Gold standard method for the treatment of critical-sized bone defects is the autogenous bone grafting procedure. A number of new and potentially useful adjuncts currently are being investigated to enhance the success of bone grafting. We propose to evaluate the effect of the most known and easily obtained 2 biological materials, fat graft and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), on bone graft healing. Twenty-seven New Zealand male rabbits were included in this randomized, controlled study. Two-sided 15-mm diameter bone defects were created in the parietal bones and the bones taken were replaced right-to-left and vice versa with 1 control group, 1 fat graft applied group, and the last one PRP applied group...

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular fractures are common in maxillofacial trauma, often requiring surgical intervention for optimal recovery. One critical concern during such procedures is the potential for nerve damage, specifically involving the mandibular canal. This study aims to investigate whether the presence of postoperative mandibular canal discontinuity is associated with an increased risk of nerve damage. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of 72 postoperative mandibular fracture patients...

Closed treatment of mandibular condylar fractures has been used for its indications based on the fracture site, fracture status, and patient age. Posttreatment mandibular condyle size is associated with mandibular function; however, a few studies have reported bone remodeling patterns and volume changes in the condyle and glenoid fossa after mandibular condylar head fractures (CHFs). Therefore, volumetric changes in the mandibular condyle and glenoid fossa were analyzed in the present study, and bone remodeling patterns were evaluated after mandibular CHFs...

BACKGROUND: Microgenia and the accompanying plump cheeks or hamster-like facial contour are all unattractive appearances among the Asian. Genioplasty with autogenous bone grafting is one of the effective ways to improve microgenia, in which a suitable donor area with less additional damage, lower infection rate, and more excellent effect is crucial. METHODS: Patients who had undergone genioplasty and autogenous external oblique line grafting (G-EOL) were followed up...

Vascularization and inflammation management are essential for successful bone regeneration during the healing process of large bone defects assisted by artificial implants/fillers. Therefore, this study is devoted to the optimization of the osteogenic microenvironment for accelerated bone healing through rapid neovascularization and appropriate inflammation inhibition that were achieved by applying a tantalum oxide (TaO)-based nanoplatform carrying functional substances at the bone defect. Specifically, TaO mesoporous nanospheres were first constructed and then modified by functionalized metal ions (Mg2+ ) with the following deferoxamine (DFO) loading to obtain the final product simplified as DFO-Mg-TaO...

This case report presents the clinical details of a 60-year-old woman who experienced a secondary infection 5 years postimplant placement and loading in a region affected by cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD). We conducted the simultaneous removal of the implant and the COD mass, which had become osseointegrated with the implant. Healing of the affected area was successful. Caution is paramount during implant placement in COD-affected areas, particularly during the intermediate and osteosclerotic stages, due to compromised vascularity...

BACKGROUND: Teeth and supporting oral tissues are attractive and accessible sources of stem cells. Periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSC) are readily isolated from extracted third molars, and exhibit the ability to self-renew and differentiate into multiple mesodermal cell fates. Clinical experience suggests that the exact location of periodontal defects affects the oral bone remodeling and wound healing. Compared to the mandible, the maxilla heals quicker and more efficiently. Angiogenesis is key in tissue regeneration including dental tissues, yet few studies focus on the angiogenic potential of PDLSC, none of which considered the differences between upper and lower jaw PDLSC (u-PDLSC and l-PDLSC, respectively)...

Clavicle fractures are a common injury in adults. Most patients are treated non-operatively. In this case report, a 53-year-old professional violinist had a midt shaft clavicula fracture and was treated non-operatively. The fracture healed, but the patient developed thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) and a venous thrombosis when playing violin. Surgery with restoration of the normal anatomy alleviated the symptoms and six months later she was symptom free and playing violin again. TOS is a rare complication to clavicle fractures and the treating doctors should be aware of the diagnosis...

This case report describes a case of intention replantation in a 15-year-old patient with a mandibular permanent right second molar that had undergone root canal treatment previously. The tooth was tender on percussion. Radiographic evaluation showed the presence of a separated instrument and periapical radiolucency. The surgical procedure was performed under local anesthesia, and the tooth was extracted. Periodontitis is known to be affected by high-glucose conditions, which poses a challenge to periodontal tissue regeneration, particularly in bone formation. In this study, the potential effects of resveratrol (3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene, RSV) in facilitating bone formation under high-glucose conditions after periodontitis has been investigated. We focused on the analysis of osteoblasts and periodontal ligament cells, which are essential for bone formation including cell proliferation and differentiation. And we aimed to investigate the impact of RSV on bone healing, employed diabetic mouse model induced by streptozotocin and confirmed through histological observation...

It is characterized by delayed fracture healing, high risk of re-fracture, high rate of disability and death, difficulty in treatment and long treatment time, and re-fracture has a"cascade effect". Guidelines in different countries recommend that patients with osteoporotic fractures and those at very high risk of fracture should consider anabolic agents as first treatment choice...

The regenerative treatment of infectious vertical bone defects remains difficult and challenging today. Current clinical treatments are limited in their ability to control bacteria and infection, which is unfavorable for new bone formation and calls for a new type of material with excellent osteogenic and antibacterial properties. Here a multifunctional scaffold is synthesized that mimics natural bone nanostructures by incorporating silver nanowires into a hierarchical, intrafibrillar mineralized collagen matrix (IMC/AgNWs), to achieve the therapeutic goals of inhibiting bacterial activity and promoting infectious alveolar bone augmentation in rats and beagle dogs...
