INTRODUCTION: The experiment was set to determine the effects of long-term (55-day) use of three commercial prebiotics including Saccharomyces cerevisiae -derived β-glucans and one including inulin on juvenile vimba (Vimba vimba) reared intensively under controlled conditions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six-month-old fish were fed commercial feed (Control group, n = 90), or the same feed supplemented with 0.02% Leiber Beta-S (BS group, n = 90), 0.20% Biolex MB40 (MB group, n = 90), 0...

Callose is an important polysaccharide composed of beta-1,3-glucans and is widely implicated in plant development and defense responses. Callose synthesis is mainly catalyzed by a family of callose synthases, also known as glucan synthase-like (GSL) enzymes. Despite the fact that GSL family genes were studied in a few plant species, their functional roles have not been fully understood in woody perennials. In this study, we identified total of 84 GSL genes in seven plant species and classified them into six phylogenetic clades...

An eight-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of a dietary β-glucan application strategy on the growth performance, physiological response, and gut microbiota of Pacific white shrimp ( Litopenaeus vannamei ) (0.49 ± 0.17 g) under low salinity. Six feeding strategies were established, including a continuous β-glucan-free diet group (control), a continuously fed group with a 0.1% β-glucan diet (T1), and groups with the following intermittent feeding patterns: 1 day of β-glucan diet and 6 days of β-glucan-free diet (T2), 2 days of β-glucan diet and 5 days of β-glucan-free diet (T3), 3 days of β-glucan diet and 4 days of β-glucan-free diet (T4), and 4 days of β-glucan diet and 3 days of β-glucan-free diet (T5) each week...

The administration of yeast products as feed additives has been proven to beneficially affect animal productivity through energy, oxidative, and immune status improvement. This study evaluated a combination of Saccharomyces cerevisiae live yeast (LY) with yeast postbiotics (rich in mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) and beta-glucans) and selenium (Se)-enriched yeast on ewes' milk performance and milk quality, energy and oxidative status, and gene expression related to their immune system during the peripartum period...

Five fruit and vegetable byproducts were evaluated as carbon sources and media for beta-glucan production from Euglena gracilis. Orange peel showed the highest beta-glucan concentration (6.5 g/L) and productivity (1.9 g/L/day) when used as a medium. However, when employed as carbon sources, apple pomace showed the highest beta-glucan concentration (10.6 g/L) and productivity (3.5 g/L/day). The appropriate chemical oxygen demand/nitrogen ratio (71.1) and favorable carbon sources of apple contributed to beta-glucan production...

BACKGROUND: Pediatric oncology patients with prolonged (≥96 hours) febrile neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count < 500/μL) often undergo an evaluation for invasive fungal disease (IFD) and other infections. Current literature suggests that beta-D-glucan (BDG), galactomannan, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), and computed tomography (CT) scans (sinus, chest, and abdomen/pelvis) may help determine a diagnosis in this population. METHODS: In a retrospective cohort study of all cancer/stem cell transplant patients (diagnosed 2005-2019) from one pediatric hospital, all episodes with prolonged febrile neutropenia or IFD evaluations (defined as sending a fungal biomarker or performing a CT scan to assess for infection) were identified...

This study aimed at establishing the prebiotic potential of a commercial beta-glucan on the in vitro colonic microbiota of a child with CF compared to a healthy counterpart (H). METHODS: A dynamic simulator of colonic fermentation (twin-SHIME® model) was set up including the simulation of the proximal (PC) and distal colon (DC) of the CF and the H subjects by colonizing the bioreactors with faecal microbiota...

The additive role of non-culture-based methods for the diagnosis of candidemia remains unknown. We evaluated 2 clinical practices followed in our hospitals for the diagnosis of candidemia, namely practice#1 including a combination of blood cultures and T2Candida, and practice#2 that also included Beta-D-glucan (BDG). Three out of 96 patients testing positive with practice#1 received a complete antifungal course. Of the 120 patients evaluated with practice#2, 29 were positive. BACKGROUND: Intra-abdominal candidiasis (IAC) is difficult to predict in critically ill patients with intra-abdominal infection, leading to the overuse of antifungal treatments. Serum and peritoneal 1.3-beta-D-glucan (sBDG and pBDG) have been proposed to confirm or invalidate the diagnosis of IAC, but clinical studies have reported inconsistent results, notably because of heterogeneous populations with a low IAC prevalence. This study aimed to identify a high-risk IAC population and evaluate pBDG and sBDG in diagnosing IAC...

The beta-1,3-glucan recognition protein (BGRP) is an important pattern recognition protein (PRP), which plays an important role in immune recognition and signaling pathway of insect innate immunity. Herein, a BGRP gene was obtained from the transcriptome of Grapholita molesta and its expression was verified by PCR. The full cDNA of the GmBGRP gene was 1691 bp encoding 486 amino acid residues. The calculated molecular mass of the mature protein was 54.83 kDa with an estimated pI of 6.14. The amino acid sequence of GmBGRP was highly homologous to BGRPs of other lepidopterans including Leguminivora glycinivorella BGRP-3...

OBJECTIVE: Droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) is a novel assay to detect pneumocystis jjrovecii (Pj) which has been defined to be more sensitive than qPCR in recent studies. We aimed to explore whether clinical features of pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) were associated with ddPCR copy numbers of Pj. METHODS: A total of 48 PCP patients were retrospectively included. Pj detection was implemented by ddPCR assay within 4 h. New antifungal agents are needed to overcome limitations of available ones such as poor pharmacokinetic traits, toxicity, drug-drug interactions, limited clinical efficacy, and emerging antifungal resistance. New antifungal drugs belong to well-known families (azoles, polyenes, or beta-d-glucan synthase inhibitors) or to drug families showing completely new mechanisms of action. Some drugs have a head start in terms of potential to reach the clinical setting and are here reviewed.

Using DFA and FA, the BDG levels of 57 serum samples from case and control groups were determined.
