AIM: Bariatric surgery is an effective tool for weight loss and for improving weight related co-morbidities. Changes in medication usage after a silastic ring laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (SR-LRYGB) compared with laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) are unknown. METHODS: This was a single-centre, double-blind, randomised controlled trial. Patients were randomised to either SR-LRYGB or LSG. A medication history was obtained at regular follow-up intervals, and mean numbers of prescribed medications were analysed over 5 years...

We aimed to study whether separating the vaginal and abdominal surgical fields during total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) is associated with surgical site infection rates. This was a retrospective cohort study of all patients who underwent TLH and any concomitant procedures with two minimally invasive gynecologic surgery subspecialists between January 2016 and May 2023. Among 680 included patients, the rate of infection was 0.8% with surgical field separation and 1.3% without (3/377 vs 4/303; odds ratio 0...

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to establish a screening model for differentiating anti-synthetase syndrome (ASS) from other antinuclear antibody (ANA)-associated rheumatic diseases (AARD) using a combination of cytoplasmic and non-cytoplasmic ANA (ncANA) patterns. METHODS: This retrospective observational study included patients with AARDs such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), systemic sclerosis (SSc), Sjögren's syndrome (SS), mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD), and polymyositis/dermatomyositis (PM/DM) who underwent ANA screening between April 2012 and December 2021...

Post-operative coronary artery spasm, a rare but potentially fatal complication following cardiac surgery, warrants significant attention. This report discusses a 64-year-old male who suffered a severe coronary artery spasm leading to cardiac arrest following surgery. Initially stable, the patient rapidly developed critical ventricular arrhythmias and hypotension, resulting in cardiac arrest four hours post-surgery. Emergency coronary angiography revealed extensive spasms, successfully managed with intracoronary nitroglycerin...

OBJECTIVES: Patients with failed stentless aortic prostheses are a challenging population to treat, as re-operative procedures may be complex and catheter based treatments are associated with a high rate of proecedural events. Re-operative surgery using sutureless valves may be an alternative. METHODS: In this multicentre experience we assess outcomes of 17 patients who underwent re-operative surgery using the Perceval valve (Corcym UK Limited, London, UK) insideFreestyle prosthesis (Medtronic Inc...

Bacterial predators are decisive organisms that shape microbial ecosystems. In this study, we investigated the role of iron and siderophores during the predatory interaction between two rhizosphere bacteria: Myxococcus xanthus, an epibiotic predator, and Sinorhizobium meliloti, a bacterium that establishes nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with legumes. The results show that iron enhances the motility of the predator and facilitates its predatory capability, and that intoxication by iron is not used by the predator to prey, although oxidative stress increases in both bacteria during predation...

An electrochemical oxidative difunctionalization of diazo compounds with diselenides and nucleophiles has been developed. This innovative approach yields a diverse array of selenium-containing pyrazole esters and alkoxy esters, overcoming the limitations of traditional synthesis methods. Remarkably, various nucleophiles, including acids, alcohols, and pyrazoles, can be seamlessly incorporated. Notably, this protocol boasts high atom efficiency, excellent functional group tolerance, and good efficiency and operates under transition metal- and oxidant-free conditions, distinguishing it in the field...

Bile leakage is a common complication following liver surgeries, particularly in the cases of liver hydatid cyst operations. Currently, there is no adequate method which could be utilized to prevent this complication effectively. Our study aimed to assess the efficacy of the biliary lipid test (BLT) in reducing biliary complications after hydatid cyst surgery. We retrospectively included patients who underwent open liver hydatid cyst surgery between January 2011 and January 2024. The study encompassed 122 patients, with 41 males and 81 females, ranging in age from 18 to 79 years...

Bone development, growth, and repair are complex processes involving various cell types and interactions, with central roles played by skeletal stem and progenitor cells. Recent research brought new insights into the skeletal precursor populations that mediate intramembranous and endochondral bone development. Later in life, many of the cellular and molecular mechanisms determining development are reactivated upon fracture, with powerful trauma-induced signaling cues triggering a variety of postnatal skeletal stem/progenitor cells (SSPCs) residing near the bone defect...

AIMS: Contact force (CF)-sensing radiofrequency (RF) catheters with an ablation index have shown reproducible outcomes for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF) in large multicentre studies. A dual-energy (DE) focal CF catheter to deliver RF and unipolar/biphasic pulsed field ablation (PFA), integrated with a three-dimensional (3D) mapping system, can provide operators with additional flexibility. Combinatorial optimization (CO) has a broad range of applications in various fields, including operations research, computer science, and artificial intelligence. However, many of these problems are classified as nondeterministic polynomial-time (NP)-complete or NP-hard problems, which are known for their computational complexity and cannot be solved in polynomial time on traditional digital computers. To address this challenge, continuous-time Ising machine solvers have been developed, utilizing different physical principles to map CO problems to ground state finding...

The organism was further engineered for higher cyanide tolerance and rhodanese yield using ethylmethanesulfonate as a mutagen. Mutagenesis resulted in an improved mutant with high cyanide tolerance (100 mM) and rhodanese yield (26.7 ± 0.67 U/mL). This yield was 4.34-fold higher than the wild strain (6.15 ± 0.65 U/mL). Layered oxides of sodium-ion batteries suffer from severe side reactions on the electrode/electrolyte interface, leading to fast capacity degradation. Although surface reconstruction strategies are widely used to solve the above issues, the utilization of the low-cost wet chemical method is extremely challenging for moisture-sensitive Na-based oxide materials. Here, the solvation tuning strategy is proposed to overcome the deterioration of NaNi1/3 Mn1/3 Fe1/3 O2 in water-based solution and conduct the surface reconstruction...

An engineered quantum platform would provide opportunities to operate FQH states without an external magnetic field and enhance local and coherent manipulation of these exotic states. The Chinese government, in tandem, leverages these international M&A operations to drive industrial transformation and progress in technology. This research investigates the role of China's industrial policies in shaping cross-border M&A activities by examining recent instances. Findings indicate that relaxing financial barriers and applying specific industrial tactics bolster companies' abilities to secure funding, consequently energizing cross-border M&A initiatives...

We demonstrate, starting from the logistic model structure, that classical, delayed, and fractional models are special cases of a framework using a gamma Mittag-Leffler memory kernel. We discuss and classify different types of this general kernel, analyze the asymptotic behavior of the general model, and provide numerical simulations...
