The ability to move and self-organize in response to external stimuli is a fascinating feature of living active matter. Here, the metallo-dielectric rod-shaped microswimmers are shown to have a similar behavior in the presence of an AC electric field. The silica-copper Janus microrods were fabricated using the physical vapor deposition-based glancing angle deposition technique (GLAD). When the aqueous solution of the microrods was under the influence of an external AC electric field, they were found to exhibit different phases such as clustering, swimming, and vertical standing in response to variation of the applied frequency...

BACKGROUND: Exercise therapy (ET) is frequently an early treatment of choice when managing shoulder pain, yet evidence on its efficacy to expedite recovery is inconsistent. Moreover, the value of adding adjunct therapies (i.e. injections, manual therapy, electrotherapy) to ET is currently unclear. This study combined both direct and indirect evidence across studies on the effectiveness of ET with/without adjunct therapies compared to usual medical care for adults with chronic shoulder pain...

Realizing room-temperature, efficient, and reversible fluoride-ion redox is critical to commercializing the fluoride-ion battery, a promising post-lithium-ion battery technology. However, this is challenging due to the absence of usable electrolytes, which usually suffer from insufficient ionic conductivity and poor (electro)chemical stability. Herein we report a water-in-salt (WIS) electrolyte based on the tetramethylammonium fluoride salt, an organic salt consisting of hydrophobic cations and hydrophilic anions...

Elevated levels of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) in the atmosphere and the diminishing reserves of fossil fuels have raised profound concerns regarding the resulting consequences of global climate change and the future supply of energy. Hence, the reduction and transformation of CO2 not only mitigates environmental pollution but also generates value-added chemicals, providing a dual remedy to address both energy and environmental challenges. Despite notable advancements, the low conversion efficiency of CO2 remains a major obstacle, largely attributed to its inert chemical nature...

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome caused by pathogen infection, while the current antibiotics mainly utilized in clinical practice to combat infection result in the release of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) in the body. Herein, we provide an innovative strategy for controlling sepsis, namely, capturing active pathogens by means of extracorporeal blood purification. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were modified with dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DDA) through γ-ray irradiation-induced graft polymerization to confer a positive charge...

An in-depth study of the core-material thermal runaway reaction mechanism and reaction chain is a prerequisite for proposing a mechanism to prevent battery thermal runaway and enhance battery safety. In this study, based on a 24 Ah commercial Li(Ni0.6 Co0.2 Mn0.2 )O2 /graphite soft pack battery, the heat production characteristics of different state of charge (SOC) cathode and anode materials, the separator, the electrolyte, and their combinations of the battery were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry...

Electro-optical effect-based liquid crystal devices have been extensively used in optical modulation techniques, in which the Kerr coefficient reflects the sensitivity of the liquid crystals and determines the strength of the device's operational electric field. The Peterlin-Stuart theory and the O'Konski model jointly indicate that a giant Kerr coefficient could be obtained in a material with both a large geometrical anisotropy and an intrinsic polarization, but such a material is not yet reported. The status of land degradation of an OSR in southern Italy was assessed using a multisensor approach. It was based on: i) proximal sensors, including electromagnetic induction (EMI) for measuring soil electrical conductivity (ECa) and magnetic susceptibility (MSa), γ-ray spectrometry for K, eU and eTh analyses and ultrasonic penetrometry detecting cone index (CI) data representative of soil's strength, ii) field surveys on soil thickness (ST), and iii) laboratory analyses of potentially-toxic-elements (PTEs) by portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by gas-chromatography...

The global production landscape exhibits a substantial need for efficient and clean energy. Enhancing and advancing energy storage systems are a crucial avenue to optimize energy utilization and mitigate costs. Lithium batteries are the most effective and impressive energy utilization system at present, with good safety, high energy density, excellent cycle performance, and other advantages, occupying most of the market. However, due to the defects in the electrode material of the battery itself, the electrode will undergo the process of expansion, stress evolution, and electrode damage during electro-chemical cycling, which will degrade battery performance...

In this paper, two experimental procedures are reported, namely electro-deposition in the ultrathin liquid layer and chemical micro-etching. Firstly, a large area quasi-two-dimensional periodic membrane with adjustable density is deposited on a Si substrate driven by half-sinusoidal voltage, which is composed of raised ridges and a membrane between the ridges. The smaller the voltage frequency is, the larger the ridge distance is. The height of a raised ridge changes synchronously with the amplitude. The grain density distribution of membrane and raised ridge is uneven; the two structures change alternately, which is closely related to the change of growth voltage and copper ion concentration during deposition...
