IMPORTANCE: Given that the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ) item 9 is commonly used to screen for risk of self-harm and suicide, it is important that clinicians recognize circumstances when at-risk adolescents may go undetected. OBJECTIVE: To understand characteristics of adolescents with a history of depression who do not endorse the PHQ item 9 before a near-term intentional self-harm event or suicide. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a retrospective cohort study design using electronic health record and claims data from January 2009 through September 2017...

BACKGROUND: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) for Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) no longer features in treatment guidelines. However, IVIg is still used by some clinicians for severe or recurrent CDI (rCDI) cases. The main objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of IVIg and to identify possible predictors of disease resolution post IVIg administration for patients with CDI. METHODS: This retrospective observational cohort study of patients ≥2 years old hospitalised with severe, relapsing, or rCDI treated with IVIg therapy was performed in a large UK tertiary hospital between April 2018 and March 2023...

Students are required to complete supervised practice hours prior to becoming Registered Dietitians and Physician Assistants. Research suggests that environmental and social factors affect dietetic interns' diets during their internship, although these factors have not been studied among physician assistant interns. This cross-sectional study utilized an online survey to compare dietetic interns' ( n = 81) and physician assistant interns' ( n = 79) fruit and vegetable intake, food security, barriers to healthy eating, and empowerment for making healthy dietary choices during an internship...

A retrospective analysis of 20 adult patients with histopathological and clinical diagnoses of ECD was conducted at a single institution over a twenty-year period (2002-2022). Clinical responses were compared on the basis of treatments rendered, which included chemotherapy, immunotherapy, systemic corticosteroids, surgery and radiation, or targeted agents, referring to any small molecular inhibitors. Treatment response evaluation varied by the anatomic site(s) of disease, the extent of disease at diagnosis, and the imaging modality employed...

Parasites are important component of communities in a forest ecosystem with profound effects on trophic interactions such as food web. Modification of the forest structure (e.g. changes in species composition and abundance of key species) can have a strong impact on the occurrence, diversity, and abundance of parasites, with subsequent repercussions for ecosystem functioning. In this study, we compared the occurrence and abundance of wild rodents' ectoparasites from forest sites invaded and uninvaded by an invasive tree, Maesopsis eminii in Amani Nature Forest Reserve, Tanzania...

Cervical cancer (CC) ranks fourth among women's malignancies worldwide and seriously affects women's health. HSPA5 is a heat shock protein, also known as glucose regulatory protein 78 (GRP78). Upregulation of HSPA5 has been reported to be closely associated with multiple types of tumors. However, the specific role of HSPA5 in cervical cancer has not been discovered. In our study, we explored the prognostic value of HSPA5 in CC. Here, we analyzed the (TCGA) and (UCSC) databases, the analysis of HSPA5 in many tumors types was conducted with the "wilcox...

Over the last six decades, northwest China has undergone a significant climatic shift from "warm-dry" to "warm-wet", profoundly impacting the structures and functions of lake ecosystem across the region. However, the influences of this climatic transition on the diversity patterns, co-occurrence network, and assembly processes of eukaryotic microbial communities in lake ecosystem, along with the underlying mechanisms, remain largely unexplored. To bridge this knowledge gap, our study focused on Lake Bosten, the largest inland freshwater body in China, conducting a comprehensive analysis...

Introduction The value of family health history as a means to understanding health risk has been long known. Its value in a precision medicine context is also now becoming apparent. General practitioners (GPs) are considered to play a key role in the collection, and investigation, of family health history, but it remains widely reported as being both poorly and infrequently undertaken. Little is known about this practice in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). Aim This study aimed to explore current practices in relation to the ascertainment of family health history, with a view towards precision medicine...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Establishing an accurate and timely diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is essential for appropriate management and prognostication. In some cases, surgical lung biopsy (SLB) is performed but carries non-negligible risk. The objective of this retrospective study was to determine if SLB is associated with accelerated lung function decline in patients with IPF using the Canadian Registry for Pulmonary Fibrosis. METHODS: Linear mixed models and Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to compare decline in forced vital capacity (FVC)%, diffusion capacity of the lung (DLCO%) and risk of death or lung transplantation between SLB and non-SLB patients...

INTRODUCTION: People living with the human immunodeficiency virus (PWH) have microvascular disease. Since perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) regulates microvascular function and adipose tissue is inflamed in PWH, we tested the hypothesis that PWH have inflamed PVAT that impairs the function of their small vessels. METHODS: Subcutaneous small arteries were dissected with or without (+ or -) PVAT from a gluteal skin biopsy from 11 women with treated HIV (WWH) aged < 50 years and 10 matched women without HIV and studied on isometric myographs...

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: The onset of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic increased the demand for inpatient services and led to widespread staffing shortages in the acute and post-acute setting, contributing to delayed inpatient throughput and leading to capacity crises. Novel strategies are needed to facilitate the efficient progression of hospitalized patients when medically ready for lower levels of care. The authors have developed a foundational strategic framework for patient progression to ensure capture of patient progression data, enhance efficiency, and optimal utilization of post-acute resources in increasingly complex and resource-constrained acute and post-acute environments...

On December 5, 2022, an indirect drive fusion implosion on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) achieved a target gain G_{target} of 1.5. This is the first laboratory demonstration of exceeding "scientific breakeven" (or G_{target}>1) where 2.05 MJ of 351 nm laser light produced 3.1 MJ of total fusion yield, a result which significantly exceeds the Lawson criterion for fusion ignition as reported in a previous NIF implosion [H. Abu-Shawareb et al. (Indirect Drive ICF Collaboration), Phys...

The dynamic orientation of total hip replacement acetabular cups during walking may vary substantially from their assumed position at surgical implantation and may vary between individuals. The scale of this effect is of interest for both pre-clinical device testing and for pre-operative surgical planning. This work aimed to evaluate (1) patient variation in dynamic cup orientation; (2) whether walking speed was a candidate proxy measure for the dynamic cup orientation; and (3) the relationships between dynamic cup orientation angles and planar pelvic angles...
