Whilst green space has been linked to healthier sleep outcomes, the roles of specific types of nature exposure, potential underlying mechanisms, and between-country variations in nature-sleep associations have received little attention. Drawing on cross-sectional survey data from an 18-country sample of adults (N = 16,077) the current study examined: 1) the relative associations between six different types of nature exposure (streetscape greenery, blue view from home, green space within 1 km, coast within 1 km, green space visits, blue space visits) and insufficient sleep (<6 h vs...

BACKGROUND: Dynamic compression plating is a fundamental type of bone fracture fixation used to generate interfragmentary compression. The goal of this study was to investigate the mechanics of the surgical application of these plates, specifically how plate prebend, screw location, fracture gap, and applied torque influence the resulting compressive pressures. METHODS: Synthetic bones with transverse fractures were fixed with locking compression plates. One side of the fracture was fixed with locking screws...

On December 5, 2022, an indirect drive fusion implosion on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved a target gain G_{target} of 1.5. This is the first laboratory demonstration of exceeding "scientific breakeven" (or G_{target}>1) where 2.05 MJ of 351 nm laser light produced 3.1 MJ of total fusion yield, a result which significantly exceeds the Lawson criterion for fusion ignition as reported in a previous NIF implosion [H. Human wastewater-derived pollution of the environment is an emerging health risk that increases the number of waterborne and foodborne illnesses globally. To better understand and mitigate such health risks, we investigated the prevalence of faecal indicator bacteria, Escherichia coli, and indicator virus (crAssphage) along with human and animal enteric viruses (adenoviruses, noroviruses, sapoviruses, hepatitis E virus) in shellfish and water samples collected from two shellfish harvesting areas in the UK. Human noroviruses were detected at higher detection rates in oyster and water samples compared to mussels with peaks during the autumn-winter seasons...

BACKGROUND: The PRAETORIAN score estimates the risk of failure of subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD) therapy, using generator and lead positioning on bidirectional chest radiographs. The PRAETORIAN-DFT trial investigates whether PRAETORIAN score calculation is non-inferior to defibrillation testing (DFT), with regard to first shock efficacy in spontaneous events. OBJECTIVE: This pre-specified sub-analysis assesses the predictive value of the PRAETORIAN score for defibrillation success in induced ventricular arrhythmias...

Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis (LMC) is an extremely rare site for metastasis from a primary ovarian cancer. LMC occurs when the thin layers of tissue that surround the brain and spinal cord are infiltrated by ovarian cancer metastasis. We present a case of a 63-year-old female with recurrent metastatic mucinous adenocarcinoma of the ovary who was diagnosed with LMC. While undergoing sixth-line chemotherapy, she presented with debilitating headaches and gait instability. Brain MRI revealed subarachnoid enhancement and other findings diagnostic of LMC...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Apathy strongly affects function in Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia, however its effect on function in Lewy Body Disease (LBD) has not been well-described. This study aims to (1) examine the prevalence and persistence of apathy in a large, national cohort of well-characterized patients with LBD, and (2) estimate the effect of apathy on function over time. METHODS: Study included 676 participants with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia in the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center Uniform Data Set...

Navitoclax (ABT-263) is an oral BCL2 homology-3 mimetic that binds with high affinity to pro-survival BCL2 proteins, resulting in apoptosis. Sorafenib, an oral multi kinase inhibitor also promotes apoptosis and inhibits tumor angiogenesis. The efficacy of either agent alone is limited; however, preclinical studies demonstrate synergy with the combination of navitoclax and sorafenib. In this phase 1 study, we evaluated the combination of navitoclax and sorafenib in a dose escalation cohort of patients with refractory solid tumors, with an expansion cohort in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)...

Despite vaccination and antiviral therapies, immunocompromised individuals are at risk for prolonged severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, but the immune defects that predispose an individual to persistent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remain incompletely understood. In this study, we performed detailed viro-immunologic analyses of a prospective cohort of participants with COVID-19. The median times to nasal viral RNA and culture clearance in individuals with severe immunosuppression due to hematologic malignancy or transplant (S-HT) were 72 and 40 days, respectively, both of which were significantly longer than clearance rates in individuals with severe immunosuppression due to autoimmunity or B cell deficiency (S-A), individuals with nonsevere immunodeficiency, and nonimmunocompromised groups ( P < 0...

Cytochrome P450s (CYP450s) are a versatile superfamily of enzymes known to undergo rapid evolution. They have important roles across growth and development pathways in crustaceans, although it is difficult to characterise orthologs between species due to their sequence diversity. Conserved CYP450s enzymes in crustaceans are those associated with ecdysteroidogenesis: synthesising and breaking down the active moult hormone, 20-hydroxyecdysone. The complex life cycle of the ornate spiny lobster, Panulirus ornatus , relies on moulting in order to grow and develop...

BACKGROUND: Clinical trials in heart failure (HF) traditionally use time-to-event analyses focusing on death and hospitalization for HF. These time-to-first event analyses may have more limited abilities to assess the probability of benefiting from a therapy, especially if that benefit manifests as improved functional status rather than reduced risk of death or HF hospitalization. Hierarchical end points including clinical outcomes and patient status measures allow for ranked evaluation of outcomes in 1 metric assessing whether patients randomized to intervention or control are more likely to derive an overall benefit while also allowing more patients to contribute to the primary outcome...

L-cysteine ethylester (L-CYSee) is a membrane-permeable analogue of L-cysteine with a variety of pharmacological effects. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of L-CYSee on morphine-induced changes in ventilation, arterial-blood gas (ABG) chemistry, Alveolar-arterial (A-a) gradient (i.e., a measure of the index of alveolar gas-exchange), antinociception and sedation in male Sprague Dawley rats. An injection of morphine (10 mg/kg, IV) produced adverse effects on breathing, including sustained decreases in minute ventilation...

BACKGROUND: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation can be curative for children with difficult-to-treat leukemia. The conditioning regimen utilized is known to influence outcomes. We report outcomes of the conditioning regimen used at the Alberta Children's Hospital, consisting of busulfan (with pharmacokinetic target of 3750 μmol*min/L/day ±10%) for 4 days, higher dose (250 mg/m2 ) fludarabine and 400 centigray (cGy) of total body irradiation. PROCEDURE: This retrospective study involved children receiving transplant for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)...

UNLABELLED: Immunization with mRNA or viral vectors encoding spike with diproline substitutions (S-2P) has provided protective immunity against severe COVID-19 disease. How immunization with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike elicits neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) against difficult-to-neutralize variants of concern (VOCs) remains an area of great interest. Here, we compare immunization of macaques with mRNA vaccines expressing ancestral spike either including or lacking diproline substitutions, and show the diproline substitutions were not required for protection against SARS-CoV-2 challenge or induction of broadly neutralizing B cell lineages...
