INTRODUCTION: Agricultural aircraft operations are associated with unique challenges. In particular, these include maintaining awareness of obstacles associated with flight at very low altitudes. Wire strikes are a common cause of accidents in these operations. METHODS: Focus groups were completed during the 2022 Ag Aviation Expo hosted by the National Agricultural Aviation Association with pilots who had experienced wire-strike events ( N = 22). The researchers coded the transcripts using a human factors framework...

The balloon trapping technique is frequently used during percutaneous coronary intervention, which is a common treatment for ischemic heart disease. A 68-year-old man with induced ischemia, stenotic lesions, and arterial calcifications underwent catheterization of the circumflex artery and debulking of lesions. During the removal of the catheter, the tip of the balloon catheter used in the procedure dislodged and entered the circumflex artery. After successfully retrieving the catheter, we conducted a bench test of the balloon catheter to determine the cause of the tear...

Pressure drifting is a troublesome error in invasive coronary function tests. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between prolonged and short-time pressure equalizations in pressure drifting. Pressure drifting was defined as the pressure gradient between the mean pressure of the distal wire sensor (Pd) and aortic pressure (Pa) when the wire was withdrawn to the tip of the guiding catheter. Significant drifts 1 and 2 were defined as the absolute values of pressure gradients > 2 and > 3 mmHg, respectively...

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a multifaceted syndrome that includes maternal vascular dysfunction. We hypothesize that increased placental glycolysis and hypoxia in preeclampsia lead to increased levels of methylglyoxal (MGO), consequently causing vascular dysfunction. METHODS: Plasma samples and placentas were collected from uncomplicated and preeclampsia pregnancies. Uncomplicated placentas and trophoblast cells (BeWo) were exposed to hypoxia. The reactive dicarbonyl MGO and advanced glycation end products (Nε -(carboxymethyl)lysine [CML], Nε -(carboxyethyl)lysine [CEL], and MGO-derived hydroimidazolone [MG-H]) were quantified using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry...

Currently, the main solution for braking systems for underground electric trackless rubber-tired vehicles (UETRVs) is traditional hydraulic braking systems, which have the disadvantages of hydraulic pressure crawling, the risk of oil leakage and a high maintenance cost. An electro-mechanical-braking (EMB) system, as a type of novel brake-by-wire (BBW) system, can eliminate the above shortcomings and play a significant role in enhancing the intelligence level of the braking system in order to meet the motion control requirements of unmanned UETRVs...

BACKGROUND: Vessel-level physiological data derived from pressure wire measurements are one of the important determinant factors in the optimal revascularisation strategy for patients with multivessel disease (MVD). However, these may result in complications and a prolonged procedure time. AIMS: The feasibility of using the quantitative flow ratio (QFR), an angiography-derived fractional flow reserve (FFR), in Heart Team discussions to determine the optimal revascularisation strategy for patients with MVD was investigated...

A right aortic arch (RAA) is an extremely rare congenital anomaly with seven identified variants. While most variants are asymptomatic, those with a vascular ring can be associated with severe symptoms. We present an incidental RAA finding during left heart catheterization (LHC) in a 68-year-old female with multiple morbidities presented with worsening angina. Her echocardiogram was significant for inferolateral wall akinesia, prompting LHC. The procedure was challenging with an unexpected course of the guide wire distally behind the cardiac shadow...

Decades of measurements of the thermophysical properties of hot metals show that pulsed Joule heating is an effective method to heat solid and liquid metals that are chemically reactive or difficult to contain. To extend such measurements to hundreds of GPa pressure, pulsed heating methods have recently been integrated with diamond anvil cells. The recent design used a low-side switch and active electrical sensing equipment that was prone to damage and measurement error. Here, we report the design and characterization of new electronics that use a high-side switch and robust, passive electrical sensing equipment...

Objectives. This study investigated the influence of higher pressure protection with a small diameter balloon of side branch (SB) on bifurcation lesions. Background. Of the different coronary stent implantation techniques, the modified jailed balloon technique has become a viable option for bifurcation lesions. However, there was no detailed study on the relationship between the balloon inflation pressure of the main vessel (MV) and SB. Methods. In this study, we collected information of patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for bifurcated lesions between March 2019 and December 2022...

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is classified as group IV pulmonary hypertension, characterized by thrombotic occlusion of the pulmonary arteries leading to vascular stenosis or obstruction, progressive increase in pulmonary vascular resistance and pulmonary arterial pressure, and eventual right heart failure. Unlike other types of pulmonary hypertension, the prognosis of CTEPH can be significantly improved by surgery, vascular intervention, and/or targeted drug therapy. Pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) is the preferred treatment of choice for CTEPH...

BACKGROUND: The heart can metabolize the microbiota-derived short-chain fatty acid butyrate. Butyrate may have beneficial effects in heart failure, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. We tested the hypothesis that butyrate elevates cardiac output by mechanisms involving direct stimulation of cardiac contractility and vasorelaxation in rats. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined the effects of butyrate on (1) in vivo hemodynamics using parallel echocardiographic and invasive blood pressure measurements, (2) isolated perfused hearts in Langendorff systems under physiological conditions and after ischemia and reperfusion, and (3) isolated coronary arteries mounted in isometric wire myographs...

Modern aircraft are being equipped with high-voltage and direct current (HVDC) architectures to address the increase in electrical power. Unfortunately, the rise of voltage in low pressure environments brings about a problem with unexpected ionisation phenomena such as arcing. Series arcs in HVDC cannot be detected with conventional means, and finding methods to avoid the potentially catastrophic hazards of these events becomes critical to assure further development of more electric and all electric aviation...

BACKGROUND: Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are composed of nDNA, enzymes, and citrullinated histones that are expelled by neutrophils in the process of NETosis. NETs accumulate in the aorta and kidneys in hypertension. PAD4 (protein-arginine deiminase-4) is a calcium-dependent enzyme that is essential for NETosis. TRPV4 (transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 4) is a mechanosensitive calcium channel expressed in neutrophils. Thus, we hypothesize that NETosis contributes to hypertension via NET-mediated endothelial cell (EC) dysfunction...

Visualization of training effectiveness is critical to patients' confidence and eventual rehabilitation. Here, an innovative magnetoinductive pressure sensor is proposed for monitoring hand rehabilitation in stroke hemiplegic patients. It couples the giant magneto and stress-impedance effects of a square spiral amorphous wire with the giant magnetoelastic effect of a polymer magnet (NdFeB@PDMS). The addition of the magnetoelastic layer results in a sensitivity improvement of 178%, a wide sensing range (up to 1 MPa), fast response/recovery times (40 ms), and excellent mechanical robustness (over 15 000 cycles)...

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy and it is the main cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the only modifiable one and trabeculectomy is commonly considered the surgical "gold standard" to decrease IOP. In particular cases, other kind of surgeries, as the Ahmed Glaucoma Valve (AGV) implant, are a reliable alternative. Usually, the silicone tube of AGV surgery is inserted into the anterior chamber. Sometimes it is necessary to place the AGV silicone tube in the ciliary sulcus, especially in cases of endothelial decompensation...
