INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous abscess incision and drainage and foreign body removal are 2 common procedures in a variety of outpatient settings. The goal of this project was to create a novel, clean, reusable task trainer that could more accurately reproduce all the steps necessary to perform cutaneous abscess drainage or foreign body removal including ultrasound to identify the abscess cavity or foreign body. METHODS: The novel task trainer was constructed using silicone for both the base and the top skin...

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is widely regarded as an increasing threat to global public health. Antibiotic treatment guidelines have been increasingly recognized as an effective tool to guide appropriate prescriptions and help curtail antibiotic resistance. The present study aimed to assess physician's adherence to hospital antibiotic treatment guideline recommendations in Nepal and determine predictive variables with a significant association. This was a retrospective, monocentric observational review to investigate the adherence to endorsed guidelines using the medical records of adults admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of urinary tract infection (UTI), pneumonia, or skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) from January 2018 to December 2019...

We recently described the evolution of a community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) USA300 variant responsible for an outbreak of skin and soft tissue infections. Acquisition of a mosaic version of the Φ11 prophage (mΦ11) that increases skin abscess size was an early step in CA-MRSA adaptation that primed the successful spread of the clone. The present report shows how prophage mΦ11 exerts its effect on virulence for skin infection without encoding a known toxin or fitness genes...

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major inducement of nosocomial infections and its biofilm formation render the high tolerance to conventional antibiotics, which highlights the requirement to develop new antimicrobial agents urgently. In this study, we identified a fluorinated benzimidazole derivative, TFBZ, with potent antibacterial efficacy toward planktonic MRSA (MIC = 4 μg/mL, MBC = 8 μg/mL) and its persistent biofilms (≥99%, MBEC = 8 μg/mL)...

INTRODUCTION: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples (First Nations Australians) living in remote communities are hospitalised with skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) at three times the rate of non-First Nations Australians. The Torres Strait in tropical northern Australia has a highly dispersed population mainly comprising First Nations Australians. This study aimed to define the health service utilisation and health system costs associated with SSTIs in the Torres Strait and to improve the quality of regional healthcare delivery...

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global threat and AMR-attributable mortality is particularly high in Central, Eastern, Southern and Western Africa. The burden of clinically infected wounds, skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) and surgical site infections (SSI) in these regions is substantial. This systematic review reports the extent of AMR from sampling of these infections in Africa, to guide treatment. It also highlights gaps in microbiological diagnostic capacity. PubMed, MEDLINE and Embase were searched for studies reporting the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus, Eschericheria coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii in clinically infected wounds, SSTI and SSI in Central, Eastern, Southern or Western Africa, and studies reporting AMR from such clinical isolates...

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae is known for its increased extracellular polysaccharide production. Biofilm matrices of hypervirulent K. pneumoniae have increased polysaccharide abundance and are uniquely susceptible to disruption by peptide bactenecin 7 (bac7 (1-35)). Here, using confocal microscopy, we show that polysaccharides within the biofilm matrix collapse following bac7 (1-35) treatment. This collapse led to the release of cells from the biofilm, which were then killed by the peptide. Characterization of truncated peptide analogs revealed that their interactions with polysaccharide were responsible for the biofilm matrix changes that accompany bac7 (1-35) treatment...

Skin abscess is one of the most common infections of the skin and soft tissues. However, anaerobic bacteria are infrequently identified as the causative agents of this particular form of abscess. In this case, a 34-year-old pregnant woman was diagnosed with a skin abscess with the use of ultrasonography. The microbiological analysis results of the purulent fluid revealed the coinfection of Actinobaculum schaalii and Actinomyces turicensis . The patient was first treated empirically with 3 days of cefathiamidine, which resulted in no symptom improvement...

Here, we present a unique case of NTS Choleraesuis in a perianal abscess in an immunocompetent patient without any comorbidities.A woman in her late 40s was diagnosed with a perianal abscess with an unknown origin of infection. The patient has undergone an incision and drainage. Her pus culture and sensitivity report yielded Salmonella enterica serotype Choleraesuis...

Cellulitis, abscess, or both are among the most common skin and soft tissue infections. Typically, cellulitis arises due to bacterial penetration through breaches in the skin's protective barrier. However, in cases of facial cellulitis, it is necessary to consider not only the breakdown of the skin barrier but also to differentiate odontogenic cellulitis. A prompt and accurate diagnosis of facial infections stemming from dental issues, coupled with the administration of antibiotics and dental interventions, played a crucial role in resolving this condition...

Background Invasive disease due to group B Streptococcus (GBS) infection in adult males and nonpregnant females can cause various diseases, such as primary bacteremia, endocarditis, skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI), and meningitis. Especially in older people, invasive GBS infection has a high case fatality rate. In Saudi Arabia, little is known about the clinical signs and symptoms of GBS bacteremia and the associated risk factors and mortality rate. Methodology We performed a retrospective study at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, a large tertiary hospital, to investigate clinical disease, potential risk factors, susceptibility patterns, and mortality related to GBS in adult males and nonpregnant females diagnosed with GBS bacteremia...

Pilonidal sinus disease (PSD) manifests as an inflammatory skin condition typically emerging within the anal cleft. The prevalence of this disease varies in high income countries. This disease is associated with significant physical and psychosocial distress. Surgery is an option for managing PSD; yet, surgical methods vary, and a universally accepted gold standard approach is lacking, leading to current practices that are diverse and subject to ongoing debate. One such point of contention revolves around the decision to use packing or opt for a non-packing approach following surgery...
