swabs of healthy children...

We evaluated whether the quantification of IgG to pneumococcal capsular polysaccharides is an accurate diagnostic test for pneumococcal infection in children with pneumonia in Nepal. Children with pneumococcal pneumonia did not have higher convalescent, or higher fold change, IgG to pneumococcal polysaccharides than children with other causes of pneumonia. Caution is needed in interpreting antibody responses in pneumococcal infections.

OBJECTIVE: Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) infection is a common respiratory illness in children, but the factors associated with its severity remain unclear. METHODS: The clinical data of 136 children aged 5 to 12 years with MP infection in our hospital from March 2021 to March 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. According to the severity of the disease, they were divided into a mild group (74 cases) and a severe group (62 cases), and 80 healthy children who underwent physical examination in our hospital during the same period were selected as the control group...

BACKGROUND: Data available for RSV and influenza infections among children < 2 years in Mongolia are limited. We present data from four districts of Ulaanbaatar from April 2015 to June 2021. METHODS: This study was nested in an enhanced surveillance project evaluating pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) impact on the incidence of hospitalized lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs). OBJECTIVES: To characterize the prescribing trends and clinical outcomes related to azithromycin (AZI) among children hospitalized for critical asthma (CA). METHODS: We performed a multicenter, retrospective cohort study using the Pediatric Health Information Systems registry of children 3 to 17 years of age hospitalized in a PICU for CA from January 2011 to December 2022. We excluded for alternative indications for AZI (eg, atypical pneumonia, B. pertussis infection, acute otitis media, acute sinusitis, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, and urethritis)...

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory illness is the most common childhood disease globally, especially in developing countries. Previous studies have detected viruses in approximately 70-80% of respiratory illnesses. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study of 234 young children (ages 3-11 years) and 30 adults (ages 22-51 years) in rural Western Uganda sampled monthly from May 2019 to August 2021, only 24.2% of nasopharyngeal swabs collected during symptomatic disease had viruses detectable by multiplex PCR diagnostics and metagenomic sequencing...

This study takes advantage of a natural experiment associated with appendicitis, in order to determine if anesthesia and surgery in childhood were specifically associated with subsequent neurobehavioral outcomes. BACKGROUND: In Uganda, village health workers (VHWs) manage childhood illness under the integrated community case management (iCCM) strategy. Care is provided for malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhoea in a community setting. Currently, there is limited evidence on the cost-effectiveness of iCCM in comparison to health facility-based management for childhood illnesses. This study examined the cost-effectiveness of the management of childhood illness using the VHW-led iCCM against health facility-based services in rural south-western Uganda...

The objective of the review was to determine the long-term outcomes of necrotising pneumonia (NP). Studies published since 1990 in English, Portuguese, or Spanish, published on PubMed and Scielo were evaluated. Our findings showed ultrasound scanning is the diagnostic modality of choice. Despite prolonged hospitalisation (median 13-27 days) and fever (median 9-16 days), most patients recover completely. Empyema and bronchopleural fistulae are frequent in bacterial NP. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most prevalent cause...

IMPORTANCE: There is a lack of randomized clinical trial (RCT) data to guide many routine decisions in the care of children hospitalized for common conditions. A first step in addressing the shortage of RCTs for this population is to identify the most pressing RCT questions for children hospitalized with common conditions. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the primary cause of bronchiolitis-related hospitalizations among children under 5 years of age, with reinfection being common throughout life. Maternal vaccination has emerged as a promising strategy, delivering elevated antibody levels to newborns for immediate protection. However, limited research has explored the protective efficacy of maternal antibodies (matAbs) against secondary RSV infections in offspring. To address this gap, we employed a mouse model of maternal RSV vaccination and secondary infection of offspring to evaluate lung pathology following RSV reinfection in mice with varying levels of maternal antibody (matAb)...
