INTRODUCTION: In this study, we investigate the evolution of lumbar fusion surgery with robotic assistance, specifically focusing on the impact of robotic technology on pedicle screw placement and fixation. Utilizing data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) covering 2016 to 2019, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of postoperative outcomes and costs for single-level lumbar fusion surgery. Traditionally, freehand techniques for pedicle screw placement posed risks, leading to the development of robotic-assisted techniques with advantages such as reduced misplacement, increased precision, smaller incisions, and decreased surgeon fatigue...

BACKGROUND: Inflammation is pathogenically implicated in pulmonary arterial hypertension; however, it has not been adequately targeted therapeutically. We investigated whether neuromodulation of an anti-inflammatory neuroimmune pathway involving the splenic nerve using noninvasive, focused ultrasound stimulation of the spleen (sFUS) can improve experimental pulmonary hypertension. METHODS: Pulmonary hypertension was induced in rats either by Sugen 5416 (20 mg/kg SQ) injection, followed by 21 (or 35) days of hypoxia (sugen/hypoxia model), or by monocrotaline (60 mg/kg IP) injection (monocrotaline model)...

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have established the impact of sex differences on pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). However, it remains unclear whether these sex differences extend to other hemodynamic subtypes of pulmonary hypertension (PH). METHODS: We examined sex differences in PH and hemodynamic PH subtypes in a hospital-based cohort of individuals who underwent right heart catheterization between 2005-2016. We utilized multivariable linear regression to assess the association of sex with hemodynamic indices of RV function [PA pulsatility index (PAPi), RV stroke work index (RVSWI), and right atrial: pulmonary capillary wedge pressure ratio (RA:PCWP)]...

We discuss a rare case of Stanford type A aortic dissection (TAAD) occurring several months after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) of the abdominal aortic and the common iliac artery (CIA) aneurysms. The patient underwent urgent surgery for TAAD treatment but died on the table due to intractable bleeding. We conclude that TAAD was likely unrelated to the initial EVAR procedure but rather to atherosclerosis, hypertension, and prior aortic valve replacement. Only a few cases in the literature report TAAD and total collapse of the abdominal aortic stent graft...

Comparative proteomic analysis of kidney tissue from normotensive (WKY) and spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) rats revealed quantitative and qualitative changes in renal proteins. The number of renal proteins specific for WKY rats (blood pressure 110-120 mm Hg) was 13-16. There were 20-24 renal proteins specific for SHR (blood pressure 180 mm Hg and more). The total number of identified renal proteins common for both rat strains included 972-975 proteins. A pairwise comparison of all possible (SHR-WKY) variants identified 8 proteins specific only for normotensive (WKY) animals, and 7 proteins specific only for hypertensive ones (SHR)...

Elevated intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+ ]i ) is a key trigger for pulmonary arterial smooth muscle cell (PASMC) proliferation and contributes greatly to pulmonary hypertension (PH). Extracellular Ca2+ influx via a store-operated Ca2+ channel (SOCC), termed store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE), is a crucial mechanism for [Ca2+ ] i elevation in PASMCs. Calcium release-activated calcium modulator (Orai) proteins, consisting of three members (Orai1-3), are the main components of SOCC. Sodium houttuyfonate (SH) is a product of the addition reaction of sodium bisulfite and houttuynin and has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and other properties...

BACKGROUND: While tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) captures the predominant longitudinal motion of the right ventricle (RV), it does not account for ventricular morphology and radial motion changes in various forms of pulmonary hypertension. This study aims to account for both longitudinal and radial motions by dividing TAPSE by RV area and to assess its clinical significance. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 71 subjects with New York Heart Association class II to III dyspnea who underwent echocardiogram and invasive cardiopulmonary exercise testing (which defined 4 hemodynamic groups: control, isolated postcapillary pulmonary hypertension, combined postcapillary pulmonary hypertension, and pulmonary arterial hypertension)...

Pulmonary hypertension (PH), a common complication in dogs affected by degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD), is a progressive disorder characterized by increased pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) and pulmonary vascular remodeling. Phosphorylation of proteins, impacting vascular function and cell proliferation, might play a role in the development and progression of PH. Unlike gene or protein studies, phosphoproteomic focuses on active proteins that function as end-target proteins within signaling cascades...
