BACKGROUND: Much of the literature on harm and injustice in medical education focuses on the impact of oppression rather than trainees' efforts to create change. To acknowledge and make visible these efforts, medical education professionals must grasp how trainees perceive resistance and their role in effecting change. Employing functional linguistic and 'everyday' resistance theories, this critical qualitative study aims to understand trainees' conceptions of resistance practices and their representational choices in moments when they talked about and conceptualised resistance...

BACKGROUND: Medical trainees (medical students, residents, and fellows) are playing an active role in the development of new curricular initiatives; however, examinations of their advocacy efforts are rarely reported. The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of trainees advocating for improved medical education on the care of people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. METHODS: In 2022-23, the authors conducted an explanatory, sequential, mixed methods study using a constructivist paradigm to analyze the experiences of trainee advocates...

BACKGROUND: Assisted death, including euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (PAS), is under debate worldwide, and these practices are adopted in many Western countries. Physicians' attitudes toward assisted death vary across the globe, but little is known about physicians' actual reactions when facing a request for assisted death. There is a clear gap in evidence on how physicians act and respond to patients' requests for assisted death in countries where these actions are not legal...

BACKGROUND: The pursuit of medical and dental education is challenging and can affect the overall quality of life of medical students. Assessing the quality of life of medical students is the first step in the preparation of efficient future health care professionals. This study used the World Health Organization Quality of Life Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF) to evaluate the quality of life of medical and dental students in Karachi, Pakistan. OBJECTIVES: The study objectives include: assessing the QoL of medical and dental students and their general health satisfaction and self-satisfaction...

BACKGROUND: Effective teaching methods are needed to improve students' abilities in hand-eye coordination and understanding of cardiac anatomy in echocardiography education. Simulation devices have emerged as innovative teaching tools and exhibited distinctive advantages due to their ability to provide vivid and visual learning experiences. This study aimed to investigate the effect of simulation of sectional human anatomy using ultrasound on students' learning outcomes and satisfaction in echocardiography education...

INTRODUCTION: People with substance use disorder (SUD) deal with stigmatization in various areas of life, including healthcare system. In this study, we investigated the attitudes of final-year medical students towards SUD people and attempted to understand their influence. METHODS: We conducted a two-stage cluster analysis (hierarchical ascending classification followed by K-means clustering) based on the "beSAAS". We administrated this 23-item questionnaire to 923 final-year medical students in Belgium (response rate = 71,1%)...

INTRODUCTION: Diversity in medicine has a positive effect on outcomes, especially for Asian patients. We sought to evaluate representation of Asians across entry and leadership levels in surgical training. METHODS: Publicly accessible population data from 2018 to 2023 were collected from the US Census Bureau, the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the American Board of Surgery (ABS). Frequencies based on self-identified Asian status were identified, and proportions were calculated...

As point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is increasingly being used in clinical settings, ultrasound education is expanding into student curricula. We aimed to determine the status and awareness of POCUS education in Korean medical schools using a nationwide cross-sectional survey. In October 2021, a survey questionnaire consisting of 20 questions was distributed via e-mail to professors in the emergency medicine (EM) departments of Korean medical schools. The questionnaire encompassed 19 multiple-choice questions covering demographics, current education, perceptions, and barriers, and the final question was an open-ended inquiry seeking suggestions for POCUS education...

INTRODUCTION: Disparities in early orthopaedic experiences among medical students prompt a critical examination of factors influencing the availability and nature of these exposures. While the current body of literature underscores the significance of early surgical exposure and mentorship in medical education, a notable gap exists in investigating early orthopaedic exposure and its specific impact on students from diverse backgrounds. METHODS: A 16-item questionnaire, approved by our institutional review board, was administered to fourth-year medical students (MS4) and first-year orthopaedic residents (PGY-1) across U...

Anatomy education in the medical school curriculum has encountered considerable challenges during the last decade. The exponential growth of medical science has necessitated a review of the classical ways to teach anatomy to shorten the time students spend dissecting, allowing them to acquire critical, new knowledge in other disciplines. Augmented and mixed reality technologies have developed tremendously during the last few years, offering a wide variety of possibilities to deliver anatomy education to medical students...

Angola, a country grappling with prevalent tropical diseases such as malaria, is witnessing an alarming rise in cancer-related deaths. Despite the escalating significance of cancer globally and in Angola, the nation's medical schools lack compulsory oncology disciplines in their curricula. This absence compromises the comprehensive training of medical students, preventing the development of integrated perspectives and skills crucial for addressing the growing cancer burden. This article, authored by the Angolan Oncology Research Group (AORG), proposes an oncology program for undergraduate medical students in Angola, aiming to bridge the educational gap...

A sample size of 200 male and female students resident in the campus hostels were selected using random sampling technique. A self-structured questionnaire was designed and administered to the study participants, however, only 148 copies of the questionnaires were successfully retrieved and used for the study...

Organizations and their practices contribute to the marginalization of transgender and gender diverse (TGD) populations by rewarding gender normativity and punishing gender transgression. The present study draws on data gleaned from four focus groups completed in 2023 with a total of 19 participants to explore TGD U.S. medical students' perceptions of TGD content inclusion in their medical school curricula. Using abductive analysis, I argue that curricular oversights which omit socio-political contexts regarding TGD health and healthcare, as well as continued pathologization of TGD communities and people, contribute to a hostile learning environment for TGD medical students and residents...

PURPOSE: Research on the impostor phenomenon (IP) is rapidly growing in medical education due to its relationship with distress and burnout. How IP is theoretically conceptualized and analyzed has been inconsistent, however, which limits our understanding of results and how to act on them. BACKGROUND: Women pursuing a career in surgery or related disciplines are still in the minority, despite the fact that women compose at least half of the medical student population in most Western countries. Thus, recruiting and retaining female surgeons remains an important challenge to meet the need for surgeons and increase the quality of care. The participations were female medical students between their third and fifth academic year. In this study, we applied the well-established psychological theory of planned behavior (TPB) which suggests that the intention to perform a behavior (e...
