Chromosomal abnormalities are associated with a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, one of the more commonly observed of which is epilepsy. The frequency, severity, and type of epileptic seizures vary according to the macro- and microrearrangements present. Even within a single chromosomal anomaly, we most often deal with a phenotypic spectrum. The aim of the study was to look for chromosomal rearrangements with a characteristic electroencephalographic pattern. Only a few disorders have peculiar electroclinical abnormalities: 1p36, 4p16, 6q terminal or trisomy 12p, Angelman syndrome, inv dup 15, 15q13...

We conducted a cross-sectional study to describe the health care problems of children with Down syndrome in Central Java, Indonesia. A total of 162 children (81 boys, 81 girls) with Down syndrome were included. Congenital heart defects and hypothyroidism were found in about 50%, followed by vision and hearing problems in 27.7% and 17.3%, respectively. Almost half of cases were diagnosed after the first month of age. Advanced maternal age was identified in more than 50%, and less than 10% was based on karyotype analysis...

Morgagni hernia (MH) is a rare form of congenital diaphragmatic hernia, typically occurring predominantly on the right side and exhibiting a higher prevalence in females. Usually diagnosed incidentally, MH may coexist with congenital heart defects, chest wall abnormalities and certain genetic syndromes such as Down syndrome. A 4-year-old boy with Down syndrome underwent simultaneous repair of MH and closure of a ventricular septal defect (VSD). A vertical midline sternotomy was performed, and the VSD was repaired using the right atrium approach...

INTRODUCTION: Social determinants of health (SDOH) may impact caregivers' ability to implement evidence-based health practices at home during early childhood, especially in families with children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Therefore, we examined the influence of SDOH and children's diagnosis (typically developing [TD], Down syndrome [DS], autism) on caregiver's self-report of meeting evidence-based health practices. METHODS: Caregivers (n=172) of children ages 2-6 years (TD: n=93, DS: n=40, autism: n=39) completed an online survey on SDOH and health practices related to child nutrition (CN), physical activity (PA), outdoor play (OP), and screen time (ST)...

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Even though the incidence has decreased in recent years, Down syndrome (DS) remains the most common chromosomal disorder today. Despite being a condition with multisystemic involvement, it often tends to affect the head and neck area, making it a frequent reason for consultation with pediatric otolaryngologists or otologists. The purpose of this work is to be one of the first in Spain to characterize and describe the pathology and therapeutic approach typically provided to these patients, analyzing the evolution from a clinical and auditory perspective...

Background and Aim . Down syndrome (DS) is the most common reason for disabilities caused by genetic disorders. Due to the special nature of this disease and the special needs of children with Down syndrome, they are required to receive their families' support. Therefore, the recognition of their problems and needs and also the alternatives for resolving them and promoting their life quality are very useful. Also, since very limited qualitative studies have been conducted, it seems necessary to design a qualitative study...

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to propose a theoretical framework integrating an ecological model with feminist theory for guiding future research in holistic nursing and healthcare about maternal experiences feeding children with Down syndrome. Background: Children with Down syndrome are at high risk for overweight and obesity, as well as feeding problems. Therefore, healthy weight promotion is crucial for children with Down syndrome. Feeding is one factor that may contribute to child weight. Literature on maternal experiences feeding children with Down syndrome, including the caregiving work involved in feeding, is limited...

Williams syndrome (WS) and Down syndrome (DS) are two neurodevelopmental disorders with distinct genetic origins characterized by mild to moderate intellectual disability. Individuals with WS or DS exhibit impaired hippocampus-dependent place learning and enhanced striatum-dependent spatial response learning. Here, we used the Weather Prediction Task (WPT), which can be solved using hippocampus- or striatum-dependent learning strategies, to determine whether individuals with WS or DS exhibit similar profiles outside the spatial domain...

To date, there have been no review articles specifically relating to the general efficacy and safety of coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) supplementation in younger subjects. In this article, we therefore reviewed the efficacy and safety of CoQ10 supplementation in neonates (less than 1 month of age), infants (up to 1 year of age) and children (up to 12 years of age). As there is no rationale for the supplementation of CoQ10 in normal younger subjects (as there is in otherwise healthy older subjects), all of the articles in the medical literature reviewed in the present article therefore refer to the supplementation of CoQ10 in younger subjects with a variety of clinical disorders; these include primary CoQ10 deficiency, acyl CoA dehydrogenase deficiency, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, migraine, Down syndrome, ADHD, idiopathic cardiomyopathy and Friedreich's ataxia...

This narrative review study investigates the correlations between obesity, allergies, and sleep-disordered breathing in pediatric populations. Searches for pertinent articles were conducted on the Medline PubMed Advanced Search Builder, Scopus, and Web of Science databases from unlimited to April 2024. Sleep-disordered breathing causes repeated upper airway obstructions, leading to apneas and restless sleep. Childhood obesity, which affects around 20% of children, is often associated with sleep-disordered breathing and allergies such as asthma and allergic rhinitis...

Down syndrome is the most common cause of intellectual disability, yet little is known about the neurobiological pathways leading to cognitive impairments. Electroencephalographic (EEG) measures are commonly used to study neurodevelopmental disorders, but few studies have focused on young children with DS. Here we assess resting state EEG data collected from toddlers/preschoolers with DS (n=29, age 13-48 months old) and compare their aperiodic and periodic EEG features with both age-matched (n=29) and cognitive-matched (n=58) comparison groups...
