Cherenkov imaging is an ideal tool for real-time in vivo verification of a radiation therapy dose. Given that radiation is pulsed from a medical linear accelerator (LINAC) together with weak Cherenkov emissions, time-gated high-sensitivity imaging is required for robust measurements. Instead of using an expensive camera system with limited efficiency of detection in each pixel, a single-pixel imaging (SPI) approach that maintains promising sensitivity over the entire spectral band could be used to provide a low-cost and viable alternative...

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is characterized by loss of motor neurons due to degeneration of nerve cells within the brain and spinal cord. Early symptoms include limb weakness, twitching or muscle cramping, and slurred speech. As the disease progresses, difficulty breathing, swallowing, and paralysis can lead to death. Currently, there are no medications that cure ALS, and guidelines recommend treatments focused on symptom management. Intravenous (IV) edaravone was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017 as a treatment to slow the progression of ALS...

BACKGROUND: Buprenorphine is under scrutiny because of the development of xerostomia and caries. The purpose of this article was to inform dental care professionals about the oral effects of buprenorphine and to increase knowledge and awareness of medication-assisted treatment in the management of opioid use disorder (OUD). CASE DESCRIPTION: In 2022, the US Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about xerostomia and caries associated with the use of transmucosal (sublingual and buccal formulations) buprenorphine...

Dinitrotoluene sulfonates (DNTSes) are highly toxic hazards regulated by the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) in the United States. The trinitrotoluene (TNT) red water formed during the TNT purification process consists mainly of DNTSes. Certain plants, including switchgrass, reed and alfalfa, can detoxify low concentrations of DNTS in TNT red water-contaminated soils. However, the precise mechanism by which these plants detoxify DNTS remains unknown. In order to aid in the development of phytoremediation resources with high DNTS removal rates, we identified and characterized 1-hydroxymethyl-2,4-dinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (HMDNBS) and its glycosylated product HMDNBS O-glucoside as the degradation products of 2,4-DNT-3-SO3 Na, the major isoform of DNTS in TNT red water-contaminated soils, in switchgrass via LC-MS/MS- and NMR-based metabolite analyses...

Fat crystallization is one of the predominant factors influencing the structure and properties of fat-containing emulsions. In the present study, the role of emulsifiers on fat crystallization dynamics within droplet multiphase systems was evaluated via single-droplet analysis, taking advantage of the non-destructive properties of confocal Raman microscopy. Palm oil droplets dispersed in water were used as a model system, due to palm oil's well-known crystallization properties. Emulsion droplets of the same size were generated using two different emulsifiers (Whey Protein Isolate and Tween 60), at various concentrations...

OBJECTIVE: Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a fatal disease and a clinical challenge, as few effective treatment modalities are available. Previous evidence links the gut microbiome to the host immunoreactivity to tumors. We thus evaluated the impact of a novel microbiome modulator compound (MMC) on the gut microbiota composition, tumor immune microenvironment, and cancer control in a model of malignant pleural mesothelioma. METHODS: Age- and weight-matched immunocompetent (n = 23) or athymic BALB/c mice (n = 15) were randomly assigned to MMC or no treatment (control) groups...

The corrosion of metals is still a huge challenge for various industries, and the pursuit of effective treatments ensures environmental sustainability. In this study, we utilized Chiquita banana sap-water extract (BSWE) to prevent mild steel from electrochemical corrosion in a 0.1 M HCl at room temperature. Corrosion resistance was assessed using various electrochemical methodologies, combining with surface characterization techniques. The results showed a high level of effectiveness when the corrosion current density decreased from 3292...

BACKGROUND: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most frequent and debilitating conditions leading to gastroenterological referrals. However, recommended treatments remain limited, yielding only limited therapeutic gains. Chitin-glucan (CG) is a novel dietary prebiotic classically used in humans at a dosage of 1.5-3.0 g/d and is considered a safe food ingredient by the European Food Safety Authority. To provide an alternative approach to managing patients with IBS, we performed preclinical molecular, cellular, and animal studies to evaluate the role of chitin-glucan in the main pathophysiological mechanisms involved in IBS...

Parasites represent a ubiquitous threat for most organisms, requiring potential hosts to invest in a range of strategies to defend against infection-these include both behavioural and physiological mechanisms. Avoidance is an essential first line of defence, but this behaviour may show a trade-off with host investment in physiological immunity. Importantly, while environmental stressors can lead to elevated hormones in vertebrates, such as glucocorticoids, that can reduce physiological immunity in certain contexts, behavioural defences may also be compromised...

Aiming at the acid mine drainage (AMD) in zinc, copper and other heavy metals treatment difficulties, severe pollution of soil and water environment and other problems. Through the ultrasonic precipitation method, this study prepared fly ash-loaded nano-FeS composites (nFeS-F). The effects of nFeS-F dosage, pH, stirring rate, reaction time and initial concentration of the solution on the adsorption of Zn(II) and Cu(II) were investigated. The data were fitted by Lagergren first and second-order kinetic equations, Internal diffusion equation, Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, and combined with SEM, TEM, FTIR, TGA, and XPS assays to reveal the mechanism of nFeS-F adsorption of Zn(II) and Cu(II)...
