β-lactoglobulin (BLG) is the major whey protein with negative charges at neutral pH in aqueous media. Thus, the interaction with mucins, the major polyanionic component of mucus, is very weak due to the electrostatic repulsion between them. The present study postulates that cationization of BLG molecules may reverse the interaction characteristics between BLG and mucin from repulsive to associative. To this end, cationic-modified BLGs were prepared by grafting positively charged ethylenediamine (EDA) moieties into the negatively charged carboxyl groups on the aspartic and glutamic acid residues and compared with non-modified BLG upon mixing with porcine gastric mucin (PGM)...

Mueller-Weiss Syndrome (MWS), characterized by spontaneous adult-onset tarsal navicular osteonecrosis, is an uncommon cause of chronic midfoot pain that can lead to functional impairment and progressive deformities. This study aimed to present clinical and radiological outcomes of talonavicular-cuneiform (TNC) arthrodesis in the treatment of patients with MWS. A retrospective study was performed on 8 consecutive patients (6 female, 2 male; mean age = 50 years; range = 33-64) who underwent TNC arthrodesis using plate fixation with autologous bone grafting for the treatment of MWS...

In this study, we report the modification of flexible copper films via the spontaneous reduction of aryldiazonium gold salts [X-4-C6 H4 N≡N]AuCl4 (X═COOH, NO2 ). The electroless modification involves dipping of flexible copper films in the aryldiazonium gold solutions for a few seconds, under ambient conditions, followed by a washing step with deionized water to obtain a mechanically robust gold-aryl coating. The chemical composition, morphology, electronic structure, and optical properties of the gold-aryl layer and the flexibility of the modified copper films are supported by the results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electrochemistry, contact angle, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS)...

HLA-mismatched transplants with either in vitro depletion of CD3+TCRαβ/CD19 (TCRαβ) cells or in vivo T-cell depletion using post-transplant cyclophosphamide (PTCY) have been increasingly used for patients with inborn errors of immunity (IEI). We performed a retrospective multicenter study via the EBMT registry on 306 children with IEI undergoing first transplant between 2010-2019 from an HLA-mismatched donor using TCRαβ (n=167) or PTCY (n=139). Median age at HSCT was 1.2 years (range, 0...

Opioid use is extremely prevalent among cirrhosis and liver transplant (LT) patients, despite concerns regarding opioid-related risks in this population. While there are many theoretical risks of opioids in patients with hepatic dysfunction, there is limited evidence on the effect of opioid use on clinical outcomes in cirrhosis and pre- and post-LT patients specifically. As a result there is significant center-level variability in opioid-related practice and policies. The existing data-largely based on retrospective observational studies-does suggest that opioids are associated with increased health resource utilization pre- and post-LT, and that they may precipitate hepatic encephalopathy (HE) in patients with cirrhosis and increase risk of graft loss and death post-LT...

CASE: A 22-year-old man and a 14-year-old adolescent boy, who exhibited moderate general joint laxity, experienced recurrent sternoclavicular joint instability without traumatic events. The patients were successfully treated with extra-articular stabilization using autologous tendon grafts without surgical exposure of the sternoclavicular joint. CONCLUSION: Atraumatic instability of the sternoclavicular joint is rare but often results in recurrent instability accompanied by discomfort, pain, and limitations in activities...

Chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) remains a significant problem for patients after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplants (allo-HSCT). While in vivo lymphodepletion by antibodies for cGVHD prophylaxis has been explored in the myeloablative setting, its effects after reduced intensity conditioning (RIC) are not well described. PURPOSE: In pediatric population, large soft tissue defects occur in avulsion injuries. In addition to the challenges of primary surgical therapy, elasticity, appearance and function of the scar in children are of crucial importance, especially in the context of body growth. So far various flaps, plasties, skin grafts and dermal substitutes have become established, although infections and skin shrinkage remain challenging. In 2020, a new skin substitute material-NovoSorb® Biodegradable Temporizing Matrix (BTM)-was introduced in Europe for temporary wound closure and tissue regeneration...

As transient electronics continue to advance, the demand for new materials has given rise to the exploration of conducting polymer (CP)-based electronic materials. The big challenge lies in balancing conductivity while introducing controlled degradable properties into CP-based transient materials. In response to this, we present in this work a concept of using conducting polymers attached to an enzymatically biodegradable biopolymer to create transient polymer electronics materials. Specifically, poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (P3HT) is covalently grafted onto biopolymer gelatin, affording graft copolymer gelatin- graft -poly(3-hexyl thiophene) (termed Gel- g -P3HT)...
