Multifocal papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs) are common and the majority of the tumors harbor mutual BRAF p.V600E mutation. This study aimed to investigate a contemporary series of multifocal PTCs with discordant molecular drivers. Consecutive thyroidectomies diagnosed with multifocal PTCs ≥0.5 cm between 2019 and 2023 were reviewed. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) for BRAF VE1 was performed for all tumors. Cases with discordant BRAF IHC results or morphologic discrepancy were identified, and BRAF IHC-negative tumors were subjected to RAS Q61R IHC and/or targeted RNA next-generation sequencing...

OBJECTIVE: Lymph node metastasis in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has become an area of great interest in the study of thyroid diseases. The aim of this study was to elucidate the research trends and impact of lymph node metastasis of PTC in the study of thyroid diseases through a comprehensive bibliometric analysis. METHODS: We conducted an extensive bibliometric review of the literature on lymph node metastasis in PTC using the Web of Science Core Database (WOSCC), which included approximately 3292 publications from 2012 to 2022...

Most papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) patients have a good prognosis, but lymph node metastasis (LNM) is the most common progressive manifestation and often leads to a poor-prognosis. However, few studies focused on the underlying mechanisms of LNM. This study aimed to identity the potential role of exosomal circRNAs that contribute to LNM in PTC. We found that 9000 aberrantly expressed exosomal circRNAs in PTC patients with LNM, including 684 observably upregulation and 2193 notably downregulation. Functional enrichment analyses indicated that these aberrantly expressed circRNAs were mainly enriched in a variety of molecules and signaling pathways related to the progression and LNM of PTC...

BACKGROUND: For medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) with no positive findings in the lateral neck before surgery, whether prophylactic lateral neck dissection (LND) is needed remains controversial. A better way to predict occult metastasis in the lateral neck is needed. METHODS: From January 2010 to January 2022, patients who were diagnosed with MTC and underwent primary surgery at our hospital were retrospectively reviewed. We collected the patients' baseline characteristics, surgical procedure, and rescored the ultrasound images of the primary lesions using American College of Radiology (ACR) Thyroid Imaging, Reporting and Data System (TI-RADS)...

PURPOSE: The incidence of thyroid cancer is growing fast and surgery is the most significant treatment of it. For patients with unilateral cN0 papillary thyroid cancer whether to dissect contralateral central lymph node is still under debating. Here, we aim to provide a machine learning based prediction model of contralateral central lymph node metastasis using demographic and clinical data. METHODS: 2225 patients with unilateral cN0 papillary thyroid cancer from Wuhan Union Hospital were retrospectively studied...

PURPOSE: Thyroid cancer is one of a set of extrahepatic cancers that closely linked to metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). However, the connection between MAFLD and the characteristics of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) remains unexplored. METHODS: Between Jan 2020 and Oct 2022, surgical cases of PTC patients were examined at the first Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University. Clinical data extracted from the electronic medical system underwent a rigorous comparison between two groups, classified based on MAFLD criteria, using logistic regression analysis...

Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) comprises less than 5% of thyroid cancers but is responsible for over 10% of deaths related to thyroid cancer. Regional lymph node metastasis is common and associated with mortality, thus total thyroidectomy with central compartment lymph node dissection is the standard surgical treatment for MTC. In this best practice submission, we aim to review the existing literature and determine whether calcitonin levels can serve as a reliable method for risk-stratifying MTC without overt lymph node involvement...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Intrathyroid thymic carcinoma (ITC) is a malignant epithelial tumor with thymic differentiation within the thyroid gland. Its frequency is up to 0.15 % of all malignant thyroid tumors. It is frequently a low-grade tumor. The clinical status is often misleading to other more advanced tumors like cervical lymph node metastasis of nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma, undifferentiated variant, dedifferentiated carcinoma, and medullary carcinoma of the thyroid...

RATIONALE: Follicular carcinoma of thyroid is a rare pathological type of thyroid carcinoma, accounting for 4.5% of the total. At present, the main treatment methods include surgery, iodine therapy, thyroid hormone inhibitors, etc. Targeted drug therapy is very important for distant metastasis and iodine-refractory differentiated thyroid cancer. PATIENT CONCERNS: This clinical case is a 51-year-old male patient with follicular carcinoma of thyroid. DIAGNOSES: After 7 years of total thyroidectomy, multiple distant metastasis occurred to bilateral lungs, bones, multiple lymph nodes, etc...
