CASE: This is a first report describing preservation of the femoral head by transcervical resection of proximal femoral Ewing sarcoma in 2 pediatric patients. A unique Capanna reconstruction supported joint salvage. At 1 year, Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument and Pediatric Toronto Extremity Salvage Score outcomes were excellent. Surveillance magnetic resonance imaging was without evidence of recurrence or impaired perfusion to the femoral head. CONCLUSION: We demonstrate the feasibility of hip joint preservation and maintenance of femoral head viability after transcervical resection of pediatric proximal femur bone sarcomas while preserving the medial circumflex femoral artery...

Cardiovascular dysfunctions complicate 10-20% of pregnancies, increasing the risk for postpartum mortality. Various gestational insults, including preeclampsia are reported to be associated with adverse maternal cardiovascular outcomes. One such insult, gestational hyperandrogenism increases the risk for preeclampsia and other gestational morbidities but its impact on postpartum maternal health is not well known. We hypothesize that gestational hyperandrogenism such as testosterone (T) excess will adversely impact the maternal heart in the postpartum period...

The recent advances in artificial intelligence modern approaches can play vital roles in the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT). Automatic diagnosis is one of the most important topics in the IoMT, including cancer diagnosis. Breast cancer is one of the top causes of death among women. Accurate diagnosis and early detection of breast cancer can improve the survival rate of patients. Deep learning models have demonstrated outstanding potential in accurately detecting and diagnosing breast cancer. This paper proposes a novel technology for breast cancer detection using CrossViT as the deep learning model and an enhanced version of the Growth Optimizer algorithm (MGO) as the feature selection method...

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine inflammation is considered a major cause of brain injury in preterm infants, leading to long-term neurodevelopmental deficits. A potential contributor to this brain injury is dysregulation of neurovascular coupling. We have shown that intrauterine inflammation induced by intra-amniotic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in preterm lambs, and postnatal dopamine administration, disrupts neurovascular coupling and the functional cerebral haemodynamic responses, potentially leading to impaired brain development...

Small ruminants affected by brucellosis, caused mainly by Brucella melitensis and B. ovis, suffer reproductive disorders, leading to significant economic losses worldwide. Vaccination is an essential tool to prevent the disease in ovine and caprine livestock, but the only vaccine recommended to date is B. melitensis Rev1, which in sheep is only safe for use in lambs aged 3-4 months. This restriction poses considerable practical challenges for the implementation of Rev1 in countries with endemic brucellosis and/or limited resources, where there is a need for mass vaccination with a safe vaccine to control the disease in both animals and humans...

Tuberculosis can present in various atypical forms. The clinical manifestations could involve sites like bones. Tuberculosis of the scapula, humerus, and posterolateral thoracic wall is extremely rare, and diagnosis is challenging due to similarities with conditions like tumors. A young boy presented with swelling of the right shoulder joint for three months. The diagnosis was challenging due to similarities with Ewing's sarcoma on the initial radiometric workup. A clinical assessment and diagnostic workup with biopsy, a cartridge-based nucleic acid amplification test, and an advanced radiometric investigation resulted in a final diagnosis...

Aptamers are a class of molecular recognition elements that exhibit high binding affinity and specificity against their respective targets. In view of the many advantages aptamers harbor over their counterpart antibodies, we were impelled to isolate an RNA aptamer against progesterone receptor, particularly its DNA binding domain. A total of eight SELEX cycles were executed against the recombinant Progesterone Receptor DNA-binding domain (PR DBD). The RNA-protein complex in the gel shift assay was subjected to crush and soak method to elute the binders prior to conventional sequencing, the step of which was based upon to coin the term CRUSOAK-SELEX...

The majority of new HIV infections in the US occur among sexual minority men (SMM) with older adolescent and emerging adult SMM at the highest risk. Those in relationships face unique HIV prevention challenges. Existing sexual HIV transmission risk interventions for male couples often encounter implementation challenges and engaging younger SMM early in relationships may be particularly difficult. This pilot randomized controlled trial evaluated the acceptibility and feasibility of We Test HIV testing - a behavioral health intervention tailored for younger SMM in realtionships - and generated preliminary estimates of effect size...

Novel therapeutic approaches are needed for the treatment of Ewing sarcoma tumors. We previously identified that Ewing sarcoma cell lines are sensitive to drugs that inhibit protein translation. However, translational and therapeutic approaches to inhibit protein synthesis in tumors are limited. In this work, we identified that reactive oxygen species, which are generated by a wide range of chemotherapy and other drugs, inhibit protein synthesis and reduce the level of critical proteins that support tumorigenesis in Ewing sarcoma cells...

COVID-19 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has significantly impacted public health and the economy worldwide. Most of the currently licensed COVID-19 vaccines act by inhibiting the receptor-binding function of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. The constant emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants resulting from mutations in the receptor-binding domain (RBD) leads to vaccine immune evasion and underscores the importance of broadly acting COVID-19 vaccines. Inactivated whole virus vaccines can elicit broader immune responses to multiple epitopes of several antigens and help overcome such immune evasions...
