INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) in children under 15 years often results in airway compression, with bronchus intermedius (BI) being the most common site. Endoscopic enucleations can be used to remove lymph nodes and establish an airway in severe cases. Both rigid and flexible bronchoscopy are suitable, with alligator forceps being preferred for its ability to extract tissue. Recent studies have also explored cryoprobe enucleation. CASE PRESENTATION: An HIV-positive boy with persistent symptoms after 9 months of TB treatment was diagnosed based on his mother's and sister's Xpert MTB/RIF positive status...

The tracheal Y-shaped stent is mainly used for the treatment of critical patients with airway stenosis or esophagotracheal fistula near carina. A novel method for precise implantation of Y-shaped tracheal stents was developed using double-lumen endotracheal intubation and flexible bronchoscopy. This approach aims to address the limitations associated with X-ray or rigid bronchoscopy guidance, such as operational difficulties and the risk of inaccurate stent placement leading to implantation failure or suffocation...

We present a case of an adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) located in the upper trachea, which resulted in significant airway blockage, that was unsuitable for surgical removal due to concerns about functional impairment. Instead, endotracheal enucleation via rigid bronchoscopy was performed initially, followed by the injection of a novel tumor ablation agent known as para-toluenesulfonamide (PTS). We detail the dosing regimen, effectiveness evaluation, and post-treatment follow-up. The study highlights the potential of PTS injection as a viable alternative treatment option for patients with ACC who cannot undergo surgical resection and feasibility of lipiodol to monitor treatment effect...

A series of studies on the interventional diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis(TB)were carried out by domestic and foreign researchers in 2023. The combination of minimally invasive interventional procedures with endoscopes, guidance, material acquisition techniques by multiple ways and multichannel and highly accurate laboratory testing techniques is becoming more and more widely practiced clinically, which has played an important role in the accurate diagnosis of problematic TB. Diagnostic procedures for pulmonary TB, tracheobronchial TB, mediastinal lymphatic TB and extrapulmonary TB included conventional flexible bronchoscopy and specific types of bronchoscopy(ultrathin bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound), transbronchial needle aspiration biopsy, endobronchial ultrasound and virtual bronchoscopic navigation system-guided forceps biopsy, thoracoscopic cryobiopsy of pleura, percutaneous biopsy, and so on...

Foreign body aspirations and esophageal foreign bodies are lifethreatening conditions. Sometimes they or their complications can cause severe morbidity and even mortality. Their exact incidence is unknown. Foreign body aspirations and esophageal foreign bodies are most commonly observed in the pediatric age group. While interventions are generally required for the removal of respiratory tract foreign bodies, the majority of esophageal foreign bodies come out spontaneously. Removal of foreign bodies that block the lumen of the organ to a great extent, react with the mucosa such as battery magnets, and can cause poisoning, sharp-edged objects, and swellable foreign bodies such as legumes, should be done acutely...

Hemoptysis represents a symptom or sign that typically causes anxiety for patients and draws the attention of the physician because it can be caused by various conditions, ranging from benign to malignant. Depending on the amount of coughed-up blood, hemoptysis can be a life-threatening condition. We present the case of a female patient with a life-threatening hemoptysis that was caused by underlying bronchiectasis and antiplatelet and anticoagulant treatments. A large blood clot was extracted from the patient's airways using a rigid bronchoscope...

We present three novel cases of tracheobronchial foreign bodies (TFBs) in children caused by pen caps. One was removed by the rigid bronchoscopy successfully, the second was removed by rigid bronchoscopy combined with tracheotomy, and the last one was treated by bronchotomy from an external thoracic approach. Rigid bronchoscopy is the most widely used for treating TFBs in clinics, especially treating large and special foreign bodies, because rigid bronchoscopy can provide a good view for observation and operation...

This clinical case shows the repercussions of acute exposure to cement dust in the respiratory tract and other mucous membranes. Following a cement dust pipe explosion, the patient endured a severe inhalation of dust. A combination of rigid bronchoscopy and a mechanical insufflation-exsufflation system was employed to remove cement debris from the airways. Respiratory physiotherapy sessions were implemented for effective secretion clearance, contributing to a successful short-term recovery. While this remains an isolated case, the unconventional techniques employed provide valuable insights for potential similar scenarios in the future...

Central airway tumors presenting as critical airway stenosis is a medical emergency. Employing a cryoprobe, we successfully debulked a central airway tumor, providing rapid relief to a patient who came to the emergency room with severe breathlessness, hemoptysis, and respiratory failure. The current report underscores the efficacy of cryodebulking as an immediate and minimally invasive technique and a compelling alternative to conventional heat-based therapies.

As computer vision algorithms increase in capability, their applications in clinical systems will become more pervasive. These applications include: diagnostics, such as colonoscopy and bronchoscopy; guiding biopsies, minimally invasive interventions, and surgery; automating instrument motion; and providing image guidance using pre-operative scans. Many of these applications depend on the specific visual nature of medical scenes and require designing algorithms to perform in this environment. In this review, we provide an update to the field of camera-based tracking and scene mapping in surgery and diagnostics in medical computer vision...

BACKGROUND: Foreign Body Aspiration (FBA) is one of the paediatric emergencies which require timely diagnosis and management. The inherent tendency of children to explore small objects with their mouths often prove to be fatal as they are difficult to remove once aspirated. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 5-year-old boy who presented with dyspnea and vomiting following the aspiration of a pen cap. Chest radiograph and Rigid Bronchoscopy helped to identify the foreign body but it couldn't be removed by Rigid Bronchoscopy alone due it's wedge-shaped nature...

Accidental Foreign body aspiration, especially sharp metallic objects may lead to life threatening complications. A metallic object is identified readily on a Xray chest or CT chest and helps us in ascertaining its location. A straight pin with blunt head in the shape of pearl is used in wearing a head scarf also known as hijab to hold it in place. The head scarf pin (hijab pin) if accidentally aspirated into the airway may lead to grave complications. Hence timely intervention with suitable instrumentation is essential to prevent any lethal complications...

Foreign body aspiration (FBA) in adults is indeed a significant medical concern, albeit less common than in children. The increase in incidence with advancing age can be attributed to factors such as a decline in mental status and impairment of the swallowing reflex, which is more prevalent in the elderly population. The symptoms of FBA are highly variable, ranging from severe, acute asphyxiation, which may or may not involve complete airway obstruction, to more subtle signs like coughing, shortness of breath (dyspnea), choking, or fever...
