Despite many recent studies on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) therapeutics, the optimal treatment has yet to be determined. In this unfinished project, we combined secondary metabolites (SMs) from the gut microbiota (GM) and Hordeum vulgare (HV) to investigate their combinatorial effects via network pharmacology (NP). Additionally, we analyzed GM or barley - signalling pathways - targets - metabolites (GBSTMs) in combinatorial perspectives (HV, and GM). A total of 31 key targets were analysed via a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, and JUN was identified as the uppermost target in NAFLD...

This study explores the dynamical rotary motion of a charged axisymmetric spinning rigid body (RB) under the effect of a gyrostatic moment (GM). The influence of transverse and invariable body fixed torques (IBFTs), and an electromagnetic force field, is also considered. Euler's equations of motion (EOM) are utilized to derive the regulating system of motion for the problem in a suitable formulation. Due to the lack of torque exerted along the spin axis and the nearly symmetrical nature of the RB, the spin rate is nearly unchanged...

BACKGROUND: Access to health care remains suboptimal in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and continues to hinder survival in early childhood. We systematically assessed the association between problems accessing health care (PAHC) and under-five mortality (U5M). METHODS: Child mortality data on 724 335 livebirths came from the latest Demographic and Health Surveys of 50 LMICs (2013-2021). Reasons for PAHC were classified into three domains: 'money needed for treatment' (economic), 'distance to health facility' (physical), 'getting permission' or 'not wanting to go alone' (socio-cultural)...

This review deals with the developmental origins of extraocular, jaw and laryngeal muscles, the expression, regulation and functional significance of sarcomeric myosin heavy chains (MyHCs) that they express and changes in MyHC expression during phylogeny. Myogenic progenitors from the mesoderm in the prechordal plate and branchial arches specify craniofacial muscle allotypes with different repertoires for MyHC expression. To cope with very complex eye movements, extraocular muscles (EOMs) express 11 MyHCs, ranging from the superfast extraocular MyHC to the slowest, non-muscle MyHC IIB (nmMyH IIB)...

Pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block and periarticular injection (PAI) provide motor-sparing analgesia following hip surgery. We hypothesized that PAI offers non-inferior pain relief compared with PENG block in patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). In this randomized trial, 66 patients who underwent primary THA under spinal anesthesia were assigned to the PENG or PAI groups. The primary endpoint was the resting pain score 24 h postoperatively. The secondary endpoints included pain scores at rest and during movement at 6 and 48 h postoperatively, quadriceps strength at 24 h postoperatively, and opioid consumption at 24 and 48 h postoperatively...

Lentil is a leguminous crop with a high content of health-beneficial polyphenols. Lentil sprouts are popularly consumed in fresh vegetable markets, although their phytochemical qualities are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the accumulation of phenolics in lentil sprouts in response to photosynthetic and stress light qualities, including fluorescent light (FL), red LED (RL), blue LED (BL), ultraviolet A (UV-A), and ultraviolet B (UV-B). Three lentil cultivars, Lentil Green (LG), French Green (FG), and Lentil Red (LR), were used to evaluate sprouts grown under each light condition...

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neuromuscular disorder characterized by progressive weakness of almost all skeletal muscles, whereas extraocular muscles (EOMs) are comparatively spared. While hindlimb and diaphragm muscles of end-stage SOD1G93A (G93A) mice (a familial ALS mouse model) exhibit severe denervation and depletion of Pax7+ satellite cells (SCs), we found that the pool of SCs and the integrity of neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) are maintained in EOMs. In cell sorting profiles, SCs derived from hindlimb and diaphragm muscles of G93A mice exhibit denervation-related activation, whereas SCs from EOMs of G93A mice display spontaneous (non-denervation-related) activation, similar to SCs from wild-type mice...

In an effort to expand the existing QUEST database of accurate vertical transition energies [Véril et al. WIREs Comput. Mol. Sci. 2021, 11, e1517], we have modeled more than 100 electronic excited states of different natures (local, charge-transfer, Rydberg, singlet, and triplet) in a dozen of mono- and di-substituted benzenes, including aniline, benzonitrile, chlorobenzene, fluorobenzene, nitrobenzene, among others. To establish theoretical best estimates for these vertical excitation energies, we have employed advanced coupled-cluster methods including iterative triples (CC3 and CCSDT) and, when technically possible, iterative quadruples (CC4)...

In an era where the established lines between cell identities are blurred by intra-lineage plasticity, distinguishing between stable and transitional states becomes imperative. This challenge is particularly pronounced within the Group 1 ILC lineage, where the similarity and plasticity between NK cells and ILC1s obscure their classification and the assignment of their unique contributions to immune regulation. This study exploits the unique property of Asialo-GM1 (AsGM1)-a membrane lipid associated with cytotoxic attributes absent in ILC1s-as a definitive criterion to distinguish between these cells...

Exhausted CD8 T cells (TEX ) are associated with worse outcome in cancer yet better outcome in autoimmunity. Building on our past findings of increased TIGIT+ KLRG1+ TEX with teplizumab therapy in type 1 diabetes (T1D), in the absence of treatment we found that the frequency of TIGIT+ KLRG1+ TEX is stable within an individual but differs across individuals in both T1D and healthy control (HC) cohorts. This TIGIT+ KLRG1+ CD8 TEX population shares an exhaustion-associated EOMES gene signature in HC, T1D, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and cancer subjects, expresses multiple inhibitory receptors, and is hyporesponsive in vitro , together suggesting co-expression of TIGIT and KLRG1 may broadly define human peripheral exhausted cells...

External ventricular drain (EVD) is a common, yet challenging neurosurgical procedure of placing a catheter into the brain ventricular system that requires prolonged training for surgeons to improve the catheter placement accuracy. In this paper, we introduce NeuroLens, an Augmented Reality (AR) system that provides neurosurgeons with guidance that aides them in completing an EVD catheter placement. NeuroLens builds on prior work in AR-assisted EVD to present a registered hologram of a patient's ventricles to the surgeons, and uniquely incorporates guidance on the EVD catheter's trajectory, angle of insertion, and distance to the target...
