Traditionally, alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) uses diaphragms to separate anode and cathode and is operated with 5-7 M KOH feed solutions. The ban of asbestos diaphragms led to the development of polymeric diaphragms, which are now the state of the art material. A promising alternative is the ion solvating membrane. Recent developments show that high conductivities can also be obtained in 1 M KOH. A third technology is based on anion exchange membranes (AEM); because these systems use 0-1 M KOH feed solutions to balance the trade-off between conductivity and the AEM's lifetime in alkaline environment, it makes sense to treat them separately as AEM WE...

To investigate the influence of COVID-19 lockdown measures on PM2.5 and its chemical components in Shenyang, PM2.5 samples were continuously collected from January 1 to May 31, 2020. The samples were then analyzed for water-soluble inorganic ions, metal elements, organic carbon, and elemental carbon. The findings indicated a significant decrease in PM2.5 and its various chemical components during the lockdown period, compared to pre-lockdown levels (p < 0.05), suggesting a substantial improvement in air quality...

The iron-modified coal gasification slag (Fe-CGS) material has excellent performance in purifying heavy-metal-contaminated water due to its good surface properties and adsorption capacities. However, it is unclear whether it can provide long-term simultaneous stabilization of Cd and As in composite-contaminated soils in extreme environments. This study investigated the long-term stabilization of Cd and As in acidic (JLG) and alkaline (QD) soils by simulating prolonged heavy rainfall with the addition of Fe-CGS...

In recent years, anion exchange membranes (AEMs) have aroused widespread interest in hydrogen production via water electrolysis using renewable energy sources. The two current commercial low-temperature water electrolysis technologies used are alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) and proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis. The AWE technology exhibited the advantages of high stability and increased cost-effectiveness with low hydrogen production efficiency. In contrast, PEM water electrolysis exhibited high hydrogen efficiency with low stability and cost-effectiveness, respectively...

Soft drinks may have a deleterious effect on dental health due to a high titratable acidity and a low pH that could be sufficient to induce tooth demineralization. The use of oral care products immediately after acidic challenge may diminish the erosive potential of soft drinks. We assessed the effect of oral care foams and a spray on salivary pH changes after exposure to Coca-Cola® in young adults. Thirty-three consenting eligible patients were recruited in this double-blind, randomized, crossover study performed in six visits...

Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) offers a sustainable strategy for producing fuels and chemicals. However, it suffers from sluggish CO2 activation and slow water dissociation. In this work, we construct a (P-O)δ- modified In catalyst that exhibits high activity and selectivity in electrochemical CO2 reduction to formate. A combination of in-situ characterizations and kinetic analyses indicate that (P-O)δ- has a strong interaction with K+(H2O)n, which effectively accelerates water dissociation to provide protons...

This study aimed to improve biochar's quality for arid land applications by using elemental sulfur as a pH reducer agent co-applied with compost or vermicompost as biological activators. Biochar pH was decreased by the addition of elemental sulfur, with the highest reduction from 8.1 to 7.2 occurring when co-amended with vermicompost. Elemental sulfur increased the water-soluble concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and many other elements, and stimulated substrate-induced respiration, especially when co-amended with vermicompost...

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have received increased attention due to their environmental prevalence and threat to public health. Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is an ultrashort-chain PFAS and the simplest perfluorocarboxylic acid (PFCA). While the US EPA does not currently regulate TFA, its chemical similarity to other PFCAs and its simple molecular structure make it a suitable model compound for studying the transformation of PFAS. We show that hydrothermal processing in compressed liquid water transforms TFA at relatively mild conditions (T = 150-250 °C, P < 30 MPa), initially yielding gaseous products, such as CHF3 and CO2 , that naturally aspirate from the solution...

Here, the porous Ni2 P-FeP x nanomaterials were successfully prepared by hydrothermal method, nickel foam as the base, iron nitrate solution as the caustic agent and iron source, and finally phosphating at low temperature. Reactive metals hydrolysis offers significant advantages for hydrogen storage and production. However, the regeneration of common reactive metals (e.g., Mg, Al, etc.) is energy-intensive and produces unwanted byproducts such as CO2 and Cl2. Herein, we employ Zn as a reactive mediator that can be easily regenerated by electrolysis of ZnO in an alkaline solution with a Faradaic efficiency of > 99.9%. H2 is produced in the same electrolyte by constructing a Zn-H2O hydrolysis battery consisting of a Zn anode and a Raney-Ni cathode to unlock the Zn-H2O reaction...

This study investigated impact of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) on thermal aggregation and gelling behavior of myosin in relation to varied pHs. Results revealed that HDL modified myosin structure before and after heating, with distinct effects observed at varied pH. Under pH 5.0, both myosin and HDL-MS exhibited larger aggregates and altered microstructure; at pH 7.0 and 9.0, HDL inhibited myosin aggregation, resulting in enhanced solubility, reduced turbidity and particle size. Comparative analysis of surface hydrophobicity, free sulfhydryl groups and secondary structure highlighted distinct thermal aggregation behavior between MS and HDL-MS, with the latter showing inhibitory effects under neutral or alkaline conditions...

Affordable and abundant sources of green hydrogen can give a large impetus to the Energy Transition. While conventional water electrolysis has positioned itself as a prospective candidate for this purpose, it lacks cost competitiveness. Hybrid water electrolysis (HWE) has been praised for its ability to address the issues of conventional water electrolysis due to its decreased energy requirements and its ability to generate value-added products, among other advantages. In this perspective, we discuss the challenges related to the applicability of HWE, using the glycerol oxidation reaction as an example, and we identify pitfalls often found in the literature...

Cost-effective transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) are highly promising electrocatalysts for both alkaline and acidic hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). However, unsatisfactory HER kinetics and stability have severely hindered their applications in industrial water electrolysis. Herein, a nanoflowers-shaped W-doped cubic/orthorhombic phase-mixed CoSe2 catalyst ((c/o)-CoSe2 -W) is reported. The W doping induces spontaneous phase transition from stable phase cubic CoSe2 to metastable phase orthorhombic CoSe2 , which not only enables precise regulation of the ratio of two phases, but also realizes W doping at the interfaces of two phases...

The bundle sheath cell (BSC) layer tightly enveloping the xylem throughout the leaf is recognized as a major signal-perceiving "valve" in series with stomata, regulating leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) and thereby radial water flow via the transpiring leaf. The BSC blue light (BL) signaling pathway increases Kleaf and the underlying BSC water permeability. Here, we explored the hypothesis that BSCs also harbor a Kleaf-downregulating signaling pathway related to the stress phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA)...
