One cannot survive without regularly urinating and defecating. People with neurological injury (spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, stroke) or disease (multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, spina bifida) and many elderly are unable to voluntarily initiate voiding. The great majority of them require bladder catheters to void urine and "manual bowel programs" with digital rectal stimulation and manual extraction to void stool. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections frequently require hospitalization, while manual bowel programs are time-consuming (1-2 hours), stigmatizing, and cause rectal pain and discomfort...

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of long-term spinal and sacral programmable neurostimulation for pelvic organ dysfunction in patients with myelodysplasia and chronic dysfunction of the bladder and rectum. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective study included 32 children aged 1-17 years (mean 10.7) with myelodysplasia, pelvic organ dysfunction and ineffective therapy including botulinum therapy and exclusion of tethered spinal cord syndrome. All children underwent comprehensive urodynamic examination with analysis of bladder and residual urine volume, mean flow rate, intravesical pressure and total urine volume, as well as electromyographic examination...

BACKGROUND: The accuracy of self-reported urinary incontinence (UI) and fecal incontinence (FI) among adults with spina bifida (SB) is unknown. We aimed to quantify the accuracy of self-reported recall incontinence in the last 4 weeks using prospective diary data. METHODS: Adults with SB were enrolled via patient advocacy groups in a larger 30-day smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment study of daily well-being and incontinence. We examined agreement between yes/no questions on exit questionnaires ("In the last 4 weeks, did you leak any urine and get your underwear, pads, pull-ups or disposable underwear wet?") and 30-day diaries...

This study aimed to identify differences in caregiver burden related to toileting assistance, and examine the factors associated with the most burdensome aspects of providing toileting assistance. In 2019, a self-administered postal survey was conducted with 743 caregivers of older adults who received subsidies for continence products in Komatsu City, Japan. Both family caregivers and nursing home staff answered questions regarding older adults' urinary/fecal symptoms, toileting assistance, and perceived caregiver burden...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Dural ectasia, which is often idiopathic, is seen both in patients with neurofibromatosis and Marfan's syndrome. In neurofibromatosis, the ectasia is most often seen in the thoracic region but can occur at any point along the dura. A complication such as cauda equina syndrome is usually rare. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 48 year old male complaining of recurrent throbbing headache, for 3 years, 2 years ago he developed progressively lower back pain, associated with numbness and tingling sensation of the lower limbs...

This study aims to identify health factors associated with incontinence in pre-frail or frail older adults living in the community. METHODS: This multicentre cross-sectional study included 225 older adults (75.0±6.4 years) with pre-frailty or frailty based on the five-component Fried phenotype. Central nervous system involvement in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is less common and usually presents as white matter lesions, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), or transverse myelitis. NMOSD is an immune-mediated inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system with a high rate of relapse and significant disability. Studies have shown that patients with pSS combined with NMOSD have more severe symptoms and poorer prognosis. Here, we present a case of critical illness in pregnancy-associated NMOSD combined with Sjögren's syndrome...

A 2-year-old female Vietnamese potbellied pig was referred to the Large Animal Teaching Hospital at the Ontario Veterinary College for anoplasty and rectovaginal fistula repair. The presence of atresia ani and rectovaginal fistula had been previously diagnosed. Contrast radiography was used to confirm the diagnosis and determine the position of the fistula and terminal rectum. Under general anesthesia, the urethra was catheterized. An incision was made at the anatomic location of the anus, the rectovaginal fistula was isolated through deep dissection, and a Penrose drain was placed around it for caudal retraction...

While the disease is generally considered treatable during the early stages, the rarity of this condition often leads to delays in diagnosis and treatment. This study aims to report the clinical characteristics of pediatric patients with spinal neuroschistosomiasis (NS) in an endemic area to the disease. Introduction: Urinary dysfunction has a strong impact clinically, socially, and economically. Although the development of acute urinary dysfunction in hospitalized patients with cancer is common in clinical practice, its occurrence and management strategies are scant in the literature. It has been reported as one of the more common medical complications in patients with cancer undergoing acute inpatient rehabilitation. BACKGROUND: Clinician-based reporting of adverse events leads to underreporting and underestimation of the impact of adverse events on prostate cancer patients. Therefore, interest has grown in capturing adverse events directly from patients using the Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs) version of the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE). We aimed to develop a standardized PRO-CTCAE subset tailored to adverse event monitoring in prostate cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used a mixed-method approach based on the 'phase I guideline for developing questionnaire modules' by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life group, including a literature review, and interviews with patients (n = 30) and health care providers (HCPs, n = 16)...
