Non-syndromic orofacial clefts (NSOCs) are the most common craniofacial malformation. In the complex aetiology and pathogenesis of NSOCs, genetic factors play a crucial role and IRF6, located at chromosome 1q32.2, is the best documented NSOC susceptibility gene. IRF6 is a key factor in oral maxillofacial development and known to contribute the most in NSOCs. It is essential to conduct a complete review of the existing results on IRF6 to further understand its role in the pathogenesis of NSOCs. Thus, the present authors summarised the research progress on the mechanism of IRF6 in NSOCs from both genetic and functional perspectives in this review...

BACKGROUND: Associations between the WNT5A rs566926 variant and non-syndromic orofacial cleft (NSOC) have been reported in different populations. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the role of the rs566926 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in WNT5A and its interactions with SNPs in BMP4, FGFR1, GREM1, MMP2, and WNT3 in the occurrence of NSOC in a Brazilian population. METHODOLOGY: A case-control genetic association study was carried out involving participants from four regions of Brazil, totaling 801 patients with non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL±P), 273 patients with cleft palate only (NSCPO), and 881 health volunteers without any congenital condition (control)...

BACKGROUND: Non-syndromic orofacial cleft (NSOC) is one of the most common craniofacial malformations with complex etiology. This study aimed to explore the role of specific SNPs in ZFP36L2 and its functional relevance in zebrafish models. METHODS: We analyzed genetic data of the Chinese Han population from two previous GWAS, comprising of 2512 cases and 2255 controls. Based on the Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE) and minor allele frequency (MAF), SNPs in the ZFP36L2 were selected for association analysis...

This study examines when and why unpaid caregivers use respite services. We conducted a secondary analysis of the 2017 National Study of Caregiving (NSOC) Wave III, a U.S. nationally representative sample comprising 2652 unpaid caregivers. We found that unpaid caregivers reporting financial, physical, and emotional difficulties in caregiving were more likely to use respite care services than those not reporting these challenges. White, non-Hispanic caregivers reporting that they received support from their social networks (families/friends) were more likely to use respite care services than non-White and/or Hispanic caregivers receiving such support...

Single-atom catalysts with maximized metal utilization and altered electronic structure are the most promising alternatives to replace current benchmark precious metals. In this work, we design a N, S, O self-doped carbon electrode (NSOC-800) with high capacitance and good stability via the carbonization of grapefruit peel via a one-step KOH activation method without extra dopants. The existence of heteroatoms enables the NSOC-800 to have a high specific capacitance of 280 F/g and a great cycling performance, with 90.1% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles. Moreover, the symmetric supercapacitor with NSOC-800 electrodes delivers a maximum energy density of 5 Wh/kg with a power density of 473 W/kg...

Oral clefts, including cleft lip (CL), cleft palate (CP), and cleft lip and palate (CLP), are the most common types of congenital anomalies of the human face. Various genetic and environmental factors play a role in developing oral clefts. Several studies have shown the association of the PAX7 gene and the 8q24 region with these oral clefts in different populations worldwide. However, there are no reported studies on the possible connection between the PAX7 gene and the 8q24 region nucleotide variants and the risk of developing nonsyndromic oral clefts (NSOC) in the Indian population...
