The present report evaluates the effect of global perinatal asphyxia on several parameters of oxidative stress and cell viability in rat brain tissue sampled at an extended neonatal period up to 14 days, a period characterised by intensive neuritogenesis, synaptogenesis, synaptic consolidation, pruning and delayed cell death. Perinatal asphyxia was induced by immersing foetus-containing uterine horns removed by a caesarean section from on term rat dams into a water bath at 37 °C for 21 min. Asphyxia-exposed and sibling caesarean-delivered foetuses were manually resucitated and nurtured by surrogate dams for 1 to 14 postnatal (P) days...

Amiodarone is recommended by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation and has been adapted by the Resuscitation Council (UK) and the Advanced Life Support Group for use in paediatric advanced life support and advanced paediatric life support for the treatment of refractory supraventricular tachycardia. The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation has stated that resuscitation guidelines should be evidence based. We present a case report of a cardiovascularly stable infant with supraventricular tachycardia who had a variety of arrthymias requiring cardiopulmonary resucitation for a prolonged period of time after loading with intravenous amiodarone...

A 25-year-old woman with cerebral palsy of spastic quadriplegia and athetosis showed typical cardiac arrest encephalopathy on neuropathology. The etiology of cerebral palsy was perinatal origin including prematurity, asphyxia and hyperbilirubinemia. Ventricular premature beats had developed since about 20 years of age. Muscle tone also increased with aging and symptoms of vago-vagal reflex were occasionally observed after eating. At 25 years, cardiac arrest occurred and cardiopulmonary resucitation was done immediately...

Statistical analysis between a two year period with a five year interval (1972-1975) in a neonatal transitional care unit is evaluated. Number of resucitations doubled and neonatal mortality in the first seven days of life as well as in the first twenty four hours decreased significantly, being newborns under 1,000 gr. of weight and malformations the first two causes of death in both periods. Factors related to hypoxia which accounted for other 25% of deaths should be prevented. Importance of this type of units in huge maternities is emphasized considering their role in immediate neonatal care...
