In this study, biodegradable active films were prepared from potato starch and polyvinyl alcohol at different proportions, mixed with acetone extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (HS) and using glycerol as a plasticizer. Functional properties, antimicrobial, and antioxidant capacity were evaluated. Potato starch films with a proportion of polyvinyl alcohol up to 50% and HS extract had significant antioxidant capacity and antibacterial effect against most of the analyzed strains. Adding polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) and HS extract improved the mechanical performance and reduced water vapor permeability of the materials...

The single-unit monomer insertion (SUMI), derived from living/controlled polymerization, can be directly functionalized at the end or within the chain of polymers prepared by living/controlled polymerization, offering potential applications in the preparation of polymers with complex architectures. Many scenarios demand the simultaneous incorporation of monomers suitable for different polymerization methods into complex polymers. Therefore, it becomes imperative to utilize SUMI technologies with diverse mechanisms, especially those that are compatible with each other...

Food traceability and authentication systems play an important role in ensuring food quality and safety. Current techniques mainly rely on direct measurement by instrumental analysis, which is usually designed for one or a group of specific foods, not available for various food categories. To develop a general strategy for food identification and discrimination, a novel method based on fluorescence sensor arrays is proposed, composed of supramolecular assemblies regulated by non-covalent interactions as an information conversion system...

High-silica CHA zeolite membranes are highly desired for natural gas upgrading because of their separation performance in combination with superior mechanical and chemical stability. However, the narrow synthesis conditions range significantly constrains scale-up preparation. Herein, we proposed a facile interzeolite conversion approach using FAU zeolite to prepare SSZ-13 zeolite seeds, featuring a shorter induction and a longer crystallization period of the membrane synthesis. The membrane thickness was constant at ~3 μm over a wide span of synthesis time (24 ~ 96 h), while the selectivity (separation efficiency) was easily improved by extending synthesis time without compromising permeance (throughput)...

Nevertheless, the weak thermostability of AChE restricts its utilization due to the complexities associated with production, storage, and application environments. By evaluating the binding affinity between representative AChE and insecticides, an AChE from Culex pipiens was screened out, which displayed a broad-spectrum and high sensitivity to insecticides...

Pickering foam is a type of foam stabilized by solid particles known as Pickering stabilizers. These solid stabilizers adsorb at the liquid-gas interface, providing superior stability to the foam. Because of its high stability, controllability, versatility, and minimal environmental impact, nanomaterial-stabilized Pickering foam has opened up new possibilities and development prospects for foam applications. This review provides an overview of the current state of development of Pickering foam stabilized by a wide range of nanomaterials, including cellulose nanomaterials, chitin nanomaterials, silica nanoparticles, protein nanoparticles, clay mineral, carbon nanotubes, calcium carbonate nanoparticles, MXene, and graphene oxide nanosheets...

Vitamin D deficiency in Cd-exposed rats is associated with increased cadmium accumulation in tissues. Finding a cost-effective medication that is vital for the body while also reducing the effects of poisoning is crucial in treating poisonings. To investigate the mechanisms of Cd-induced lung toxicity, we examined the impact of prolonged Cd exposure in female rats before pregnancy on newborn lung health, focusing on sera TNF-α level, lung P53, Foxo1 mRNA, and lung VEGF, and BMP-4 protein level...

In situ monitoring of intracellular microRNAs (miRNAs) often encounters the challenges of surrounding complexity, coexistence of precursor miRNAs (pre-miRNAs) and the degradation of biological enzyme in living cells. Here, we designed a novel probe encapsulated DNA tetrahedral molecular sieve (DTMS) to realize the size-selective detection of intracellular miRNA 21 that can avoid the interference of pre-miRNAs. In such strategy, quencher (BHQ-1) labeled probe DNA (S6-BHQ 1) was introduced into the inner cavity of fluorophore (FAM) labeled DNA tetrahedral scaffolds (DTS) to prepare DTMS, making the FAM and BHQ-1 closely proximate, and resulting the sensor in a "signal-off" state...

It is a famous classical formula with antipyretic effects frequently utilized in ancient China, although our knowledge about the overall antipyretic mechanism of QP remains limited. BACKGROUND: Inflammation and infection of the middle ear, known as otitis media (OM), is a leading cause of hearing loss and the most frequently diagnosed disease in children worldwide. Traditionally, mouse models for OM rely on inducing acute infection through inoculation of the middle ear, e.g. with the human otopathogen non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi), and with very few genetic models with spontaneous or chronic OM. A2ML1 variants, including loss-of-function variants, were associated with susceptibility to OM in humans, but no animal model has been reported for A2ml1-related OM...
