IMPORTANCE: Approximately 55 million people in the US and approximately 1.1 billion people worldwide are postmenopausal women. To inform clinical practice about the health effects of menopausal hormone therapy, calcium plus vitamin D supplementation, and a low-fat dietary pattern, the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) enrolled 161 808 postmenopausal US women (N = 68 132 in the clinical trials) aged 50 to 79 years at baseline from 1993 to 1998, and followed them up for up to 20 years...

Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, which leads to bone fragility (ie, weakness) and an increased risk for fracture. The current standard for assessing bone health and diagnosing osteoporosis is DXA, which quantifies areal BMD, typically at the hip and spine. However, DXA-derived BMD assesses only one component of bone health and is notably limited in evaluating the bone strength, a critical factor in fracture resistance. Although multifrequency vibration analysis can quickly and painlessly assay bone strength, there has been limited success in advancing a device of this nature...

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer (CC) is a leading cause of mortality in women around the world, with the highest incidence rate still being in developing countries. The most common aetiological factor is infection with high-risk human papilloma virus viral strains. Oxidative stress through generation of reactive oxygen species leads to lipid peroxidation and DNA damage. Studies show that reactive lipid electrophiles such as 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) produced in the process play an important role in cancer signalling pathways and are a good biomarker for oxidative stress...

INTRODUCTION: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex hormonal condition associated with psychological, reproductive, and metabolic features. Low-grade inflammation is a recognised factor causing metabolic and reproductive disorders in PCOS, which is why anti-inflammation approaches in PCOS treatment, especially during the COVID pandemic, are considered. A promising therapeutic option is osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), which activates the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway and can inhibit proinflammatory cytokines, such as TNF, IL-1β, and TNF-β...

Hysterectomy is a common surgical procedure performed to remove the uterus. This is considered as a clean-contaminated surgical procedure. It is a safe procedure, but major and minor complications can occur, including vault hematoma and vault cellulitis, which are specific to the surgical site. Vault hematoma is the accumulation of blood within the vaginal vault, while vault cellulitis is an infection of the vaginal vault or the surgical cuff following a hysterectomy. Vault hematoma may be caused by trauma during surgery, improper hemostasis or infection...

This case report follows a 66-year-old female who originally presented with malignant melanoma in the left knee and recurrence in the left inguinal region. This prompted a whole body FDG PET/CT scan which showed incidental focal hypermetabolism in the uterus. The diagnosis of endometrial cancer was confirmed at biopsy, and the patient was treated with total abdominal hysterectomy. Melanoma patients are at increased risk of second primary malignancy, and endometrial cancer is a common second primary often diagnosed in cancer survivors...

Preparations of black cohosh extract are sold as dietary supplements marketed to relieve the vasomotor symptoms of menopause, and some studies suggest it may protect against postmenopausal bone loss. Postmenopausal women are also frequently prescribed bisphosphonates, such as risedronate, to prevent osteoporotic bone loss. However, the pharmacodynamic interactions between these compounds when taken together is not known. To investigate possible interactions, 6-month-old, female Sprague-Dawley rats underwent bilateral ovariectomy or sham surgery and were treated for 24 weeks with either vehicle, ethinyl estradiol, risedronate, black cohosh extract or coadministration of risedronate and black cohosh extract, at low or high doses...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Breast cancer remains the most prevalent type of cancer among women worldwide, and it remains the primary cause of cancer-related deaths in this demographic. Neuroendocrine breast cancer (NBC), an uncommon subtype comprising less than 1% of cases, typically occurs in older women and displays as a slow-growing, low-grade condition. NBC exhibits distinct histological patterns and immunohistochemical markers. Given the limited data on NBC, assays are required that will provide information on molecular profiling and assist in clinical decision making...

OBJECTIVE: Ovarian removal prior to spontaneous/natural menopause (SM) is associated with increased risk of late life dementias including Alzheimer's disease. This increased risk may be related to the sudden and early loss of endogenous estradiol. Women with breast cancer gene mutations (BRCAm) are counseled to undergo oophorectomy prior to SM to significantly reduce their risk of developing breast, ovarian, and cervical cancers. There is limited evidence of the neurological effects of ovarian removal prior to the age of SM showing women without the BRCAm had cortical thinning in medial temporal lobe structures...
