Infective endocarditis (IE) is a life-threatening condition, and early diagnosis and management are critical. There is emerging evidence on the role of advanced imaging modalities including dedicated cardiac computed tomography (CCT), and 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET). The updated 2023 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines have emphasized increased utilization of multimodality imaging in the diagnosis and management of IE. In this review, we elaborate on recent recommendations from the updated 2023 ESC guidelines, with comparisons to the current American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines, focusing on multimodality imaging in IE...

The operational efficacy of lane departure warning systems (LDWS) in autonomous vehicles is critically influenced by the retro-reflectivity of road markings, which varies with environmental wear and weather conditions. This study investigated how changes in road marking retro-reflectivity, due to factors such as weather and physical wear, impact the performance of LDWS. The study was conducted at the Yeoncheon SOC Demonstration Research Center, where various weather scenarios, including rainfall and transitions between day and night lighting, were simulated...

BACKGROUND: Statins are a cost-effective therapy for prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Guidelines on statins for primary prevention are unclear for older adults (>75 years). OBJECTIVE: Investigate statin utility in older adults without ASCVD events, by risk stratifying in a large healthcare network. METHODS: We included 8,114 older adults, without CAD, PVD or ischemic stroke. Statin utilization based on ACC/AHA 10-year ASCVD risk calculation, was evaluated in intermediate (7...

Heart failure, a growing concern in the United States, significantly impacts both morbidity and mortality. Classified by ejection fraction, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) now accounts for half of all cases and is steadily rising. Unlike its counterpart, heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), HFpEF lacks clear management guidelines. Recognizing this critical gap, we aim to review existing recommendations and formulate effective management strategies for HFpEF.

BACKGROUND: Uncontrolled hypertension (HTN) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. The prevalence of HTN in the Ethiopian adult population is almost 20%.This study aimed to determine the prevalence of uncontrolled HTN and its contributing factors among patients with HTN in Ethiopia undergoing treatment. METHODS: Electronic bibliographic databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Hinari (Research4Life), Embase, and Scopus were searched for original records in the English language that assessed HTN control in Ethiopia and were available before 29 June 2023...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect with prevalence of 0.8%. Thanks to tremendous progress in medical and surgical practice, nowadays, >90% of children survive into adulthood. Recently European Society of Cardiology (ESC), American College of Cardiology (ACC)/ American Heart Association (AHA) issued guidelines which offer diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations for the different defect categories. However, the type of technical exams and their frequency of follow-up may vary largely between clinicians and centres...

Noteworthy in Cardiothoracic Surgery 2023 summarizes a few of the most high-impact trials and provocative trends in cardiothoracic surgery and transplantation this past year. Transplantation using organs procured from donation after circulatory death (DCD) continues to increase, and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons released recommendations on best practices in 2023. We review a summary of data on the impact of DCD on heart and lung transplantation. There has been increased interest in extracorporeal life support (ECLS), particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic, and we review the results of the highly discussed ECLS-SHOCK trial, which randomized patients in cardiogenic shock with planned revascularization to ECLS vs usual care...

BACKGROUND: Stimulant-related overdoses have increased dramatically, with almost 50% of overdoses in the United States now involving stimulants. Additionally, harm-reduction approaches are increasingly seen as key to reducing the negative impact of substance use. Contingency management (CM), the provision of financial incentives for abstinence, is the most effective treatment for stimulant use disorder, but historically has not been widely implemented. Many recent, large-scale implementation efforts have relied upon foundational CM protocols that may not sufficiently account for recent increases in the prevalence and lethality of stimulant use nor the growing preference for harm reduction versus abstinence-only frameworks...

Breastfeeding is a fundamental and biologically normal function with well-established benefits for both lactating parents and infants. Despite these benefits, physicians, particularly those in training, often face significant obstacles when attempting to meet their breastfeeding and pumping goals. In response to these challenges, the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) and a diverse group of health care professionals have come together to advocate for comprehensive lactation support policies in medical learning environments and workplaces...

The New Dunedin Hospital (NDH) is New Zealand's largest health infrastructure build. Here we describe the use of a simple simulation-based hospital design exercise to inform the appropriate lift car size for critical care intrahospital transfers in the NDH. The intensive care unit (ICU) user group tested a series of entries and exits of simulated complex patient transfers in mocked-up lift cars of three different dimensions. Time taken to enter and exit the lift were recorded, reflecting the relative difficulty of transfer...

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) of the vulva represents a highly uncommon type of female malignancy. Due to the absence of specific treatment guidelines, such cases are typically managed by the treatment protocols for vulvar cancer. Here, we report the case of a 52-year-old woman who presented with a painful right vulvar mass, leading to a diagnosis of ACC of the vulva after biopsy and immunohistochemical analysis. She underwent vulvectomy, bilateral inguinal lymphadenectomy, and targeted radiotherapy, and no evidence of recurrence has been found for three years, with ongoing monitoring for post-radiation effects...

Secondary phase precipitation in Fe-22Mn-9Al-0.6C low-density steel was investigated during a continuous cooling process with different cooling rates through a DIL805A thermal expansion dilatometer, and the changes in microstructures and hardness by different cooling rates were discussed. The results showed that the matrix of the Fe-22Mn-9Al-0.6C was composed of austenite and δ-ferrite; moreover, the secondary phases included κ-carbide, β-Mn and DO3 at room temperature. The precipitation temperatures of 858 °C, 709 °C and 495 °C corresponded to the secondary phases B2, κ-carbide and β-Mn, respectively, which were obtained from the thermal expansion curve by the tangent method...
